Recommended Items Needed For 2013 Toyota Sienna Towing A 3000-Lb Camper With Brakes

Question:

I just purchased a 2013 Toyota Sienna XLT. Im planning next to buy a small pop up camper which I expect to weigh about 3,000 lbs. What would be the recommended part numbers for everything I would need to install a tow package, wiring including electric brakes.?

The first thing you will need is a trailer hitch on your Sienna. I recommend the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch, part # 36513. This is a Class lll hitch and it has a 2 inch receiver opening.

Since you are towing I recommend a ball mount kit like part # 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts; one with a 3/4 inch rise or 2 inch drop and one with a 2-3/4 inch rise or 4 inch drop. It also includes a 1-7/8 inch ball, 2 inch ball, hitch pin with clip, and a storage bag.

If the ball mount kit does not include a ball mount with the right rise or drop to tow the trailer level, check out the link I have included that explains how to measure to choose a ball mount to tow the trailer level.

For trailer wiring I recommend part # 118498. This plugs into the Sienna connection points behind the tail lights. You then run a hot lead wire to the positive battery post with the included inline fuse.

The brake controller I recommend is the P2, part # 90885. This is our most popular brake controller because it is easy to install and operate. To complete the brake controller installation you will need part # ETBC7. This plugs into the 4-way at the back of the vehicle and with additional wiring shown in the attached drawing will give you a 7-way trailer connector at the back of your Sienna.

When working with electrical connectors I recommend using dielectric grease like part # 11755. This keeps dirt and moisture out of the electrical connections and helps prevent corrosion.

Per the owner's manual, any trailer that weighs over 2000-lbs requires a sway control system. I recommend the Reese Sway Control Kit, part # 83660. To install this kit you will also need a sway-control bracket like part # RP26003.
