An example of sag on a vehicle's rear axle under a heavy load

Whether you're hauling heavy loads in your bed or cargo area or you're towing a trailer, you will often see the rear of your vehicle sag while the front end rises. In these cases, the rear axle is handling not only the weight of the cargo, but also more of the vehicle's weight. Because less weight is on the front axle, the front tires are making less contact with the road. Overall handling - traction, steering, and braking - is negatively affected. But the resistance from Timbren's Suspension Enhancement System works with your factory suspension to keep your vehicle level and improve your driving experience.

Diagram of the Timbren spring installed

The Timbren system comes with custom-fit brackets that are bolted onto each frame rail above the rear axle. Hollow rubber springs are bolted to the bottom of the bracket and hang down to where the bottom of the spring sits, 1" above the axle. The inch of clearance allows the existing factory suspension to operate normally under light loads and standard terrain, ensuring the smooth, comfortable ride that you are used to.

Animation of a standard Timbren rubber spring

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Systems are designed to work progressively. When the hollow rubber springs are compressed, the convoluted design causes them to quickly collapse along the folds. Once the folds are compacted, the stacked barrel shape increases resistance, stiffening the suspension and keeping your vehicle level.

Timbren suspension system works to prevent body roll

Each hollow rubber spring works independently to support the driver's side or passenger's side of your vehicle. This is helpful when you swerve or make sharp turns. Each spring is activated when it is needed, so body roll is greatly reduced. The independent action also works well when you are hauling off-center loads.

An example of a trailers swaying

Because the vehicle handles better with the springs, less turbulence will be passed along to the trailer, and this helps to keep the trailer in line. Your driving comfort is further enhanced if the trailer does begin to sway (from a gust of wind or a passing semi), because the movement from the trailer is not transferred to your vehicle. This also works to make the sway subside more quickly.

An empty truck on a bumpy road without Timbren

Another great feature of the rubber construction is that the springs absorb most of the road shock, creating a smoother, more stable ride overall. Wear and tear on the factory suspension is also lessened because the rubber springs work to prevent bottoming out on rough roads.

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Compared to the Competition

Timbren's Suspension Enhancement Systems are much easier to install than air springs - there are no air hoses to run, no compressors or gauges to hook up, and no manual adjustments to make. The rubber construction makes Timbren's springs more elastic than similar products constructed of microcellular urethane. And more elasticity allows for a more comfortable ride because the rubber has more travel.

2008 Ford F-250 Super Duty

The hardest part was the de-installation of the factory bump stop. Installation of the Timbren’s was simple and easy.

My truck is 2008 F250 V10 Crew Cab 4x4 with factory overload springs. I have a B&W fifth wheel & gooseneck hitch installed. I did notice the difference in towing my 34’ fifth wheel trailer. The ride and handling was improved. I would recommend them.

by:
2005 Ford F-250 Super Duty

Install was easy! Hooked up to the trailer loaded a f150 on it my truck maybe squatted an inch! Definitely can tell a difference handling when towing heavy!

by:

The instructions were perfect and easy to follow. Installation went off without any questions.
The "Aeon spring" is barely touching the bump spot on the axle. The instructions say there should be 1/2 to 1-1/2 inch for an unloaded truck. I have replacement Ranch Hand Bumpers and a tool box filled with tools (the instructions say if the truck is loaded at all, the Aeon spring may be touching).
Highly recommended.

by:

Seem well made, because they (FR250SF on 2008 F250) use existing frame holes they are slightly offset either forward or to the rear of the spur they contact, but there is no indication in the instructions as to which is better if either. Curious what will happen when I pull my 5th wheel, I primarily bought these because the FOMOCO ones had crumbled to pieces.

I reached out to Timbren about the question that you had in your review and they advised that you should use the holes that make the kit align the rubber to the axle the best, and that one way is not better then another just that one way will fit better depending on your vehicle.

Pulled my 5th wheel 4000 miles after installation. Seemed to help rear squat that 4x4 have. No durability issues. Although offset slightly they seem to stay underneath the spur on axle. Bottom line, happy with purchase.

Etrailer, and its employees, is a great company. They stand behind everything and do a super job making their clients happy.

I am satisfied with the Timbren suspension I put on my Ford F250. The load is stabilized and no sagging ect, the ride is a little rougher though , overall very happy

Arrived on time. Easy upgrade. Easy installation. 06 F250 4x4

Ford F-250 Super Duty

I haven't installed them yet. etrailer.com is a great site with great service. After the purchase I see I could have gotten these a little cheaper on Amazon but no regrets. Will post again if I'm able after I've installed the product, lowered the truck camper on the F250 and put some road time on it.

Nice ride improvement. Easy to install once the old bump stops were off. Stabilizes the ride from side to side very nicely. Go slow on the washboard surfaces. Definitely aids in lessening the sag of my F250 with the slide-on camper loaded in the bed.

by:

Very easy to install and it work pretty good when I have weight on my truck.
Shipping was very fast,
Definitely worth it
Thank you

by:

Received my shipment super fast, even after placing a duplicate orders online and calling customer service to straighten out my order. Installation was straight forward, quick and easy. Noticed a difference right away, towing or not, made my truck more stable. Thanks E-trailer for your great product lines and service.

I believe I stated installation was easy, the product has worked well and met all expectations.

2009 Ford F-250 Super Duty

Replaced bump stops on my 09 F250 with these. They are easy to install, and dont effect your ride when you are not carrying a load.

by:
Ford F-250 Super Duty

Product was purchased based on mechanics recommendation for a friends F250 being used to tow a thirty foot gooseneck 3 horse trailer with living quarters. Post installation performance was all we hoped for. Service from etrailer, before and after the sale, is what every mail order company should strive to achieve. I will not hesitate to utilize etrailer in the future. They are flagged in my favorites.

2009 Ford F-250 Super Duty

I installed these on my 2009 F250 Super Duty 4x4. Installation was fairly easy by following the instructions that were given. I found out when pulling 11000 pound fifth wheel that I have a lot less rear spring bounce and much less roll on corners. I would recommend this to anybody that wanted better rear stability well hauling a heavy load.

by:
2005 Nissan Leaf

Installed these on a 2005 F-250. Went very quickly, it took longer to get the tools and jack out than it did to remove the old bumpstops and install these. I would note that the instructions specify 1/2" to 1 1/2" between the spring and the lower part of the bumpstop, and on my truck there was less than 1/4" without the spacer. I do not believe the factory springs are worn or sagging as the ride height is the same as it always has been, and the truck has only seen light use. At any rate the leaf springs are stiff enough that the Timbrens do not seem to contact the bumpstop during normal operation, so I haven't let it worry me.
As far as load carrying, I've only pulled my 5th wheel a short distance at relatively low speed, but the suspension sags much less and the truck feels considerably more stable.

by:
2001 Ford F-250 Super Duty

I have a Timbren rear suspension system on my 1982 Chevy truck that I still own, and after 20 years they still work fine. This latest set installed easily on my 2001 F-250 and they work just as well with and without a load.

by:

Installed them, and hit the road pulling my 22ft, roughly 14k trailer. The ride is more firm, but the control with the trailer is well worth it. Truck used to get very loose in the rear and sway, making me very nervous at times. Timbrens worked magic!

by:
2009 Ford F-250 Super Duty

Works great. Exactly the fix that I needed for my truck.

by:

The Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System installed fairly easy. The hardest part was removing the old bump stops, when loosened they started to spin and I had to block them up to finish removal. I can't wait to connect to my 5th wheel and see how the truck rides. As with every product I have purchased from eTrailer, delivery was quick and tracking was great.

by:

Easy to install and function great. Driveability is much nicer with not so much pin weight pushing on the overload spring now.

by:

Just installed the new bump stops and so far I really like what I’m seeing. Installation took about 30 minutes after pre assembly. Make sure to read all instructions to insure a centered fit over the axel. All necessary hardware was included and I’m excited to see how my truck handles pulling my camper. Great product!!

by:
Nissan Leaf

Huge help with rear end sag. But by leaf springs are weak so the truck sits on theses all the time, unloaded. It makes for a rougher ride. Ideally the truck should not rest on them with no load.

by:
2005 Ford F-250 Super Duty

Thanks

by:

Definitely makes a big difference when pulling my fifthwheel. The rig is much more stable, even in cross winds.

by:
2007 Ford F-250 Super Duty

Install these on a 2007 Ford f250... These springs are a little worn out from being a landscape truck... Put these on to help handle the load and after two weeks there's a huge difference I would highly recommend to anyone hauling any kind of extra loads... Great price!

by:

Very happy it fixed my nightmare problems. I highly recommend the system.

  • Suspension Enhancement Recommendation for 2008 Ford F-250 Towing 2009 Keystone Toy Hauler
The biggest advantage to using an air bag system with the internal Jounce Bumpers, like the Air Lift LoadLifter 5000 Ultimate, # AL88398, is that you get the best of both worlds. The air bags offer the variable load carrying capability and reduce the strain on the rear suspension of your F-250. The internal jounce springs help to improve ride comfort and also work as a fail-safe if the air springs lose pressure. An on-board compressor system, part # AL25592 is available that would allow...

  • Timbren Suspension Enhancement Recommendation for 2010 Ford F-250
For unloaded ride quality you really want to go with suspension enhancement that does not make contact at all times. The Timbren kit part # TFR250SDF is going to be the best option as it does not contact when unloaded. This is the lower capacity kit at 6k. The 8,600 lb kit would be much harsher and would not be what you would want.

On a truck that has overload springs, such as your 2007 Ford F-250, the overload springs could be on the top or bottom of the stack. It is often a smaller spring, yes, and it is not necessarily bound to the other springs. If the overload springs are on the top, like in the video I have linked showing installation, you can use # SSA22. For a model that has bottom overload springs you would use # SSA13 but this seems to be less common. I have also linked the instructions for each of these...

  • Which Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement To Use On A 2008 Ford F-250
I recommend going with the Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System Item # TFR250SDF for your 2008 Ford F-250. These are designed to support the weight in the back of the truck. Since your hauling a 5th wheel and the hitch weight is only 1430lbs the Timbren Rear Suspension Enhancement System Item # TFR350SDF would be overkill.
