Towing Package for 2018 Mazda CX-5

Question:

We got our 2018 CX-5 this past summer but we did not get the towing options. We now have a small utility trailer for yard tasks and we will need a hitch and related parts. Will we need wiring too?

We can help you with setting up your CX-5 for towing your utility trailer. I checked the CX-5 specs in the online owner's manual and for a small utility trailer, loaded with a cubic yard or two of mulch for example, you'll be fine.

The basic items you'll need are the hitch, a ball mount and hitch ball and a wiring harness if the trailer has built-in lights. If the trailer does not have lights you do not need wiring. You might also want some towing mirrors though.

Your CX-5 can be fitted with either of two hitch sizes, either a 1-1/4-inch Class II such as Curt # C12170 or a 2-inch Class III type like Curt # C13315. I recommend this 2-inch Curt hitch because it is has higher capacities at about the same price and because this hitch size offers broader compatibility with other items like bike racks and cargo carriers that you might also want to use in the future. The Curt hitch # C13315 bolts on with its included hardware kit and provides a clean appearance on the car as shown in the linked photo of a completed installation.

For a ball mount you can use # C45230 along with either 1-7/8-inch hitch ball # C40051 or 2-inch ball # 40038. Pick the one that matches your trailer's coupler; it should have a marking (a label or a stamping into the metal) to tell you the ball size it is intended for. Most likely on a small utility trailer this will be a 1-7/8-inch coupler.

If the trailer does have lights you will need 4-pole wiring harness kit # 118746. This installs via plugging in connectors at the CX-5's taillights and running one wire up to the battery. An article is linked to help you with the install. I recommend using dielectric grease # 11755 on the harness plugs at time of installation to protect those connections from corrosion.

For some low-cost towing mirrors I suggest the K-Source universal-fit mirror set # KS3990 which simply clips on to your factory mirrors to give you a wider field of view behind you so you can see the trailer and the vehicles behind it.
