Axle Dimensions

Hub Face and Spring Center Measurements on Standard Trailer Axle

There are multiple ways to measure the length of an axle beam, but the hub-face-to-hub-face and spring-center-to-spring-center lengths are the most accurate. Hub face (A) refers to the length of the axle measured from the base of one wheel stud to the base of the wheel stud on the opposite side of the axle.

The spring center (B) is the approximate width of your trailer. It is measured from the center of the spring seat on one side of the axle to the center of the seat on the other. This axle beam comes with the spring seats welded on.

If you are replacing your trailer's axle, you should be able to figure out which type you need by determining your trailer's capacity, the bolt pattern of your wheels, the brake type and the aforementioned lengths.

Dexters

Dexters are made of high-strength steel and come with spindles and spring seats welded on. The spring seats are attached to the underside of the axle so that the leaf springs (sold separately) can mount beneath the axle. The result of this underslung design is a trailer that rides a bit lower for quick and easy loading and unloading.

Each axle is manufactured to create a certain camber angle. This ensures that the angle of the wheels is correct for your towing needs. Because the primary concern when towing is maintaining controlled, in-line movement, each axle is made so that your trailer's tires will run along the pavement evenly, with contact across the width of the tread. The result is excellent straight-line acceleration for steady, in-line tracking. You might notice the bend near the center of the axle; this is what ensures the proper camber angle. Having the center ride a bit higher and the sides of the axle bent lower allows the axle to give just enough to compensate for the load.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: 8 on 6-1/2 means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: 5 on 4-1/2 means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance (D) from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

After years of hauling firewood my Harbor Freight Trailer Axle fatigued and cracked. The Dexter Axle from etrailer got me back on the trail. Welded leaf spring seats on the opposite side of the axle at a spacing of 46.5 inches. The wheels stick out an additional 3/4 inch per side. The trailer now rides like a Cadillac. Very excited about putting my faithful trailer back in service, with a serious axle underneath that I have confidence in. The folks at etrailer very helpful and responsive. Thanks

Wonderific! Hauled camping gear up to Lake Tahoe 600 miles round trip, including my 5000 watt generator. Even had a big bear jump in the back to inspect that load when I arrived. The dexter turned the trailer into a very reliable and road worthy hauler. Since installing, made many trips up in Sierra to haul firewood and its been flawless!

I ordered this axle as a replacement for the one on my 1996 Haulin' 4x8 utility trailer. I'd neglected to maintain the bearings and when one went it destroyed my axle. This axle was an exact fit but the spring seats needed to be moved to the top of the axle. I ordered new seats and U-bolt mounting kit as well as the axle. I found a welder to remove the original spring seats and weld the new ones to match my application. Installation was a snap, I just followed the video included on the web site. Ordering my parts from etrailer really saved me $$ over the quotes I'd received from local shops.

by:

The product itself is great, much better in quality and weight rating to what I replaced. What could have been better is if I understood the design of the axle and the distance between the mounts. An engineering drawing with dimensions would have been helpful, especially to show the exact distance between the mount centers. This could have helped me buy all the right parts up front instead of having to order another round of parts to take to the fabricator to get welded. Again, nothing wrong with the part, I just didn't understand all the details, exact measurements, and what the difference between overslung and underslung axles was before getting started on the project.
I bought this axle to replace an axle on a 4x8 harbor freight trailer. However, the harbor freight trailer is metric and this axle is presumably standard, so the spacing between the mounts is off by just a little bit in relation to the trailer's springs, about an inch. Luckily, compatible brackets can be purchased from etrailer and welded on by your friendly local welder for a nominal fee. Also, it is worth noting that this axle was meant to be mounted above the leaf springs and has the original brackets on the bottom. The brackets I needed to add were added to the top, so I did not have to remove the old brackets.
Long story short, this is a great axle (much better than standard harbor freight axle), but needed to be modified slightly to fit this SAE axle to a metric trailer. So just make sure that's in your budget before buying the axle for your project.

Still loving the axle. Its definitely of better quality than what I had before. The only hiccup was as I mentioned in the review, I needed to modify it with additional brackets being welded on, so all in all, not too bad.

I would be happier if this axle had come with the hubs assembled. I am still struggling with getting that done.

Great no problems

by:

The axle and springs have worked great! They replaced parts that were beyond worn out, so they have given a new life to the trailer. They were straight forward to install, and your videos were helpful.

by:

Product came in two separate shipment, both were prompt, one had a tear in the packaging but the piece that was meant to be there was with the package, so all appears to be intact, will know for sure when we put together on the trailer in another 2 weeks as we have been gone for that length of time. Assuming all is order, should have a good fit. The free shipping for Superbowl was a nice bonus

by:

My review is more about the service than the product. I ordered the wrong axle. etrailer was wonderful about returning the product. I have dealt with these folks on several purchases now, and have always found them to be extremely professional and user friedly.

by:

Arrived quickly and had everything I ordered. was disappointed to find the grease on the axle when unwrapped was very dirty and old. It was a pain in the neck to clean off before installing the hubs as much of it had hardened.

by:

Blew out the bearings and destroyed the hub of my old axle while towing my boat. It was easier and cheaper to order a whole new complete axle from etrailer.com. Thanks

by:

The axle and hubs were great. A superior product and easy to install. I would definitely purchase from you again.

by:

etrailer has always had the product I needed. They charge a fair price. They do what they say they will do. They are a very good company to deal with, and the people are knowledgeable and clear in voice. Thanks to them.

by:

Customer Service was very friendly and responsive to my needs. Assisted in identifying the correct axle for my application and emailed the part information to place an on-line order. by:

Axle received was beyond my expectations. Met my requirements and more. Great product.

by:

One thing to note, when picking the right trailer axle there can be a bit larger of a measurement when taking the Hub Face to Hub Face measurement, but the spring center to spring center measurement needs to be spot on. While the axle is typically the most important factor in determining the weight capacity of a trailer, there are other components, such as the suspension system, wheels/hubs and the trailer frame itself that determine its overall capacity.
