Thank you for your interest in my BMW Hitch installation. The hardest part was determining how to remove the plastic lower fascia on the car. As for the hitch itself, assembly was quite easy. In fact, if the hitch came with two way tape, the alignment and assembly would have been spot on. I recently purchased the trailer to transport my two bikes or lawn tractors.

The hitch receiver does rattle due to excessive clearance when towing the trailer empty, but does quiet down when weight is added to the trailer. My BMW is a 328 and has good power.

This kit came complete and it was a breeze to install. After watching the video online, I had mine installed in less than an hour. I could have done faster if the neighbor didn't come over to talk to me.
One suggestion is to add extension bar to the bottom bracket to reinforce it more, but only if you need more tongue strength. Great product.

It was fantastic, I was very happy when I found the DIY video that shows how easy it is to install myself. Thank you. I needed the hitch to pull a light trailer and small aluminum boat.

by:

Very high quality steel and welding and hardware. Installed very easily just exactly as it was supposed to it fit like a glove. I’m extremely happy with it, and the price was fair.

by:

Easy to install. Kinda skeptical about it mounting to the spare tire well but time will tell.

1998 BMW M3

I purchased this hitch and had my mechanic install it on my E36 M3 (it's 1998 4-door.)

As noted in the instructions that come with the hitch, the mechanic did have to cut a little plastic out of the rear panel that's under the bumper in order to install it. The area that needed cuttring is underneath the car and not visible once the hitch is installed.

The hitch does not pose any ground clearance issues (which was my main concern as my M3 is already very low.) The hitch doesn't hang any lower than the stock muffler already does.

The hitch arrived in good condition with all necessary parts needed for installation. Just as a heads up, this kit doesn't come with a wiring kit for brake lights; in my case, this was perfectly fine since I'm using the hitch for a bike rack and don't intend to tow a trailer with brake lights.

The hitch arrived quickly; it was delivered much earlier than expected.

Overall, it's a great hitch. It looks good, is small, unobtrusive, and gets the job done. A+

1997 BMW 3 Series

We purchased the hitch for our 1997 BMW 3 series to transport our bicycles on a bike rack.. The hitch arrived complete with all parts and also all bolts and nuts needed. It installed without problems. The hitch clears the bumper and trim on the car.
I did need to remove a piece of trim on the bumper (easy) during installation and put it back when done.
I took a bunch of pictures and will send a second email with them attached.

Well I am happy to say that my trailer hitch has worked perfectly. It has allowed me to take my bike to the beach boardwalk after work on the back of my BMW 323ic convertible. It has really been a blessing to me and I want to thank the amazingly talented experts at etrailer for the amazing design and easy installation.

  • Trailer Hitch that Fits 1999 BMW 328 Convertible
The Curt hitch # C11177 is a confirmed fit for your 1999 328 convertible and would do a great job to carry a bike rack like our very popular Hollywood Racks Trail Rider # HR200Z.

  • Trailer Hitch Fit for 1997 BMW 328i Convertible
Curt confirms that their Class I # C11177 hitch is a fit for all models of the 1997 BMW 328i, including the convertible. If you don't already have a bike rack in mind, the Thule Hitching Post Pro - Folding Tilting 4 Bike Rack w Anti-Sway - 1-1/4" and 2" Hitches Item # TH934XTR would be a great choice. Even though it is a 4 -bike carrier, it would only allow you to transport 2 bikes weighing up to 35 lbs apiece since you have a Class I hitch. I've linked to an install video for the hitch...

  • Trailer Wiring Recommendation for a 1997 BMW 3 Series (E36)
I recommend installing the Curt Powered Tail Light Converter # C59236 with the Curt Class I Hitch Receiver # C11177 on your 1997 BMW 3 Series (E36) as it has the newer module that's better protection for the vehicle and the trailer. In addition to all of this you'll need a ball mount setup with the appropriate rise/drop to tow a trailer. I'm linking a helpful article on ball mounts for you to check out and make sure you get the right one for your application.

  • Class I Trailer Hitch and Towing Accessories for 1999 BMW 323i Convertible
According to my contacts at Curt Manufacturing, the Class I receiver you referenced, part # 11177 is a fit for your 1999 BMW 323i Convertible. The install procedure and capacities are outlined in the install instructions, which you can see by clicking on the provided link. The install and capacities are the same as the M3 2-door coupe. • Will Curt Hitch Fit 1997 BMW 318ti
Yes, the Curt # C11177 is the correct hitch for your 1997 BMW 318 ti. This fits all models of the 1997 3 series. It has a bolt-on installation and drilling will be required. No other modifications are necessary. I attached an installation video below for your reference.

  • Will Thule TH65JV 2-Bike Platform Type Trunk-Mount Bike Carrier Fit 1997 BMW 328 Convertible
The Thule OutWay Platform-Style 2 Bike Carrier, part # TH65JV, will fit on your 328 convertible since it mounts to the bumper and trunk in the same way as hanging type carriers. However, the weight of this very sturdy carrier (about 28 lbs) plus that of the two loaded bikes (up to 33 lbs per bike) makes for a significant load on the rear bumper cover and trunk of your 328 convertible. I suggest instead a hanging-type trunk-mount carrier that weighs substantially less than the OutWay platform....

  • Trailer Hitch And Bike Carrier Recommendation For 1999 BMW 323is Coupe
The trailer hitch that is designed for your 1999 BMW 323is Coupe is the Curt Hitch, part # C11177. This is a Class l hitch and it has a 1-1/4 inch receiver opening. A technical note from Curt states that all non-trailer loads - bike racks, cargo carriers and so forth - should be supported with stabilizing straps like part # 18050 Failure to properly support these loads will void your hitch warranty from Curt. I have attached a link to an installation video for this hitch you can check...

  • Trailer Hitch Recommendation that Fits 1994 BMW 325i Convertible
We have the Curt hitch part # C11177 that is a confirmed fit for your 1994 BMW 325i convertible and would have enough capacity for the trailer weights you mentioned as it has a capacity of 2,000 lbs. Only BMW will be able to tell you if your vehicle is rated for towing though. I wish we could give you an exact hitch height figure for this but we do not have that dimension. For a ball mount then you'd want the part # C45521 which has a rise of 3-1/4 inches, hitch ball # A-82 for a 2 inch...

  • Trailer Hitch and Wiring Harness Recommendation for 1999 BMW 3-Series
Curt offers two different hitches for the 1999 BMW 3-series. For the Sedan, use # C11174. If you have the convertible or the coupe, you'd use # C11177. For a ball mount, use # C45521 and a # PC2 hitch pin. For a trailer ball, use # A-80 for a 1-7/8 inch or # A-82 for a 2 inch ball. You'll also need a trailer wiring harness like part # C59496. The 1-1/4 inch refers to the dimensions of the receiver tube that the ball mount inserts into. While the 1-7/8 inch dimension refers to the...
