Parts Needed to Install Electric Trailer Brakes on a Pop-Up Camper
Question:
Hi, Id like to install brakes on this pop-up camper. It did not come with brakes but it was an option and it already has the 4 hole flange on the axle. It currently has 20.5x8x10 tires and each wheel has 5 holes. Am I correct in thinking that all I need is the following: 8-257-5UC3-EZ 2 drums 23-48 1 brake 23-47 1 brake Will I need anything else to add the brakes? Do I need grease, etc.? Im also thinking on replacing the tires since it still has the original tires, will this be the correct part? The existing tires say Load B. AM3H350 2 tires + wheels.

You have compatible hub and brake assemblies selected. The brake assemblies, # 23-48 right hand, and # 23-47 left hand, will mount to a 4 bolt flange that has bolt holes 2-7/8 inches apart on center. You will need to make sure your existing bearings and seal match the bearings and seal in the hub and drum you selected, # 8-257-5UC3-EZ, and that the wheel bolt pattern, 5 on 4-1/2 inches, matches also. The trailer hub and drum # 8-257-5UC3-EZ is designed for use on an EZ lube axle with grease fitting in the end of the spindle, if your axle does not have the grease fitting, the # 8-257-5UC3 hub and drum will come with a solid grease cap instead of one with a rubber insert.
To mount the brake assemblies to the mounting flanges you will need 8 nuts, # 6-17, and 8 washers, # 5-8.
For installation of the hubs you will need wheel bearing grease. The LubriMatic brake and wheel bearing great # L11380 is a good choice for trailers that are not immersed in water.
The Kenda 205/65-10 trailer tire and wheel, item # AM3H350, that you selected will work with the hub and brake assemblies you have chosen, and would be the correct combination if your existing tires are the 205/65-10 size.
You will also need wiring for the electric brake magnets, and a trailer connector for connection of the trailer to your tow vehicle. You will need a brake controller and proper wiring in your tow vehicle also.
For trailer wiring I would recommend an appropriate length of 10 gauge double bonded wire, item # 10-2-1, to go from the trailer connector back to the trailer brake on one side and then across to the other side. You will most likely want to go with a 7-Way RV trailer side connector, item # PK12706.
For your vehicle you can install an electric brake controller with the Electric Brake Controller Installation Kit, # ETBC7, see instructions link, or if your vehicle is set up with a towing package, you may be able to use a vehicle specific brake controller wiring harness. I would need the year make and model of your vehicle to make a recommendation for wiring.
For a brake controller the Prodigy P2 # 90885 would be a great choice. This is one of our best selling controllers and it is very reliable.
We have a video that shows how to install trailer brakes on a trailer that did not come with brakes installed for you to review, see link.
