Image of Ford Escape exhaust with vibration dampener

Some Escape models beginning with the 2010 model year have a vibration dampener installed on the tailpipe which interferes with the installation of this hitch. The dampener can be removed and left off or welded onto the other side of the exhaust pipe.

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

I was very surprised to hear from etrailer after a year, because I am very happy with my purchase. My wife actually helped me install the hitch. We had watch a youtube video on the installation, and it only took us about 30 minutes! With the electrical assessory harness that I also ordered, the electrical install was the icing on the cake.
I have used my utility trailer several times on different projects, and I couldn't have done all that without a superior product. Thank you very much etrailer!

More modifications were needed to reinstall the box in left side. It was a little tougher than expected. Small modifications to hitch would make it unnecessary

by:

Yes, I received the hitch a few days ago, and actually, I just had it installed this morning by my mechanic. So far, it's working great. I've attached two pictures.
I appreciate the quality product and great customer service.
Have a good day!

Photos of my installation. The hitch was easy, but the wiring was a bit complexed

2011 Escape Bike hitch and wiring harness. Videos were extremely helpful. Installed yesterday after a week in bed with a virus. It helps when your neighbor has a body shop (tools) and can come haul you out from under the car if he doesn't see any movement in 15 min. Have some extra wire ties handy and you will be ok. I put two coats of etching primer and 2 more coats of white automotive enamel on my hitch so it would match my body paint. If you are working by yourself , do the front two bolts first , lift the hitch ( w/ draw bar in) up on a bucket with some shims until the back holes line up then cinch them up. This is my second e-trailer hitch I,ve done, won't go anywhere else.

The hitch has been everything I expected. I have used it mainly as a bike hauler and for a cargo rack. I painted mine white to match the Ford Escape and I have a problem where the safety chains attach. They scrape all the paint off showing the black, but a little touch up once in awhile solves the problem. I just dont like to see rust stains forming around the welds. I would buy this product again.

I was very disappointed with the packaging. The box was busted through and the hitch has at least a half dozen scratches through the powdercoat. I'll have to touch it up before I can install it and hope it doesn't rust. Hopefully it's smooth sailing from here.

by:

Bolts did not fit in the frame holes. Had to grind the holes a bit for bolts to fit.

Installation was a breeze and as the video directed!

Hyundai Elantra

This email asking how my trailer hitch is doing caught me totally off guard. That's follow up service that you don't see now a'days.
Let me tell you, just order the right one and it is so easy to install. I haven't thought about it since the first couple weeks. You know, the new period. I have a trailer hitch and I think I will use my trailer for this trip to the hardware store hahaha. After that, it's become like every other tool I own. It pulled HEAVY loads PA->NC a few times during a move. Then a wild move to the west coast where I pulled trailer from NC all the way to the west coast. Unknown trips to the dump, hauling things for family (nice to have a family member with a trailer and hitch.) I also bought a shelf for putting things on the back like coolers or boxes or things you just rather not have in your car. Didn't work well for the Elantra, too low to the ground for the shelf attachment sticking off the back.

Suffice to say, this is my opinion, I used my trailer above spec weight on occasion (I believe this because tires were rubbing on the fenders for a bit just before I reached my destination.) I tried to maintain tounge weight, but may have exceeded that as well ?? I could have been lucky, I could have been within tolerance but I have a history of breaking tools because I use them alot, (and sometimes you gotta improvise, anybody tells you different has not worked on anything anywhere anytime.) My hitch never budged a bit. It was so great, I believe they should be standard issue on a car.

If you want a trailer hitch on your car, don't forget the light package, they had the one for my make and model. I just clipped it in, put on the hitch by myself and loved it ever since. (You may want to have assistance holding the hitch in place while putting the bolts in place. I did it myself but I have done lots of mechanical work.) Get one, stop searching, be happy.

Product fit perfect and installed great.
Will definitely make moving my bikes easier.
Thanks.

I thought that I could easily install this, per the instructions, But I'm lazy and retired...So, a guy up the street runs a "mechanic on the Road" repair (in the street) business, among others. Anyway, since he's under cars a lot I thought he could easily install the hitch. After a failed start, I showed him how to "Fish" the bolts/washers, and after another try or two he succeeded...however, he claimed that he had to grind down the bolt/washer assy. Charged me more...still better than doing it myself at my age. I'm sure that it can be easily done as described with a little moxie

by:

It was simple to install and I save a metric ton of money. Could it be better????

etrailer was excellent, the hitch was back ordered but I needed the bike rack for my other vehicle. etrailer actually split the order so that I could go on my weekend trip!!!!

Thanks and kudos.

2010 Ford Escape

This is a nice hitch, planning on using it for a bike rack and a little come-behind trailer. My ordering experience was excellent: shortly after the initial order, I realized I needed to change something. Called and it was taken care of quickly and easily. Great customer service! It also shipped and arrived quickly.

Installation was also straightforward on my 2010 Escape. It took me slightly over an hour. You will want a second pair of hands to lift and hold while youre fitting the bolts if youre solo, Id suggest planning out your propping method because the hitch is fairly heavy.

The fish wires work very well. However, the bolt head would not fit through the access hole on my Escape. Once I realized I could put it through head-first and then it would reverse itself while in the shaft, it was good. Also I needed a 3/4 socket not 7/8 as the instructions said. But hey, its done and looks good. Cant wait to tow something!

Bolted right up as expected. I've had it for a year now and it's been flawless. Very happy. Combined it with the wiring harness and mount for connection and it looks factory but I did it in the driveway in under an hour. Would recommend to anyone.

2008 Ford Escape

This may be the third hitch I have ordered from etrailer, all have been easy to install. It might have been a bit easier to have four pull wires than the two provided, but it was an easy install regardless. It's on my wife's car to mount a bike rack to carry her new e-bike.

Etrailer.com was fantastic to deal with. Ordering was easy and fast. The order tracking provided was great and again easy. The product itself a drawtite hitch for my Ford Escape was as fast and easy with the information provided by etrailer. Took me less then 40 minutes for hitch and the wiring was about 50 minutes. Great job etrailer.com

This is not a product review as such. This is a "warning" to those who do a Google search of hitches to find the variety of businesses out there who sell hitches and such. I did one of those searches and, have found out that, when I clicked on "etrailer" (pricing sells me, I have experience with the product names), I was directed to a site that looks like the etrailer site, but when I searched for the product for my vehicle, I received a hitch for a different vehicle. Now, upon calling the etrailer folks and informing them of this "glitch" I am told that there are "problems" with Google!! Now, is Google getting the wrong information from etrailer regarding their product numbers? The order went through etrailer as if I had not done a search via Google. But, upon calling etrailer to resolve the matter and ordering the correct hitch, that, I was going to have to pay the shipping charges for the CORRECT hitch in the first place. Now, call me computer illiterate, but, I would think that this is a "glitch" that should be able to be fixed without too much trouble!! Other than that, The etrailer gal was very sweet and, I'm sure was responding to my dilemma as instructed. I just don't feel that this was a "glitch" in the system that I should be paying for to correct. Other than that, I will be ordering from etrailer again--but I'll go directly to their .com website next time.

The trailer hitch fit perfect and I had good results with the coil wire that put the bolts into the frame. The wiring kit was easy also.I would recommend these products for the Diyers with mechanical aptitude.John in Customer Service was very helpful in answering all my concerns and put my mind at ease with purchasing these products and these products were very inexpensive.

2008 Mazda Tribute

Tow bar seems solid and well built. Installed in 23 minutes on Tribute and several minutes of that were looking for deep socket. Wiring kit installed in just over an hour just like video and most of that time was spent attaching battery wire to undercarriage. Whole unit solid and lights very bright. Could not be happier, especially since local installer quoted me $426 and it took me less than 90 minutes for under $xxx parts and I kept the $170/hour labor!

  • Should 2009 Ford Escape Install Transmission Cooler When Towing Small Trailers
A transmission cooler is a great addition to basically any vehicle but is especially beneficial to vehicles that will be towing like your 2009 Ford Escape. For how much transmissions cost to repair/replace a cooler like the part # D13503 is a great insurance policy that allows you to get much more life from it. It's not a total necessity, but it really is a great idea.
