Installation

This custom-fit T-One connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located inside your rear cargo area. You will have to remove some interior paneling to access this harness. Once you've plugged in the T-connector, run the hot lead up to your car battery. Connect the lead to the included fuse holder, and then connect the fuse holder to the positive terminal on your battery and insert the provided fuse.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way flat connector will be stowed in your spare tire compartment.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

ModuLite Powered Tail Light Converter

A ModuLite power module is built into this T-One connector. Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of your trailer. This power module functions as a tail light converter to combine the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

With a ModuLite, your trailer's lights will be powered without overloading your vehicle's electrical system. Because the module draws power directly from your car's battery and bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.

This is my third hitch I purchased from e-trailer. Customer satisfaction is exceptional. Anytime I had a question there is always somebody answered the phone quickly. Directions were right on. Today I just installed my hitch for my 2018 Mazda CX-5. Trailer hitch came with all the right parts and instructions. Keep up the great work.

by:
Mazda

This was purchased for a 2018 Mazda CX 5. I did a review on the excellent hitch I purchased and spent more time talking about the wiring and how to remove the panels on the 2018. Can't use a hitch without wiring. Get yourself a cheap set of interior auto trim tools. Saved a lot of time popping out the trim connections. Push the trim back into place before you put the passenger seat latch in because it has a pop connection and is easy to do after the trim is in place. After removing all of the undercarriage covering, with plenty of bolts and pop up trim tabs, and taking forever to run the power cord up to the battery, I thought it would have been so much easier to run a hot lead from the power module over to the passenger side, along with the other wiring that has to go over there, and hook a cigarette lighter plug to it. When using the trailer, you pull out the trailer harness from the left side, and you can pull out the cigarette plug and plug it in on the passenger side for power. It is rated for 10 amps and the power module only 7.5 amps. I would have liked to have seen the trailer plug harness about 6 inches longer because it does not reach very far out of the car and I put the power module as close to the back of the car as I could. Plenty of wire holding straps and all the parts needed to do the job well. Everything needed to do the job well.

After one year and hundreds of miles pulling a small trailer, electrical hookup still works fine. I did run it out the bottom of the car and connected to the bumper for a more professional look.

by:

The product is great! The videos are a FANTASTIC guide. I was able to do everything myself with no trouble. The wiring lasted a 1,500 mile trip and looks like it will last much longer.

by:

I haven’t installed it yet. But shipping packaging can be a bit stronger.

After a year of use I am glad to say this product has held up with no issues whatsoever. Highly recommend this product.

by:

Works as it should

by:

Everything works fine and fits well, very happy with the purchase.

by:

It took more time to take the car plastic apart than it did to hook up the trailer wiring. 1 year later, still works great!

by:
2020 Mazda CX-5

arrived fast. Box was damaged and wiring harness bag looked crushed and taped shut again? Install video was extremely helpful. Was able to install hitch an wiring without having to raise vehicle!

by:

Exactly fits for the vehicle I purchased for.

by:

Everything you need for a simple and effective installation.

by:

Because I was advised to have a product which drew directly from the battery (not just from the harness) I chose this product and am very happy with it.
The only issue for me was that the under carriage shielding on the car required me to get it up on a lift to complete the routing, but it works perfectly and I would definitely recommend it.

Subaru XV Crosstrek

ETrailer professionally installed on my 2023 Subaru Crosstrek manual transmission car. The product works perfectly as advertised.

by:

Much simpler to install than the 2005 model. The use of M/F connectors for left and right taillight wiring interruption made the installation a breeze. Routing the power wire to the fuse box in the engine compartment was (and probably will ever be) the most difficult part. In one vehicle, I routed this wire inside the passenger compartment, passing through the firewall via an existing rubber grommet plug. In the CX-5, I followed the video showing how to route the wire outside of the passenger compartment via an existing rubber grommet plug and under the vehicle, but inside the Mazda shrouds. (Shroud routing was easiest, despite working under the vehicle.) In either case, Mazda provides a 10mm stub on the fuse block / battery connector. Buy a stainless 10mm nut and flat washer, separately, for this. All is good!

by:
Mazda

Shipping was very fast and the items were well packaged. The online video to help with installation was spot on and very helpful. Install on our Mazda CX-5 was easy with the included hardware kit. All and all took me about 45 mins to install the hitch. I did it all in my driveway with the help of my 2 sons and my wife.

by:

Installed the wiring harness a year ago. Installation instructions were easy to follow and using the provided wire clips meant no splicing/cutting wires. Wires and connectors feel heavy duty, and of very good quality. So far so good!!

This has nothing to do with the product, since it is necessary for all of these types of wiring harnesses: If you decide to install yourself, note the hardest part for me was running the wire through the splash shields under the vehicle to the engine battery. It may be best to see how to find a power source through a factory installed power port close to the rear of the vehicle. (e.g. old cigarette lighter)

It has been a year and product still works as designed. Note I only use a trailer approximately once per month.

by:

I haven't pulled a trailer yet. Only used a rack on my travels, but everything I've purchased from you hasn't let me down.

by:

I ordered a complete tow hitch set up for my 2020 Mazda. This is the 3rd hitch I have from them. They were all very easy to install and have preformed well. The wiring harnesses were very easy to install as well. This last order I got a bad harness and had a problem with a constant drain on the battery. They were very helpful in getting the information to me for a return of the bad part. Their customer service has been very good and I would recommend them to anyone for both good product and good service, as well as the best pricing I have found.

Maurice

I just recently ordered another harness to replace the bad one and all is good. Not totally sure the first one was bad now because I got a recall on the auto for an issue that drained the battery. May have been the problem but when I unhooked the one I thought was bad the battery problem went away. Now the recall was done and a new harness is installed and no issues.

by:

Install was not simple. Three guys and a lift. Had to put hitch on twice due too the fact we took off the muffler rubber holders. Can't get lower ones on with hitch in place. The electrical plug and play omg that was a joke. The entire left and right sides of back interior had to be removed to get to the "plug" and "play" connectors. I rate this as the most difficult hitch I've installed. I've done the BMW x1,x3 and Jeep Grand Cherokee hitch installs from your site...and they were seemless...awesome..but the mazada cx5 really sucked.

The installation of the harness is involved for this vehicle. I recommend taking a look at our installation video that we have on a 2019 Mazda CX-5. And also the FAQ that we have on routing the power wire to the battery.

by:
2019 Mazda CX-5

Video instructions were amazing. Easy to follow. Very easy to install and hook up.

by:

Fit perfectly on my daughters 2020 CX5. Routing the wire up to the battery was the worst of it. Thought about tapping into the accessory port as some have suggested but didn’t want to risk overloading that circuit depending on what else was plugged in.

by:
2017 Mazda CX-5

This applies to a wiring harness installed on a 2017 Mazda CX-5. The 2017 CX-5 was revised so that in order to change a rear light bulb, the lens is now removed from the vehicle instead of going through an access panel in the cargo area. Therefore there is no access panel in the cargo area as stated in the instructions or as shown in the video for the previous generation. The connection points for the trailer wiring harness however are still behind the cargo area trim panels and most of the trim panel must now be removed in order to access the connection points. The same steps must be followed as shown in the video for the pre 2017 model but the cargo trim panels must be more fully removed in order to access the connection points. There is a grounding point already present on the driver side along with a unused rubber grommet that can be used to route the power lead under the vehicle.

by:

Installed easy except running the power line back to the battery. The 2019 Mazda cx-5 had the underside of the car completely covered in panels. So I ran the power line inside the car under the door sil and into the fuse compartment by the drivers foot rest. I then used a fuse tap (replaces 1 fuse with 2 fuses and with a wire coming off the 2nd fuse to connect to the converter box. It is very easy to run the wire this way. I made sure that the fuse I tapped into was one that was powered all the time and not one that only had power when the engine was on and also was at least the same amperage as the converter wanted.

by:

Straightforward installation, pleased to have it on my vehicle.

by:

I have just installed the hitch and don't need the wiring harness yet. It looks like it will be easy to install once I get all the panels out of the way, (that's the difficult part). The kit looks complete and it is very well made. With regards to the video, should be a piece of cake.

by:
Mazda

This wiring kit was awesome. The video supplied was easy to follow, and I completed the job in about an hour and a half. The only thing different I did was instead of running power to the battery, I stole it from the positive feed coming from the aux dc power in the rear of the mazda. The lights are rated at 7.5 amps, and the aux plug is rated at 15amps. So as long as when you have the trailer hooked up you don't use that rear aux plug you will be fine. That fuse is by your left drivers foot. Just pull it when tapping into the wire. You have the entire rear end ripped apart anyway. I also installed the inline fuse so it is by the spare tire just in case. Either way, it is awesome and works great!

Although the recent CX-5s may have a power source bus in the hatch area you will want to run the wire for power to the battery. The reason I recommend the Tekonsha is because it will be more resistant to internal shorts of the converter box due to shorts on the trailer's wiring. This is mainly due to the higher amperage rating of the converter box (7.5/5 amps compared to 6/3 amps of the Curt) and because in general...
