Video Transcript for Hopkins Wiring - Trailer Connectors - HM48480 Review

Today we're reviewing part number HM48480 from Hopkins. This is their Endurance 7-way trailer connector socket for the vehicle end. It's pretty simple and straightforward. Here's your 7-way connector with a sturdy dust cap. And as you can see, you have the 7-way trailer connector right there. And what you do is run your vehicle wires through the small end of this piece, bring them out here, connect them to the blades on the trailer connector, and then it snaps on, and you're all set.

So then all you have to do is mount this that way, and you're ready to go. Your hardware is included, and you also get two packages of Dielectric grease for your electrical connection. And there you have it for part number HM48480, the Hopkins Endurance 7-way trailer connector socket. .

Well I wasn't able to use this as there was no good place to install on my car without it practically dragging. Not a product problem at all. I tried to return and customer service was fast and super helpful... unfortunately return shipping would eat up any refund. So.. I get to keep it. good quality and product. Very happy with it and wish I could use it. Will keep it for sometime in the future when of course I will need it.

I bought this socket for my 2006 Volvo Xc90 to wire in the 4-Pole harness I also purchased from etrailer. Already had a few 7 Blade to 4-Pole adapters from my previous vehicle, and wanted the option of adding a trailer brake wire for a small camper later on so that was the main reason for the purchase. It also went very well with the Hidden Hitch I had already installed, bracket mounted right up to the existing tabs on the hitch. Super quick and easy install, as all of my etrailer purchases have been. Looks great on the truck, and functions great with the 180 Degree cover.

by:

I installed this receptacle in the side, top rail of my truck to supply power to my 5th wheel trailer. The connectors at the rear are very sturdy, I was able to tighten the connections very tight without fear of them stripping out. Looks like a factory installation!

great service

by:

Did not use this product…Installer of my Blue Ox tow package used another 7 pin connector..

by:

Good quality with seal on cover. Wiring installation was a little tight with the housing. It did mount perfectly with my Draw-tite hitch.

by:

I purchased this 7 blade connector to replace part 47435 (6 pole round to 7 blade (trailer)), which was allowing the whole cable assembly to droop close to the ground, and was fatiguing after four years of use. This new unit was easy to wire and install, however I wish to point out that the molded markings for the various wires (RT, LT, TM, GD, BR, etc.) are exactly backwards from the way the device is supposed to be wired. This was evident when I finished the installation and observed the turn signals were reversed, and nothing else worked (as a result of blown fuses). Once I corrected the wiring, everything works fine. Use the wiring diagram which comes with the instructions and not the molded pin markings on the device.

Thanks for the follow up. Thats impressive :- The two products are holding up fine. With respect to the Hopkins Endurance 7-Way Trailer Connector Socket - Vehicle End - Ergonomic Design, its working just fine, although the bracket is a little bent from being dragged on the ground when the back bumper on my KIA gets a little too close. Ive had to reinforce the mounting, because the fiberglass bumper isnt strong enough to take the hits. My problem, not yours. I will note, however, that the blades in the connector dont grip the slots in the trailer portion very well, so if I dont have the trailer part totally ed where the little latch in the top of the gate holds, the connecter easily falls out. As for the six pin to seven blade adaptor, everything is fine.

by:

very easy to install. Nice heavy duty piece. using on a stacker trailer we have at the shop that uses a pig tail with female 7 way plugs on both ends. works well for us. great service and fast shipping! Thanks!

STILL WORKING GREAT!

by:

Used your product to replace a defective product purchased from another vendor that failed on first use.this hopkins endurance was superior in every way. Thank you

by:

Very easy to install. Good quality, looks like it will hold up over time. I ran my 4 pin right next to it for a clean look.
And as always great customer service.

by:

Still works 1 year later, even after I slammed it on the rocks while off-roading.

by:

I purchased this draw-tite trailer hitch from etrailer about one year ago. I installed it myself, which was very easy to do without issue. Four bolt installation. Pre-drilled holes into the frame from the factory.I also purchased all of the wiring associated with the Hitch that was a plug and play into the right and left tail lights of the Jeep. There was no cutting no soldering no taping of wires. It was a matter of removing the tail lights a total of 4 screws, removing the tail lights, unplug the tail light wire and plugging in the wire kit and then plugging the wires back into the tail lights. I have to say this whole process took me about one hour total. Including putting the trailer hitch on and do the wiring. Everything has and continues to work well after a year and looks factory. Thank you etrailer.

The receptacle has reasonable good terminals for hooking up wires. Since I installed it in Aug of 2018 and it is now May 2019, it is difficult to clearly remember, but I seem to recall it came with a diagram for wire connections. As with all the receptacles for plugging in the trailer cord there are two things that will fail before the receptacle itself; 1) the bracket will likely rust away, 2) the spring to keep the cover closed will rust away and fail to function after awhile. I coated the bracket with liquid rubber that is commonly used for tool handles, and tried to get oil in to the spring hinge. Also seal the area where the wire cable enters. Sparingly used wire conductive lube on the wire & terminals. I live in upstate New York where there is a lot of salt used on the roads in the winter. Hope to get 3 to 5 years out it. It's a good devise.

by:

Easy to connect. Fits well & seems stu rdy.

by:

etrailer gave excellent service. Shipping was prompt. Email followup was excellent.

I needed a part to hook up to a Silverado 3500 with the wires to the bed already there (taped up at the front of the bed on the driver side) and didn't want to tap into the existing plug on the bumper.

The L Shaped bracket is easily detachable so that the plug can be screwed directly into the sheet metal of the truck bed once a hole is cut.

However 2 things....the unit comes with nuts and bolts so get ready for a trip to Home Depot to get some sheet metal screws of some sort for most installs in the bed. Second, the holes that the screws must go in are hex shaped which is great for the bolts that come with the unit but not for sheet metal screws so be sure and get screws with a small enough head to countersink into the holes or with a big enough base so as not to sink into the hex shaped holes.

by:

Worked great. Needed a 7 pin round trailer connector for my 1936 Chevrolet pickup. This will work on most any vehicle.

by:

Great product, shipped promptly. The video on etrailer.com made installation a breeze. Even comes with non-corroding grease for terminal connections.
I got stuck as an amateur wire-installer and had to call etrailer.com for some technical advice (didnt have a purple wire or orange wire as all wiring diagrams online showed....) the tech support was super knowledgeable and got me running in no time!

by:

This is just what you need to fix a completely trashed factory receptacle, in our case, on a Toyota Tacoma. I had to flatten the mounting bracket because I couldn't remove the stock bracket (rusted bolt), but that was easy as long as you have a drill to open up the holes for the receptacle to attach to the bracket.

by:

Came with nice set of installation instructions and wiring diagrams. Also came with installation bracket and bolts for mounting, dielectric grease packets, and rear cover to help seal up connections. Well made product.

by:

My factory connector cracked.
I installed
a Hopkins plug on our trailer several months before, so I purchased the connector. It is a great product and easy to install.

by:

PART IS STILL ON MY TRUCK AND WORKING PROPERLY. NO PROBLEMS WITH PART OR INSTALLATION. SHIPPING WAS ON TIME AND WAS IN PERFECT CONDITION.
LOOK FORWARD TO DOING BUSINESS AGAIN IN THE FUTURE. THANK YOU , THOMAS

by:

I have owned two of these connectors and would buy again. Just as advertised and simple to install if you have any wiring ability.

by:

Purchased a boat that had the male connector that required this type of connector.
It was easy to install and has worked perfectly for the last year.

by:

Great value. Toyota wanted $235 for the replacement which included an 18" wiring harness with a Weatherpack connector. I cut the Toyota harness at the failed socket and attached the wires to the new socket as shown in diagram.

by:

Products were delivered with very short wait time.

Adapter cable HM47065 is a replacement of the original cable purchased for towing in 2012.

Socket HM48480 is a replacement of the socket that was on the motor home when purchased used in 2012.

They haven't been installed yet, but I don't expect any issues.

Thanks

  • What Size Wire Loom Is Recommended for Trailer 7-Way Wiring
For a wire loom for 7-way wiring we recommend 1/2 inch diameter like part # 459075-1 that is sold by the foot. I have a 7-way adapter on my desk that has a wire loom on it that is 1/2 inch so I know this size would be correct.

  • Troubleshooting Trailer 7-Way Wiring Where Only Running Light Circuit Functions
I would get a circuit tester like the part # PTW2992 to test the pins on the vehicle side of the wiring for voltage when the various taillight signals are applied as this will tell you if the problem is on the vehicle or trailer side. If the voltage is on the pins correctly it's the trailer but if not it's the vehicle and you'd need to basically trace wires to find problem and fix as needed. You can also check the fuses under the hood as that can sometimes be the issue as well.
