Video Transcript for Bulldog A-Frame Trailer Coupler - Standard Coupler - BD028463 Review

Today were going to take a quick look at the Bulldog collar lock Coupler with high profile latch part number bd028463. Bulldog covers this coupler with limited five year warranty. It has a 12,500 pound gross trailer weight capacity. Its designed to work with 50 degree A-frame trailers. It has the standard cut and bolt pattern cut to mount a trailer jack. Now well show you how this jack operates.

It comes included with a pin that fits through the latch mechanism to prevent it from being opened. You can replace this pin with a coupler lock, sold separately, that will also secure the latch and prevent it from coming open while trailering down the road but itll also help protect against theft when you have your trailer stored. As for the mechanism well lift the handle, this collar slides back so that the spring loaded hinge jaw can open up and release the ball. Well lift our latch, the collar moves back and the jaw pops out. Well hold the jaw in and close the collar over it.

Now weve got with us a two and five sixteenth ball so well show you how it works with an actual ball. Pull our latch open. The hinge jaw pops open and it provides a little stop here for the collar to rest so you dont have to worry about it closing when youre hooking or unhooking your trailer. Weve got a two and five sixteenth ball that well fit into the socket. We can then close our jaw and let the collar close over it.

Now our ball is completely captive but it allows enough movement for it to track nicely behind eh vehicle. Well pull open our jaw and our balls free. Thats it for a quick look at the Bulldog collar lock Coupler with high profile latch for two and five sixteenth balls part number bd028463.

Looks very nice and sturdy.

I've used these types of couplers before on my other trailers and love them! Simple operation and gives me a very secure feeling this will never come off my ball hitch. This coupler is to replace my old hard-to-operate other style coupler on my flat bed car hauler. Would've given 5 stars if it weren't that I had to work the spring loaded latch back and forth many many times and with lubrication to finally become semi-free in operation.

Spring loaded clam shell still stiff in opening completely. Other than that, factory welds are showing no signs of stress or cracks. Original star rating remains the same.

Easiest hook up there is.The first time I bought one of these connectors I was in Texas. They are easy to find out there. Well I have a problem with my tow vehicle. It has a spare tire hanging right on top of my receiver ball. The connector that came with the trailer required about 6+" of space between the ball and the tire, which I did not have, I could lengthen the ball out which I definately wanted to avoid. This connector was the answer to my situation. I went up north last weekend to visit my son and when I got back this connector was setting on my front porch, this was about 4:30 PM. Before I went to bed it was installed on my trailer, after I cut the existing one off ofcourse. This connector connects up like a dream, it's self centering, has no adjustments, so you do not have to worry if it is too tight or too loose and may come apart. I modified the toung on my last trailer also and used this same connector, it's neat, sweet and compleat. I may be in the market for a load leveler kit.

by:

Very heavy duty and well made. Fits over ball and closes easily. Will never worry about trailer coming loose again.

Five star service from etrailer, and maybe a two or three-star product from Bulldog. Aside from the rust and the fact that the collar is so stiff that it can't be operated by hand, the fabrication on the steel attachment plate is poor. The holes for the tongue jack are punched out, twice in some cases, resulting in an enlarged hole, but there are no threads for the tongue jack so you'll have to fumble around and use nuts underneath. The vertical angles on the steel are wrong, so it will splay out at the bottom and won't fit tightly to the A-frame and you will need to shim it out. The interior of the casting is full of weld spatter that will chafe the tow ball. I bought the less-expensive Ram sleeve-lock coupler under a Curt label and the fabrication is much better, having none of the problems the BullDog did. etrailer kindly sent me an RMA to return the BullDog.

The best coupler we have used for our construction business. I have been using these for 14 years now without any problems. We replace them every 5 years at about 160,000 miles when we purchase new trailers. I currently need three now but they have been out of stock for several months. Still waiting for new stock to arrive so I can order. I feel safe with this type coupler and my employees also like the security it provides.

by:

Don’t buy this!!! It literally does not work. You can’t open the coupling because it was built incorrectly. There isn’t enough room to slide the coupling back. Of course I didn’t realize this until I had mounted it on my trailer. etrailer customer service is about to get an earful!

  • Recommended A-Frame Coupler for Flatbed/Car Hauler Trailer
The Yoke style or Collar-Lok style couples are definitely the best to use when it comes to loading heavy weight in a trailer, like a car. I recommend looking into the weight of your trailer and the vehicle you plan on hauling before deciding on a coupler. The A-Frame Trailer Coupler # CA-5210-B is a great option that is rated for up to 8,000 lbs but if you are needing something rated even higher than that the Bulldog Collar-Lok # BD028463 or # BD028499 is the better route to go as they...

  • Will Replacement Coupler Cap Spring # BD500354 Work on 2-5/16" Ball Coupler
The Replacement Coupler Cap Spring # BD500354 is specific to certain model Bulldog Collar-Lok Couplers, however it can indeed be used on a 2-5/16" ball coupler as it's a confirmed fit for the Bulldog Collar-Lok # BD028463. If this is what you have the spring will work perfectly as a replacement. If you have a different model coupler just let me know and I will be happy to see if we have a better solution available.

  • Will Bulldog A-Frame Jack Fit Bulldog Collar-Lok A-Frame Coupler
Yes, the Bulldog jack # BD155033 is an exact fit for the # BD028463 Bulldog coupler. Both the jack and the coupler's hole are 2-1/4 inches. Most A-frame jacks are a universal fit.

  • Is a Bulldog Collar Harder to Latch Than a Wedge A-Frame Trailer Coupler
In regards to the Bulldog Collar-Lok Coupler w/ High-Profile Latch part # BD028463, you will indeed need to be more centered over the hitch ball in order to couple in comparison to the Bulldog Heavy-Duty Cast Head Coupler w/ Wedge Latch part # BD44125W0317 which will more or less center itself with enough pressure. For that reason, I do prefer the trigger/wedge style.

For the Bulldog Collar-Lok Coupler w/ High-Profile Latch # BD028463 we have the Latch Repair Kit # BD024200 that is specific to the coupler. For a Jack there are several options based on how much weight you are needing to lift and also if you are wanting manual or electric. I recommend the Lippert Smart Jack Electric Trailer Jack # LC643589 if you are wanting an electric jack. This jack is rated for a lift capacity of 3,500lbs and has programable memory, so that you will be able to set...

  • Coupler Lock for Bulldog Collar-Lok Coupler
Hi. You would not have needed to make a hole in the Bulldog Collar-Lok Coupler # BD028463 to lock it, you would only need to use Trailer Coupler Lock # e98888. This lock would go through the latch where the pin is to secure your coupler.

  • Wide A-Frame Coupler Recommendation for a Trailer
I did some checking and the a-frame coupler with the most distance at the widest point is the Bulldog Collar-Lok coupler part # BD028384. This coupler has a 11 inches at the widest point. Is there a reason you need one that wide? All that really matters is the angle of the coupler as it matches your frame. Nearly all A-frame trailer have a 50 degree angle where the coupler installs. The # BD028463 would install on a 50 degree angled A-frame trailer.

Thank you for sending the photo! While I have a solution for you, the Blaylock Total-Encasement Coupler Lock, part # BLTL-23 will not work. I is designed to fit Bulldog Collar-Lok style couplers that use a 2-5/16" ball, like # BD028463 for example. For a lipped coupler, like yours, Blaylock does offer the EZ Lock Trailer Coupler Lock for 2-5/16" Lipped Couplers - Aluminum - Push Button # BLTL-34. • What is Difference Between High and Low Profile Bulldog Couplers
The difference between the low profile latch Bulldog coupler part # BD028499 and the high profile coupler part # BD028463 is the height of the latch and it's design that pulls the collar back. It's really personal preference between the two. Whichever you would want to use would be the way to go. Only real thing to consider would be clearance. If for some reason you didn't have the clearance for the high profile you would need to go with the low profile. I attached review videos for these...

  • Bolt-on Trailer Coupler to Replace Bulldog # BD028463
You could drill into the Bulldog # BD028463 and make it a bolt-on but that's not really ideal. We don't have the exact match in a bolt-on model. We do have part # BD44150WH301 for a bolt-on Bulldog coupler. It has a higher rating but the price tag is quite a bit more. Another option is a Demco coupler. Part # DM16680-52 has even more weight capacity and a nice latch. It fits the same ball size and bolt pattern as well.

  • Location of VIN on Hammerblow Car Hauler Trailer
A trailer's 17-digit VIN will usually be located near the tongue area on an inside-facing surface where the information will be protected from impacts from road debris.
