Recommended Cargo Carrier with Ramp to Clear Spare Tire on Jeep Wrangler

Question:

I am searching for a Hitch Style Cargo Carrier w/ a Ramp. I would prefer Aluminum but would buy a Steel if proper fit. Need to use it on a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited w/ spare tire on back. Looking at Flint Hill Goods . Item # FHG77ZR. There is a customer that has a photo posted of this device and he stated in the comment “used longer shaft length”. Can you explain this, would this permit the carrier to fold up and basically cover the spare tire ? I really would like it to fold up instead of sticking out the back. Appreciate any help. Thanks.

The Flint Hill Goods Cargo Carrier # C18112 is a really nice, aluminum carrier that is compatible with 2 inch trailer hitch receivers.

When determining if a particular carrier or accessory will clear the spare tire on your Jeep, you will first want to take a quick measurement. Measure the distance from the center of the hitch pin hole on your trailer hitch receiver, to the outermost edge of the spare tire. The Flint Hill Goods Carrier features a distance from the center of the hitch pin hole to the closest edge of the carrier of 8-1/2 inches, and this carrier does not fold.

In order to fold this carrier up without hitting the spare tire, you will need to add a hitch extender, which is what the customer you mentioned was referring to. Hitch extenders are available in various lengths, and I have attached a link that will take you directly to our available selection that you can look through. For example, the Brophy Hitch Extender with Step # ST18 measures 18 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole on the trailer hitch to the center of the hitch pin hole on the extender.

An important thing to note when using any kind of hitch adapter is that, in general, they will reduce the tongue weight capacity of the hitch by 33-1/3 -50 percent. A nice thing about the mentioned Brophy extender in particular is that it will only reduce the hitch's capacity by one third (33-1/3%). This means that if the trailer hitch on your Jeep features a 350 pound tongue weight capacity, this will be reduced to 233 pounds. You will need to make sure that the combined weight of the carrier itself (77 pounds) and your cargo do not exceed this reduced limit.

We do not currently have an aluminum carrier with ramp that can be folded up when not in use. We have a similar steel carrier that is 30X50 inches, has a 48" ramp and folds when not in use. This Flint Hill Goods carrier # FHG77ZR sits 14 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole when down, and only 4-3/4" when folded up. I have attached a couple short video demonstrations on the products mentioned that you can take a look at.
