Installation

This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located in your trunk, behind the driver's-side and passenger's-side tail lights. You will have to remove the floor coverings, storage bag, rear scuff panel, sound system box, and the cargo tie-down fastener on the passenger's-side trim panel to access the connection points. Once you've plugged in the T-connector, run the hot lead to your car battery. Connect the lead to the included fuse holder, and then connect the fuse holder to the positive terminal on your battery.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way connector will be stowed in an out-of-the-way location within your trunk.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Powered Tail Light Converter with Surface-Mount Technology

A tail light converter is built into this T-connector. This converter is a circuit-protected, battery-powered unit that bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness. As a result, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.

Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of the trailer. This converter combines the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

Curt builds each tail light converter using surface-mount technology (SMT). This method of construction involves soldering electronic components directly to the surface of a printed circuit board. SMT eliminates the need for leads, which are used in older through-hole technology. The result is a circuit board that is smaller yet provides more routing area and that offers superior performance, reliability and durability.

Curt SMT Circuit Boards

Circuit boards constructed using SMT have been shown to perform better under rough conditions with excessive vibration than those made using the through-hole method. And where would vibration be more likely to occur than in towing applications? Curt converters also produce less heat, leading to increased durability and longer life. In addition, lower levels of resistance ensure better performance, especially for parts that operate at higher frequencies.

Each Curt circuit board is made using high-quality components that are pieced together in the most technologically savvy fashion, leading to greater predictability and reliability in functioning.

The T-Connectors worked as stated, great.Double sided tape did not work.
Running the power cable to the battery is a major task.
I ran it inside left under the trim panels.
There is a rubber boot encasing a wiring harness through the fire wall about 18" from the floor. I carefully drilled a hole to pass the power cable through. It sealed well and was inline to the battery.
This took me most of the day. Installation is successful.

It has been working flawlessly.

2018 Nissan Leaf

Kit includes everything you need. It's tricky to install (2018 Nissan Leaf SL), as you need to run a 12V wire all the way to the battery. Hiding the wire behind various interior panels is not too bad; poking a hole (carefully!) through the rubber gasket in the firewall, to get through to the engine compartment, is difficult. However, that's not the fault of the wiring kit. My only complaint is that the included double-sided tape didn't do a good job of keeping the wiring box in place.

2019 Nissan Leaf

Good morning,
I receive the Curt T-Connector
rapidly. I will install it later.

by:

Not so easy to install, itvtook my mechanic 3 hours!

Worth it in the end, everything works as expected and I have peace of mind knowing that this kit is "doing it right" for me Leaf.

by:
2013 Nissan Leaf

Worked well and plugged right into existing plugs. Directions were just ok; getting to the battery in my car is difficult and there was little info on how to do this. The double back tape was dead probably from the kit sitting for too many years; maybe a plastic bag around that would have helped keep it sticky. I measured the device when unused and found it has parasitic power usage beyond what I am ok with (but not horrible.) So I piggybacked the 20A fuse for accessories which saved me the trouble of getting to the battery and turned it off when the car is off. so needs better directions -1 star.

I would route the power wire to the battery instead of using a fuse. Unless there is something plugged into the 4-way to draw power it will not drain the vehicles battery.

John

12/1/2022

I used a fuse splitter nothing it plugs into will draw close to 20A. Running it to the battery is quite difficult and hardly documented. Still works fine. I didnt follow directions on cutting a hole in the plastic bottom panel, I cut a flap instead and made clips to hold it against the bottom of the hitch, this keeps it cleaner and more aerodynamic. I added this for fun and a trailer cover for those who have access to a 3d printer:

by:

Product works as intended. Due to the needs for multiple connection points (both tail lights and a separate 12V source) it isn’t the easiest install, but it works well.

Jim

I have only had the opportunity to use it a few times, but no issues

Nissan Leaf

Little pricey but worth it. The hardest part on my 2020 Nissan Leaf was running the power line from the battery to the rear of the vehicle. Luckily my friend has a lift otherwise it would have been much more difficult. Other than that everything went very quickly and the kit included everything I needed.

by:

It wasn't clear to me from the description that I would be expected to run a power wire through the interior of my car and through the firewall to the engine bay to attach to 12V. This makes installation much more difficult. Can you not use the power from the lights?

Etrailer Expert

Victoria B.

9/21/2020

I am sorry for any confusion on the installation. This wiring harness has a powered converter that attached directly to your Leafs battery so that the trailer lights are powered from there and cannot overload your vehicles lighting system. It is easiest to find a rubber grommet in the trunk pan and run the 12V power wire along the underside of your vehicle, avoiding any moving components, rather than trying to run the wire under the carpet on the inside of the vehicle.

by:

WOnderful product! Easy to use, easy to put on and take off.

Left review with hitch receiver

by:

Works well.

by:
Nissan Leaf

This took far longer to install than the receiver for the nissan leaf. Be careful not to break your many plastic clips. You also need to run a hot line to the battery, so full length of the car. You can run it like a speaker wire along the bottom plastic of the doors, but I had to drill a hole in the metal to transition from outside the threashhold to the inside. There may be a better way but I did not find it. Unless your good at this kind of thing I would say do not attemp to install yourself, and even if you can do this type of stuff, be prepared to work a good few hours on install.
In the end works well, just wish it was a little easier, and that there was a better place to put the socket. There is no good way except hanging out the trunk, without removing the rear bumper and prob drilling some holes.

by:
2005 Nissan Leaf

Harness kit looks to be of good quality, installation instructions are good although they leave the section about running the 12v to battery wire very vague. Install is best split into two parts, harness/converter install and the 12v to battery wire install. Read through the other reviews to best educate yourself before proceeding. If you have access to a vehicle lift, than IMO running the wire under the car is the easier option as opposed to running it through the interior. There is a rubber plug accessible from the rear trunk area, just to the passengers side of vehicle center (visible with mat folded forward) you can put a hole in to pass the wire to the exterior underside of the car. With the undercar belly pans removed (lots of plastic clips and 10mm bolts) you can route the wire cleanly up to the 12v battery. There was approximately 12" of excess wire that I trimmed off routing the wire this way. Installation was done on a 2022 Leaf.

by:

Worked perfectly

by:

really simple to do better than just splicing into wires then soldering not to mention when renting a trailer, you know the line is made to fit all 4 wired trailers.

by:

Installation was easier than expected, and the instructions were mostly helpful. This product requires that you run a power wire from the battery in the engine compartment to the tail light wiring harnesses in your trunk. There are two key requirements to getting the job done: getting the wire through the firewall and routing it through the car. A few online clips from audio equipment installers helped me figure this out, but some guidance in the instructions would have been great. Long story short, you can run it through the main wiring harness grommet to get it through the firewall. For my car, this required that I puncture the grommet with a screwdriver, wire hanger, etc., and pull the wire through. Then I popped off the plastic interior trim pieces along the front and rear sill plates which allowed me to feed the wire into the trunk area. I also had to remove some trunk trim pieces. Most trim is easily pried off and pops back into position.

by:
2012 Chevrolet Volt

Great product, installation instructions were pretty good. This harness requires a 12 volt line run from the battery in the front of the car. I was having problems getting the wire through the firewall, so I used a double-fuse tap off of the Leaf's fuse panel above the driver's knee. Worked fine.

by:
Nissan

Amazing that they made a hitch for such a small number of Nissan Leaf's out there. If you own a drill and a few basic wrenches you can install this - super easy. Although I haven't had it in more than a month or two, it seems very well made and likely to last the life of the car. Excellent instructions for installation on Youtube!

by:

I put this in my Leaf and it worked great...little difficult to run the power to the battery in the front of the car but good wiring harness.

by:

Looks good on the car. Only complaint is how long it took to install. Cost more to install than the hitch itself.

by:

Everything worked great the first time and I was happy with how little I had to modify to get it installed, could easily be removed without any damage.

by:

Good instructions, I had a bit of a hard time getting wire through the fire wall for the main hot.

by:

Easy to use and install if you follow i nstructions

I know it's tempting not to run the power wire of trailer wiring up to the vehicle battery like with the Curt kit part # C56227 that fits your 2014 Nissan Leaf but this annoying step actually serves a purpose. Allowing the trailer wiring to draw all of it's power from the vehicle battery prevents any trailer wiring shorts from making it to the vehicle wiring and damaging it.
