Recommended Disc Brakes for a Magic Boat Trailer with 3,500 Pound Tandem Axles

Question:

I have a Magic Boat Trailer. Serial # 1M5AUVX29M1031260. This trailer does not have a brake system on it and it should have. 3500 tandem axles, 15 inch tires. Both axles have flanges to bolt on flange to hold calipers. I want disc brakes. I am looking at a Titan Kit # T4843400. But I do not see the flanges the caliper bolt to. There is a 5000 lb. Bayliner Ceira 2550 on the trailer. Will this work and are they included in the kit.

Adding a disc brake system will be a great addition to your Magic boat trailer. The parts you will need are a brake mounting flange, spindle, disc brake assembly, hydraulic disc brake actuator and brake line kit.

I recommend the Kodiak disc brake kit # K2R35DKG because it has rust resistant disc brakes and is great for boat trailers. The cast iron, slip on over the hub rotors are great because you won't need to replace your entire hub assembly. Note, as long as your bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2 this will work great.

For your brake line kit, I would go with the Demco kit for tandem axle trailers # DM5425 and the brake actuator I recommend is the Dexter Actuator part # 099-175-20. The capacity is 7,500 pounds and will be a better choice since you have a 5,000 Bayliner plus your Magic boat trailer. The kit # T4843400 you referenced has a capacity of 7,500 pounds and may not be sufficient enough.

Mounting flanges won't be included in brake kits but the mounting brackets for this kit is designed to fit a 4 bolt brake flange. Just in case you don't have the mounting flanges, I would go with brake mounting flange # 4-35 and have them welded by a professional welder as it requires precision accuracy. Since you have a flange on your spindles, see the picture I included and if looks like that, then you probably won't need flanges.

Please keep in mind that your trailer axle capacity is 7,000 pounds, since you have 2 axles with 3,500 pound capacity. You trailer capacity also includes the weight of the trailer, not just the cargo. You will want to make sure that you are not overloading the trailer with your boat.

I have included a couple helpful articles and video for you as well.
