Correct Ball Mount Recommendation to Tow Malone EcoLight Trailer with PT Cruiser and Curt Hitch
Question:
Hi there. I just ordered the Malone Eco-light Kayak Trailer. Excited to get it and assemble. Thanks for the assembly video and excellent assembly manual available on your site. My questions are related to the PT Cruiser end of this equation: 1. I am planning on getting your Curt Trailer Hitch Assemble Item # C11132. When looking at the needed 1 1/4inch Draw Bar - like your C5520 - they all call out a rise dimension. How do I determine the correct rise between my PT Cruiser and the Malone Eco-Light Kayak Trailer? 2. The trailer comes with a wiring kit. Do I also need a wiring lit for the car - like your Curt T Connector Wiring Kit - C55532? 3. Does the Malone trailer come with all the documentation I will need to get it registered, tagged and licensed in Colorado? Thanks so much.

You asked a great question about picking out the correct rise/drop ball mount for towing the Malone EcoLight Trailer part # MAL53FR. Basically you want to go with the ball mount that has the correct rise/drop to allow the trailer to sit as level as possible. So when the Curt hitch part # C11132 is installed on your 2010 Chrysler PT Cruiser it's going to have a distance of 11-1/4 inches from the top of the hitch opening down to the ground and the Malone trailer has a distance of 15 inches from the ground to the bottom lip of the coupler. This means you'd need a rise of 3-3/4 inches. HOWEVER with Class I hitches like the Curt (lower capacity vehicles) you have to use only the recommended ball mount from the manufacturer.
In your case you get pretty lucky as the recommended/required ball mount is the part # C45520 which has a rise of 3-1/8 inches which is close enough to work well. The size ball you need is 2 inch so you'd need the part # C40018 and you'd be set in that regard.
Now trailer wiring is sold separately and you will need that. For that the best kit is the Curt kit part # C55532 as it installs without requiring splicing and gives you the most reliable converter box we offer.
The Malone trailer also comes with everything you'll need to register it and get it on the road!
