Question:

Hi Folks Have had a couple of failed wiring convertors on my 2013 Camry Hybrid. Curt C55567 Hopkins 48915 I need a recommendation for a powered unit that will not fail on the Hybrid. Note: One of the failures could have been caused by crappy LED tail lights.

I recommend changing to the Tekonsha T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness # 118405 on your 2013 Toyota Camry Hybrid. In my experience the Tekonsha harness has proven to be a more reputable convertor for vehicles. In speaking to one of our technicians who installs these devices on a regular basis, the most important part of the installation is securing the wiring and converter so that the wires do not pull out of the converter box. Tekonsha understands this by giving you a mounting hole in the converter that will allow you to secure it in your trunk. I have linked a video below that shows the installation process for the converter and harness. You can use the screw that comes with the kit to help secure the converter in place as you can attach the included ground wire to the ground wires already in the trunk compartment.

Since you mentioned that one of the failures may have been caused by faulty LED taillights it may be a good idea to test your trailer wiring to ensure that you do not have any shorts in the system. I have also linked a quite in-depth article below that covers troubleshooting trailer wiring issues. I recommend focusing the attention on possible wiring shorts and bad ground connections. You will want to follow the wiring looking for any signs that the wire was crushed or is fraying that would cause an electrical short. These portions of the wiring will need repaired or replaced depending on the extent of the damage. For the ground connections you should check where every light grounds to the frame or runs to the main plug if your trailer is not grounded. The connections should be clean and free of corrosion. Surface rust/corrosion may cause the ground wire to not make a positive connection.
