Video Transcript for Bulldog Adjustable Coupler Lock Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at Bulldog Adjustable Coupler Lock part number, BD580410. This coupler lock offers us six different positions when it comes to locking our coupler in place. The first one allows us about 2-7/8" worth of room. Each click is a different position, all the way down to about 3/4". It has a covered lock tumbler, prevents the dirt, rust and dust from getting in there and we've got two keys that have a nice coated finish to them. The lock itself also has a coating around it. You've got a silver side and then just a circle.

The silver side is the one you want facing your coupler lock as you put it in. Just going to slide it in and adjust it to the narrowest position. Being able to lock it in so many ways really eliminates the ability to get a large enough tool in there to do any damage and our rotating lock face is going to help to resist that prying. Once we get our coupler locked up that's really all there is to it. We can know we can either store our trailer safely or leave it hooked to the truck without it disappearing. That will complete today's look at the Bulldog Adjustable Coupler Lock, part number BD580410.

It's not bad it's an inexpensive way to keep the honest honest and keep your lock lubricated they work well

by:

The first time I used this it seemed like it would be a good adjunct lock or quick lock if I was going to be away from the trailer for a bit. Unfortunately that didn’t work out. I locked it no problem. When I went to unlock it later, I inserted the key and turned. It felt stuck, I jiggled it a bit and turned again with two fingers. It seemed like it was turning easily but then the key snapped of leaving most of the key in the lock and unable to be removed rendering it useless. Fortunately the lock shaft is only marginally stronger than the key. I was able to easily cut through it with a hacksaw blade that I removed from the handle, bypassing the locks chief security feature, in just under 2 minutes.

by:

The lock is well made and works as described. I gave it 3 stars vs 5 due to the lock not closing tight on the latch because the locks circumference is wide enough to hit the coupler. This leaves plenty of room for a bolt cutter to get a grip.

by:

Works well with the Bull heavy duty coupler. The width locking is adjustable so it pulls up tight to the over width of the Bull Coupler.

The Bull coupler lock is still working well and I havent found a better lock.

by:

I bought this thinking that this would be more of an obstacle than others because you squeeze it up to the tongue latch so that there is no way to get a hacksaw in the gap. Unfortunately the manufacturer's 6 tongue latch widths don't match mine. I'm on the last narrowist width but not quite, so I have to go to the next narrowist which leaves a decent gap for sawing it off. I push it together so that it looks flush (no gap) but it eventually wiggles open to the actual lock position. I've squeezed the latch as much as I dare for good operation and I'm so close - - but no cigar. Oh well, wished they had put more notch positions. The unused length looks easy to cut off so that you don't stick your leg with it.

adjustable coupler lock for Bulldog hitch tounge :
prevents collar from sliding back, preventing take trailer off ball; or, putting on a ball. Simple solution.
etrailer.com provided excellent service and value.

by:

Lock shaft diameter smaller than I anticipated.
Item does have a sliding cover over lock face to keep moisture and debris out.
Used for hitch lock on Kwik Load car trailer.

by:

I've got a trailer coupler on my trailer that no other lock type will fit on. This is working fine right out of the box. Question will be how long it takes to rust. If its made right, it might not.

by:

Bull Dog brand so you can't go wrong - a step above just a pin - BD580410 might be better adjustment wise against my Bull Dog coupler. Also use a coupler lock like Master ML389DAT.

  • Recommended Trailer Coupler Locks That Can Be Keyed Alike
I have another option for you, but the Bulldog Adjustable Coupler Lock # BD580410 you were looking at can not be ordered keyed alike. Instead I recommend going with the etrailer Surge Brake Coupler Lock - 3-3/8" Span - 1/4" Diameter - Chrome # e98888 which will work with nearly all of the trailer couplers available, and can be keyed alike so you do not have to worry about keeping track of 4 different keys. You will just need to order all 4 at one time, and select the keyed alike option...

  • Recommended Lock for 2 Inch Lipless Cast Coupler While Towing and Unhooked
For a lock for your lipless cast coupler I recommend the Blaylock EZ Lock Trailer Coupler Lock for 1-7/8", 2", and 2-5/16" Couplers - Aluminum # BLTL-33-40D. This lock has 3 pin hole positions for a tight fit on a variety of couplers and uses a stainless steel padlock with a hardened steel shackle to secure the pin in place. The aluminum construction will help resist wear and corrosion. If you would prefer a high-end lock that is specifically made for couplers without a lip, we also have...

If you are looking for just the pin portion of coupler lock # BD580410 I am afraid that it is not available by itself. If you need an actual adjustable coupler then there are several Bulldog adjustable couplers available. We have the following and maybe you can identify the one you need: # BDA256C0317 (14k, 2-5/16 inch ball) # BDA200C0317 (8k, 2 inch ball) # BD028390 (7k, 2 inch ball) # BD028657 (15k, 2-5/16 inch ball) The first two have a wedge latch. • Coupler Latch Lock for a Coupler Latch that is 2-3/4 inches Wide
I went out to the warehouse and pulled Bulldog coupler lock # BD580409. When locked the pin span is 3-5/8 inches. That is probably more pin exposed than you want. Coupler lock # BD580410 has a usable span of 9/16 to 2-3/4 inches so it would be a better option for you. We also have several Bolt brand keys that you could key to match your vehicle key and that have a span range that would work for you. I have included a link to them to the right.

  • Couple Lock Recommendation that Can be Keyed Alike
I have a solution for you, but the Bulldog Coupler Lock part # BD580410 that you referenced can not be keyed alike. For a similar lock that can be keyed alike you would want our etrailer.com lock part # e98886. The usable span of this lock is 2 inches. For one with a 7/8 inch span you would want the # e98889. Or for 2-1/2 inches, part # e98887.

  • Trailer Coupler Latch Lock for a 2-1/2 Inch Wide Latch
Our etrailer.com coupler lock # e98887 is designed to work on a coupler width up to 2-1/2 inches. Since that is what you have on your coupler, this lock will fit and it will be a nice snug fit, which is by design. For a second option I recommend the Bulldog adjustable coupler lock # BD580410. It has a useable span of 3/4 of an inch up to 2-7/8 inches which will allow for a little more wiggle room if that is something you want. I have included links to videos on both locks for you.

To lock a cast head 2-5/16-inch coupler while it is hitched you will need a coupler latch lock like part # BD580410. This lock has a 1/4-inch diameter pin that adjusts for latch widths from 9/16-inch up to 2-3/4-inches. All coupler latch locks are shown on the linked page.

  • Replacement Keys for Adjustable Trailer Coupler Latch Lock
Unfortunately, Bulldog doesn't offer replacement keys, but we can set you up with locks and spare keys. Your best bet for replacement keys, or if you want a lock that you can have multiple keys for would be to go with the etrailer Adjustable Trailer Coupler Latch Lock, part # e98883. • Availability of Spindle Pin and Clip Replacement for the Pro Series Adjustable 3-Ball Mount
The spindle pin and clip for the Pro Series Adjustable 3-Ball Mount for 2" Hitches # 63070 has a 3/8" diameter and while there aren't any replacements, when I reached out to my contact at Pro Series he mentioned that you can use a standard 3/8" pin to replace this one instead of purchasing a new platform # PS63075. The closest thing we have that would fit is the Bulldog Adjustable Coupler Lock # BD580410 but it uses a 1/4" diameter pin so it won't fit as snug in that spindle pin location.

  • Recommended Coupler Lock for Bulldog Cast Head Coupler
Thanks for the photo of your coupler! It looks like it is a Bulldog Cast Head Coupler with Wedge Latch, 2-5/16 inch Ball # BDA256C0317. I spoke with my contact at Bulldog about a coupler lock for your trailer. He said that because of the shape of the # BDA256C0317 coupler, a lock that secures inside the coupler where the ball fits is not ideal. He suggested using a traditional coupler lock that secures the coupler at the latch. I really like the Bulldog Adjustable Coupler Lock # BD580410....
