Can Dutton-Lainson Roller Bunk be Attached Directly to Carpeted Bunks on a Boat Trailer

Question:

HI. I have 11 foot long bunks on my trailer. They measure 3 inches wide and 5.5 inchs deep not counting the carpet. Can I use 2 sets of the 5 foot long roller bunks and mount then straight to my wooden bunks with lag screws? The boat is a 24 foot seaarc aluminum boat. The total weight is approx 2000 lbs. I have used the slyde pads a few times but the weight in the back of the boat keeps cracking the pads. Will the bunks hold the weight since the majority of the weight is tward the motor? Also will the rollers hold up in salt water? I was told they get stiff and wont roll after some use. Thank you

Expert Reply:

For an 11 foot long bunks, using 2 sets of the Dutton-Lainson roller bunks, # DL21741, would work well. The capacity for a set is 3,000 pounds so a 2,000 pound boat should not be an issue. You can use your own hardware to secure the rollers to your existing bunk. There are holes in the base of the roller frame to do so.

Please note that adding the rollers will raise the height of the boat some (2-3/4 inches or so) but you may need to reposition other rollers an items on the trailer to accommodate the new height.

The rollers should hold up just fine. We have not had complaints about the rollers becoming stiff or failing to work after repeated use. They were designed for marine applications so they should wrok well for you.
