Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

No problems at all. I use it almost every day and I still like it. These days it’s nice to buy something that works as advertised. Great job guys!

by:

I did not have any plans to actually haul a trailer so I can't comment yet on how it works to haul a trailer, but I'm sure it will work as is designed...

... However, I purchased it because I became aware of the "Voluntary Recall" from Chrysler because some of the 2003 Jeep grand Cherokees had safety issues because of the potential, that; under certain conditions, when in a rear end collision, in regards to the gas tank, there is a potential for the gas tank getting ruptured and a potentially deadly fire occurring, so I wanted to double-up on preventing that.

I decided it was a necessary preventative measure to get this
'Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit - Class III - 2" '.

As far as the quality of the actual product, I would give it a 5 star rating, but instead, I gave it a 4 star rating, because of the inadequate packaging it gets shipped in.

I ended up having to get a total of 4 shipped to me for 2 different purchases of this product because of;
1- the 1st one was bent, not so bent that it was obvious, but it just wouldn't bolt-up to the Jeep. I don't know on the 1st one, whether or not it was bent because of a manufacturing issue or from shipping damage. It didn't look bent to the naked eye, but it was.
I measured between the mounting holes and discovered it was almost 2 cm off from being equal at opposing diagonal cross-section measurements. The one that it was replaced with, (the 2nd one), bolted right up with no problems and the diagonal cross-section measurements were much closer to being equal.

2- After the Jeep got rear-ended, I wanted to get another new one to install after the body shop repairs get finished for the same safety reasons mentioned above.

On this 2nd one, which turned into a 3rd then a 4th one because of shipping damage, as with the 1st one, the shipping damage to the packaging was somewhat severe. The hitch was loose inside of the box and flopping around and part of the hitch was protruding outside of the box...

... Because of that, I was concerned that the Receiver Hitch was probably bent out of proper mounting alignment like the 1st one was.

Also, I was not able to get engineering specifications from etrailer.com for the exact measurements between the mounting holes in the Receiver Hitch so I wasn't able to take any measurements to compare. So, just like the 1st one, (the 1st purchase), I returned it for a what would hopefully be an undamaged and not out of alignment or bent replacement, which I did receive. The body shop won't be finished with it for another couple of weeks so I won't know if it bolts up or not, but I'm pretty sure it, like the 2nd one that I got from the 1st purchase order, will bolt-up as it's supposed to.

That being said, I am very glad I did get the Trailer Hitch Receiver the 1st time because I was hit from behind by a low vehicle and I think it prevented a rear end collision caused Gasoline Fire and potential serious injury, or worse from happening.

Also, the Trailer Hitch Receiver will work quite well for hauling any trailer that the Jeep is legally able to haul and it will work well with a Hitch Mounted Wench or with a Receiver Tow Shackle for when I do go on Four-Wheel-Drive Adventures.

It sounds like that the side brackets were knocked out of alignment which can happen while in transit to our facility or to you. We do have a FAQ that can assist with moving the side brackets of the hitch back into alignment to allow for installation.

Re: Comments It sounds like that the side brackets were knocked out of alignment which can happen while in transit to our facility or to you. We do have a FAQ that can assist with moving the side brackets of the hitch back into alignment to allow for installation. The suggestion that the consumer is supposed to be responsible for flexing back the hitch receiver may work for some, but in my case it definitely was not an option because the way that I would have had to flex in order to realign the mounting would have required a very large amount of force to change the angle, whereas... ...Even if I could put that much force into flexing it, [it] would have required far more than the instructions imply that it would take... ...In my case for the 1st hitch, before the rear end collision, I am very sure that it was a manufacturing issue, however, it could have been bent in shipping, I doubt it though because of the way it was bent. I dont think ping it off of a truck or a loading dock would have had enough force to cause it to bend the way it was bent. Besides that, the product is advertised as ready to bolt-on, not installer may need to modify the the hitch that is supposed to be ready to bolt on in order for it to fit... ...To me, for example, the customer having to modify a product beyond a small amount of filing a mounting hole example, on a ready to bolt on product is unacceptable. That being said, I would recommend the hitch receiver with the caveat of if you have the time to return the 1st one or are going to take your vehicle to a certified mechanic that specializes in hitch receiver installation, such as [online].

2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Arrived 3 days after I ordered, 2 days quicker than anticipated. The threaded hole that didn't have a bolt in it required more than penetrating oil and a good brushing. It needed to be tapped. I removed the bumper (5 minute job) and used one of the stock bolts and penetrating oil with an impact gun and worked the bolt in and out, cleaning the threads of the bolt each time. It took about 10 minutes before the bolt went all the way. Then with the bumper still removed, I propped the hitch on my lap while sitting on my mechanics chair, started one bolt, then slide to the other side and started another. I didn't need a helper it was pretty easy. Torqued the 5 bolts as directed in the installation instructions, then reassembled the bumper.

by:

We are very happy. It also relieves the worry that initiated purchase. (Jeep dilly dally on recall regarding unprotected gas tank, which is right behind that hitch.) It was easy for my husband to install. Product completely as described and was delivered earlier than expected.

Thank you.

by:
2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Every thing was fine, I did have to use a jack to spread the width so bolt pattern fit (not that hard to do). I was a little concerned about the square spacers. It appeared that I did not need them, bolted up fine without them.

by:

I only received 2 bolts and 2 washers. I did not receive any nuts. I was supposed to receive 5 bolts, 5 nuts, 5 washers and 5 spacers, plus any other hardware needed to install the hitch. Hopefully etrailer will send me the needed hardware when they read this review.

Actually, the necessary hardware was included. The remainder of the bolts needed are already existing on the vehicle and are to be reused per the instructions. The nuts are already welded into the vehicles frame at the time the vehicle was manufactured. You can see this by checking out the instructions and the install video Ive linked for you.

Ordered and installed a Draw-Tite custom hitch receiver for a Jeep Grand Cherokee. Order processing and shipping, excellent. Installation was a snap, using available videos takes all the guess work out of installation. Also ordered T one wiring harness to complete the package. These people are great to work with, they bend over backwards to do it right.

Product is great. Installation was a breeze. Has performed flawlessly since installed.

2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Love the product. Truly. Made the right decision choosing etrailer.

I would note, as many others have, regarding the installation on a 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee et al., the hitch did not come with ALL the necessary bolts to properly install.

This presented a rather large headache & delay in finally being able to use it. I wish etrailer would've just charged me an extra dollar and put a variety of extra bolts to fit that one bolt hole, which apparently is an anomaly on many Jeeps.

Very happy otherwise. Again, I made a great decision with etrailer.

by:

Product is as good as described. Easy to install, fit was right on. Thank you.

by:
2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee

GREAT product! You can't argue with this well designed hitch. In every [online] or etrailer video that I watched, they tell you it's a 2-person job. I did it by myself only because there wasn't anyone around to help! But, sure as shootin' I got in on there. HINT: MAKE SURE the holes in the frame of your Jeep Grand Cherokee are cleaned out and ready to go BEFORE you do anything else. I had to clean the bolt holes and ultimately re-thread them to get the supplied bolts up in there. What a PAIN that was. AND, a day or 2 (or more) before you try to unbolt the existing gas tank shield, liquid wrench or whatever you use, the existing bolts (which you will re-use) because HIGHLY LIKELY they'll be frozen in place. Once all your bolts holes are clean and ready to go, everything else comes easy, EVEN IF you're doing it by yourself. Aloha noho'i ~ ~ ~

by:

I've used eTrailer a few times and have experienced nothing but great results. They are so consistently excellent it's almost eerie. The instillation videos are accurate, the prices are good, the delivery is timely, their products always fit and the bolting on process always seems to perfectly match their difficulty rating. Never a bad surprise, always a smile. If it can get better than that I am not aware of how!

2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee

I usually do a lot of searching for the best price when buying a product. In this case it was a no brainer. After looking at the etrailer web-site, with all of the helpful information, good reviews, I just purchased from etrailer. Service was great and product was correct. Hitch fit and came with the extra bolts, spacers and washers needed for installation. the reason for 4 stars is because the box came with some holes in it so the hitch paint was scraped off in I few spots. Not a big deal, in Michigan it is impossible to keep a hitch rust free for long, so it is nice to start out with full factory finish. I f I need another hitch, I will deal with etrailer.

by:

The product was exactly as it was suppose to be. The miss was on the installation. On a 4x4 there is a stamped metal skid plate that can be wider than this hitch. And as the hitch slides up around the gas tank, the skid plate might get in the way and could require some encouragement from a floor jack to press the hitch up. Then there is the lovely task of getting all the holes to line up. Now with the skid plate a little narrower, those holes no longer line up with the hitch and chassis. Again, parts from the Auto manufacture are all different and some might not have this problem at all.

by:
2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee

The trailer hitch fit like a glove and was very easy to install on my jeep. This is the second hitch that I have purchased from etrailer. They provide excellent hitch products and also there shipping is outstanding.

Everything about this trailer hitch is awesome, it fit my Jeep perfectly and it is built to withstand all the towing power that I could ask for

by:
2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee

I ordered this product due to its ratings and I have seen this brand on a lot of vehicles. I liked the prices offered with a detailed description for each one. I received the item much sooner than the estimated date, which I liked even more. I had someone assigned to my oder to over see my account and keeping me informed as to shipping.

It's seems easy enough to install however, I have not done so as of yet, due to the fact my house is being renovated. As soon as the work is done rest assured, I'll be in the garage installing the hitch.

Can't wait!
Thanks again for the great service,

Larry S.

I looked up the towing capacity of your 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.0 liter and it can tow up to 5,000 lbs. So a 4,000 lb trailer wouldn't be a problem at all. So for a hitch the Draw Tite part # 75139 would be a great option. It installs easily and has more than enough capacity. Then for trailer wiring the Tekonsha part # 118369 is very reliable and installs easily. Then for a ball mount with a 2 inch ball you'd need the part # C45134 and you'd be set.

If you're planning on purchasing a used hitch, be sure to examine it carefully. If the paint is cracked anyhere on the hitch, it could be an indication that the hitch has been damaged or bent. Make sure there isn't excessive corrosion. Surface rust is okay, but if it's eating through the hitch I'd recommend passing on it. The hardware used to attach the hitch to the vehicle is considered a one-time use item only. If the bolts are torqued more than once, they can stretch which weakens them. We...
