How to Install the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver on a 2013 BMW 128i

Just purchased and installed a hitch on my SRX from you folks......everything came together as the info supplied, including the video, said. Now Im on to a trailer hitch for a 2013 BMW 128i. Ive been swamped reading reviews and instructions BUT havent seen a video. Im more of a monkey see monkey do type of guy, do you folks have a DIY video hidden away some where?

The only hitch receiver we have confirmed to fit your 2013 BMW 128i is the Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver part # C11184. Unfortunately, we have not had a chance to install this hitch on a 2013 BMW 128i yet. However, the installation process is fairly straightforward and I will do my best to walk you through the process below.

Before you get started you will need a few tools for installation: 8, 10, and 19mm sockets, 12" extensions, Ratchet, 19mm wrench, Flat Head Screwdriver, Rotary Tool with Cut-Off Wheel, and a Torque Wrench.

Once the necessary tools are acquired you can now begin the installation. I have also attached an online set of instructions with photos to help walk you through the process.

1) Remove the (2) underbody panels at the rear of the vehicle.

2) Lower the exhaust by removing the 10mm bolt from the hanger bracket at the rear most mounting point.

3) Remove the rear bumper fascia by using a screwdriver to release the (8) bumper fascia tabs. Remove the (4) screws securing it using an 8mm socket.

4) Raise the hitch into position over the (4) bumper beam mount studs between the trunk panel and the bumper beam, as shown. Secure the hitch using a 12mm hex nut and a 1/2" lock washer on each stud.

5) Torque all 12mm hardware to 82 lb ft.

6) Trim the underbody panel to clear hitch as shown in underbody panel trimming.

7) Raise the exhaust back into position and install the 10mm exhaust hanger bolt. Reinstall the rear bumper fascia and the (2) underbody panels.

8) Pat yourself on the back because you are done and the hitch is installed.

If you plan to be towing a trailer, you will want a wiring harness like part # 119250KIT and a drawbar like part # C45571 with a 1-7/8" hitch ball or part # C45572 with a 2" hitch ball. If you do not plan to be using the hitch receiver for towing, Curt recommends the use of the Curt Trailer Hitch Support Strap part # 18050. To prevent dirt and water from getting inside the hitch receiver tube opening, I recommend using the Rubber Hitch Cover part # 22281.

I have attached a review video of the support strap in addition to a photo of what the hitch will look like installed on the back of your vehicle for you as well.
