Compatibility of Curt TruTrack # C17500 Weight Distribution System with 9,000 lb Trailer

Question:

So if I have a trailer that GVW is 10,500lbs and I use a weight distribution system like Curt TruTrack Weight Distribution System w/ Sway Control - Trunnion - 10,000 lbs GTW, 1,000 lbs TW and I only load the trailer to lets say 9000lbs, would that system work for me? I drive a 2013 RAM 1500 with the tow package and the hitch is a class IV.

Weight distribution systems are classified by the range of tongue weights they can handle. The Curt TruTrack, part # C17500 is rated for tongue weights ranging from 800-1000 lbs. Trailer tongue weights are usually from 10-15 percent of the loaded trailer weight. If you load your trailer to 9000 lbs, at 10 percent, you'd be at 900 lbs of tongue weight that would work just fine with that weight distribution system. Worst case, if you're closer to 15 percent, you could be overloading the system, so I'd verify the fully loaded tongue weight of your trailer before towing it. I've linked you to an article that shows how to do this.

Keep in mind that the tongue weight of your fully loaded trailer should also include anything stowed in the truck bed behind the rear axle.
