Tie Down, Kodiak, or Titan Disc Brake Kit Recommendation for a 3500 lb Axle Boat Trailer

Question:

I have a shorelander 2 axle boat trailer used in salt water. 3500# axles with spindle lube spindles. I have tie down vented disc brakes and have always had one caliper seize or almost seize after a year of use. The trailer gets backed into the water about 10 times a year. Is the Kodiac or Titan vented disc brakes more reliable in salt water? I dont want the expense of stainless. The spindles are 1 3/8 x 1 1/16.

I have a great solution for you, but Tie-Down disc brake systems have a pretty poor reputation. They are known to have issues like what you described as well as rotor warping. The most common recommendation is to ditch them and go with Kodiak components as they have a stellar reputation.

For a Dacromet Kodiak setup for a 3,500 lb axle the part # K2HR35D would be a great option that would work well.

Ideally you would go with the stainless steel setup part # K1HR35S (would need a quantity of 2)since you are in salt water. The price is a bit higher for this kit but it would be the last time you would ever have to mess with the brakes on your trailer as the stainless steel won't corrode.

Both kits mentioned will fit the spindle dimensions you mentioned as well.
