Well packaged by etrailer (see photo).
It
took me around 90 minutes to install this (instead of 40 minutes as per manual), and this was on a mazda 6. And 30 minutes of that was to undo a mistake of using the wrong hole for the fish wire on one side. Please pay attention to the diagram, the same access hole has to be used for fish wiring both the bolts on each side.
The second most challenging part was raising the hitch to the right height. Luckily I had some wood shelves lying around that I was able to use in combination with the cardboard shipping box. I also had to make a trip to harbor frieight tools to buy a $24 torque wrench, but alas I could not figure out how to get the bolts torqued to spec, I wasn't too worried about that as I am only using this for an occasional bike rack. I will try torquing the bolts again soon, I just wasn’t able to get enough leverage when I last tried it, probably because I needed a shorter extension.
Overall I wouldn’t mind doing this again.

Good ole Harbor Freight always comin' in hot. My husband is like a kid in a candy store when it comes to that place. Gotta be careful when it comes to some items there though, I believe he got his torque wrench from their as well, so it should work well for your hitch. You will need to torque all of the 1/2-13 fasteners to the recommended specs in the manual. I do know that sometimes, it can be difficult to properly use the torque wrench; depending on strength and/or space. I think it may be best to see if you can ask a neighbor or family member to assist you. If you are needing some more information on how to use the torque wrench, let me know and I am more than happy to further assist you.

Trailer was easy to install and has worked great for our bike rack

Fantastic and easy installation

Surprised at the ease of the install. I got nervous seeing where it had to be installed with the muffler in the position it was in. My son and I had it installed in 15 minutes. Written instructions were great along with the video.

Wow! This trailer hitch fits like a glove and was so easy to install. I bought a Hidden Hitch 12 years ago for my 2006 Mazda 6, and while it served me well, the installation was much more involved and required drilling. I traded in the 2006 for a 2016 Mazda 6, and I was able to install the Curt Trailer Hitch by myself on the garage floor in about 20 minutes with only the provided fish wires and a 3/4" deep well socket on a breaker bar with a 6" extension. On the black body, you can hardly tell it's there, and as you can see, it readily accomodates my Saris bike rack that I had used with my previous hitch. I unconditionally recommend this trailer hitch.

Its an excellent product, and the accompanying wiring harness was a breeze, with the only tricky part being the battery connection. I decided to snake the red lead from the trunk to the battery through the interior of the car. The rocker panels were easy to remove, then I only needed to drill a small hole in the firewall to get the wire to the engine compartment. I mostly use the hitch for my bike rack, but I needed to transport a gas generator, and borrowed a friends utility trailer, which hooked up to the wiring harness no problem.

by:

The install was very easy, everything you need is included and after 1 year? Flawless finish, it still looks brand new and works as expected, also etrailer.com had the best price around so you just can't go wrong!

by:

Fairly easy installation. Very snug fit, a good thing. The bolt holes in the Mazda6 frame are asymmetric (square and round holes on one side don't match with the same pair on the other side) , which I did not notice until after I installed the driver side incorrectly. It took a little bit of maneuvering to correct using the correct holes and the fish wire (genius, BTW) but really not a big problem. Ended up in two round holes on one side, and a round and square hole on the other. Measure them first and it will work out fine. It's been a year so I may have that backwards as to sides and hole types.
I did the install in my garage without a lift or jack-stand. Just enough room for me to get it done by myself.
The hitch is great and the price is right. I tried to re-tighten after using it a few times for hauling bikes several hundred miles, but the bolts were solidly tight so no issue there.
I couldn't be more pleased. Oh, and I am 75 and if I could do it by myself then younger folks with good eyes and clear heads should manage just fine.

2016 Pontiac Trans Sport Van

I came within hours of ordering a roof rack for my new 2016 Mazda 6. I had used one for over 10 years on 3 different Mazda's in the past and although the transport was bombproof there was a lot going on up there, towers, crossbars, faring, bike trays and excessive wind noise, although i realize that the cross bars are now more aero designed. My bike shop recommended a Curt Trailer Hitch and then attaching a tray carrier to that. I did some research and decided to go this route. I ordered the Curt Hitch on a Tuesday and it was on my car by Friday of the same week and I have been carrying my bike with the carrier tray I attached ever since. This option worked out for me very well, i am very pleased. etrailer was very helpful and the install was pretty basic with no issues.

2017 Mazda 6

I just installed this hitch receiver on my 2017 Mazda 6 grand touring and it went just as smooth as the video shows. My local trailer company wanted $400 to purchase and install a hitch receiver (also without wiring) so by buying it direct at about $180 I saved a bunch by DIYing it. I dint need a light kit because it’s only used for a ebike rack. I did have my wife hold up one side while I bolted the other, so having that 2nd pair of hands helped. It took about 20 minutes. I would highly recommended this receiver to others.

2017 Mazda 6

Installed on a 2017.5 Mazda 6 in under 30 minutes. Instructional video was very helpful. Fish wire method to install the bolts worked great. Since I was working alone I propped up one end of the hitch on top of a paint can while installing the nuts on the other side. Used a 3/4" deep socket and 6" extension on my torque wrench. The torque spec is 110 lb-ft which is much more than I would have done if just tightening by feel.

Hitch seems rock solid. Will be using a Kuat Sherpa 2.0 bike rack with the hitch.

Mazda 6

The Curt hitch was very easy to install. It took about 20 minutes, and as a previous reviewer noted, the car doesn't need to be raised to install the hitch. The hitch is barely noticeable and works well with the old Swagman XC2.

by:

Excellent quality. The fish wire worked very well, however, I needed an additional wire to reach in the bolt hole and grab the fish wire. I made one from a solid conductor wire with a hook in the end. The box was damaged a bit in shipping and the tight hitch to box fit caused some of the paint to be removed. Not a big deal, but could be prevented with better packaging. Good value overall and easy installation for someone with basic tool skills and a torque wrench.

2014 Mazda 6

Just installed this hitch receiver on my 2014 Mazda 6 without any problems. My first time installing a receiver. Took about 45 minutes taking my time and chatting with a buddy. Hitch build quality is good. Holes lined up on the frame rails perfectly. All parts were included in the package, and instructions were pretty good.

I do feel like the receiver is a bit exposed and could probably be tucked in a bit tighter into the vehicle (but we're talking 1/2" here at most). That said, the receiver is NOT the lowest point on the underside of the car so I don't expect any significant impact on MPG from wind drag, if any at all.

Tip for DIY installers: You use fishwire to get 4 spacers/bolts into the frame and aligned in their respective holes. On each frame rail (left and right), there are 4 holes, all of which are shown in the instructions. 2 middle holes are clearly for the bolts, and I assumed the other 2 were the access holes for fishwiring the spacers/bolts into place (i.e. one nearest each bolt hole). This is NOT the case. You only use 3 holes total: 2 middle for the bolts, and only the rear-most (towards rear of vehicle) hole is used as the access hole for BOTH bolts. The front-most hole is not used at all in the process. The spacer will fit through the front hole but not the bolt. This cost me about 10 minutes on the install because it's virtually impossible to remove the spacer once in place. I got everything sorted out in the end but just wanted to mention that as it's not explicitly clear from the instructions (well, it wasn't to me).

If I can figure out how to upload some photos I'll do so later.

Per the Owners Manual, the 2014 Mazda 6 should not be used to tow any trailer.

I was extremely satisfied with the service and delivery of my order, unfortunately the hitch did not come close to matching the existing mounting holes for my car, I needed to put a large bar clamp on the hitch to bend it in approximately 3/4” I order to mount it.
