Trailer Hitch Receiver Adapter - 1-1/4 to 2 for a 2010 escape

Question:

I have a 1.25 hitch/receiver attached to my car. I need it to be 2 inches so I can buy a good bike rack for my ebike that weights 73 lbs. Do you sell an adapter that can make the thing on my car bigger so I can buy a 2 inch bike rack?

There are adapters available to increase a 1-1/4" to 2" hitch, the Curt Adapter - 1-1/4" to 2" - 6", # C45785. This adapter turns your 1-1/4" trailer hitch receiver into a 2" receiver so that you can mount a bike rack, cargo carrier or other 2" hitch accessory. Using this adapter will however reduce your hitch's weight capacity by 50 percent.

Please verify the specs for your current hitch. If for example you have the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Receiver (our lowest weight rated for example) 1-1/4" # 36501, this has a TW of 300 lbs. reduced to 150. The Hollywood Racks Sport Rider SE Bike Rack for 2 Electric Bikes - 2" Hitches, # HLY84FR, is is approximately 60 lbs., this would provide you the abilty to carry one e-bike at 73 lbs..

Another option of course is to remove and replace your current hitch with a Class III, 2" hitch such as the etrailer Trailer Hitch Receiver, # e56AR. This is a very cost effective custom fit hitch for the 2010 Ford Escape that has a 350 tongue weight. That will eliminate all concerns of weight specs for bike rack and multiple e-bikes. Please note the attached installation instructions. The installation difficulty for this is rated only 4 out of 10 and 40 mins time.
