It works well for my purposes! I bought it specifically to use with a rear hitch bike rack. It came fast, I installed in myself in an hour or so. Installation was straight forward, although it is definitely a tight fit. I actually used a floor jack to add a support while I got it snug and level. It's solid, doesn't seem to be going anywhere after a year. I've only used it to hold a bike rack and 2 bikes, so I can't say how strong it would be to pull a trailer. It mounts to the wheel well which I don't think would be solid enough to pull any real weight. That and the fact that the bulk of the hitch sits below the bumper are the reasons I don't give it 5 stars. Would be better if this were designed to conceal most of the hitch behind the bumper/bumper cover. I think there is space for it. That said it works well, wasn't expensive, arrived fast and it doesn't look bad.

I just put this hitch on a couple months ago and will say, love it. Etrailer makes installation easy with their YouTube videos and I lost the papers so I called them for the torque specs. I only use the hitch for a tray carrier Thule bike rack and I have 0 issues, I can even open my trunk with the bikes on the rack.
I would say the best part about Etrailer is value, high quality products, ease of installation and great customer service.
For those installing on an A4 take your time lining up the hitch, don't rush it. Taking my time, I was able to get the hitch almost completely level. I also used the silicone they recommended. I didn't have an angle drill, so I did drop the exhaust and it was easy from there. Good luck... And enjoy your new hitch, no more putting the bikes on the roof.

The product came in perfect condition, exactly fit my car (Audi A4 B7 Quattro) and it took me 35 min to instal as a DIY I thought it would be much longer.

by:

I did not have any trouble installing this hitch, however, it took some time to get it 'just right'. To get it square on the car, I had to use a length of pipe in the hitch tube to 'wedge' the hitch into position. Since I was drilling holes into the spare tire well, I only wanted to do it once & get it right! Except for me being a little OCD to make sure it was perfect (wife's car), the installation was relatively straightforward. It is a tight fit, but I think this also helps insure a secure installation.
One thing you lose with this hitch is the towing eye, as it is used to mount the hitch to the car. I do wish Curt could come up with something that looks a little nicer than the silver metal plate. Painting it black or getting it powerdercoated to match the hitch would help.
The initial plan was only to use this hitch for a bike rack, but now I am thinking about getting a small cargo carrier and adding a trailer light kit to the car for hauling a small utility trailer.

Finally, etrailer.com is always great. Nothing but good things to say about them.

I ordered hitches/Thule bike racks twice from eTrailer. Both times (a year apart) they exceeded my expectations for knowledgeable, fast, friendly service...and they gave me an unexpected discount the 2nd time around.

If I owned another vehicle...guess where I would go for my bike rack?

2005 Audi A4

I wanted to make sure anyone out there with a 2005 A4 Quattro Cabriolet knows this will fit. I was told it wouldn’t, but it fits great. I did a search comparing the rear undersides of the Cabriolet vs. the Sedan. They looked identical to me except I have those metal braces on mine, which never came into play at all. As mentioned in the description, I did have to make two small cuts in the lower facia to allow the rack to fit better. I may have been able to install it without those cuts, but it was pushing up a bit too much on the facia supports, so I decided better to make the cuts. They aren’t noticeable at all from above the car. I am happy the way it turned out. As sturdy as it does feel, I still plan on using straps to help minimize any stress on the well bolts even after being torqued to the vendors specs. I’ve used it once so far to carry my mtn bike. It has a 37lb rack on it carrying a 30lb mtn bike. It handled very well. Anyway, If you have a Quattro Cabriolet, look up the pics, if the rear ends look the same, it should fit fine. Take care.

Hitch came quicker than I thought, which was great. I used the free shipping, so it was just ground. E-mails from etrailer.com kept me up to date on my order status. Very happy with the price.
Took a little jockeying to get the hitch to fit properly, but ended up coming out nice.

by:

The product was received in perfect order. There were no issues with the receiver and build quality and finish were on par with a hitch of this cost. I would buy from etrailer again and in fact I have done just that.

by:

  • Trailer Hitch for a 2004 Volkswagen Passat TDI that Does Not Require Strap for a Bike Rack
The stabilization strap is a requirement on certain Curt trailer hitches such as # C11054 is meant to reduce some of the stress on the trailer hitch. If you do not wish to use a strap, then I recommend going with a different hitch. Since you want a hitch for a bike rack and will not be towing, I recommend Curt # 11164. I have included a link to the installation instructions for you to view. When drilling the frame to install the hitch using a special high quality carbide drill bit like...

The Thule OutWay Platform Bike Rack # TH65Jv is confirmed to fit your 2005 Audi Avant. However, it only has a maximum weight capacity of 33 pounds per bike. So I can't recommend using it to carry your two Electra Townie Go! bikes weighing over 50 pounds each. Also, like you said, the top clamps will likely not reach the tubes of the bikes. Instead I recommend adding a roof rack using the Malone # MPG202. Then you can use two of the RockyMounts BrassKnuckles Roof Mounted Bike Rack #...

For your 2003 Volkswagen Passat Wagon, the Curt Trailer Hitch # 11164 is a compatible trailer hitch receiver. Although the exterior body components of the 2005.5 and later model years of the Audi A4 Avant may be similar, or even the same, the frame structures are not. If you compare the mounting flanges for these two hitches, parts # 11164 and # C11180, you will note that the mounting points for hitch # C11180 are vertical (meaning the bolts will be oriented in an up-down direction) while the hardware for hitch # 11164 installs to the spare tire well in a horizontal direction. • Recommended Trailer Hitch And Trailer Wiring Harness For 2005 Volkswagen Passat Wagon
I strongly recommend not using either the trailer hitch or the wiring kit you got from the scrap yard. You doo not know if the hitch was involved in an accident or not. There can be stress on the metal that is not visible to the naked eye and would be unsafe.
