Recommended Replacement Axle For Homemade Trailer
Question:
My trailer has a 1inch X 3.25inch spindle on a fixed axle. I am unable to find any hubs or wheels with integral hubs smaller than 1inch X 4. What is my most practical and cost efficient option? Replacing the spindles? I did buy a wheel with 4inch integral hub that will fit onto the 3.25 spindle but the spec sheet says that the bearing are 3 17/32 apart. Common sense tells me that this is not a good idea.

My recommendation is to replace the entire axle. That way you would not have any issues with replacement hubs, bearings, races, and other components you need for your trailer. I have attached a link to our product page for the axles we offer with idler hubs.
You would need to measure your trailer to find the correct size axle. If you find you can use a 60 inch axle measured hub face to hub face I recommend part # 20440I-EZ-60. This includes the idler hubs with bearings, races, and seals. It will work with 8 to 12 inch diameter wheels and includes EZ-Lube spindles that makes lubrication very simple. The hubs have a 4 on 4 inch bolt pattern and this axle has a weight capacity of 2,000 lbs with spring-center-to spring-center length of 48 inches.
If you find you can use an axle that measures 72 inches hub-face-to-hub-face I recommend part # 20545I-EZ-72-10. This has all of the components as the 60 inch axle but has a weight capacity of 2,200 lbs and a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern. The spring-center-to spring-center length is 58 inches. This axle will work with 8 to 12 inch wheels also.
I have also attached a link to our product page for some of the wheel and tire combos that may work for you.
