Video Transcript for Reese Tow and Store Lock Kit Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at Reese's tow and store lock kit. Part number RP7104700. This is what you'll receive in your kit: you'll get your coupler lock, your latch lock, two hitch pins, one 5/8ths inch, one 1/2 inch, and a lock that will fit either of the hitch pins. You'll also get three keys that will work with any of these, 'cause they're all keyed a like. Here we've got our coupler lock installed. This is going to work with 1 7/8ths inch, 2 inch, and 2 5/16ths inch couplers. Now, some of our customers have noted that it is a little loose.

However, there's no way to get this thing off. You can't lift up your tongue to release it. You can't pull it off. You can't slide it off or twist it in any way. This is because of its universal fit.

Depending on your coupler, it may fit more snug than this one. However, there is no way to get it off. This will prevent any unauthorized hookups to your trailer, 'cause there is no way for them to get hooked on here, 'cause the lock keeps them out. This is particularly useful for people like me who leave their trailer outside on a regular basis. Many customers on our website compare it to Curt's trailer hitch receiver and coupler lock set. And while the Curt's does have a cleaner appearance, it will only work on tongues that have a flange, where our Reese will wrap around the tongue, so the Reese will likely fit with more types of trailers than with the flange only style that the Curt provides.

Additionally, the Reese comes with a 5/8ths and 1/2 inch lock pin, while the Curt only comes with a 5/8ths inch lock pin. This coupler's a great example of when the Curt wouldn't work with because our flange is rolled upwards so the Curt wouldn't be able to slide over it, while our Curt would work with the coupler like this with the smooth flange, while our Reese will work with either style. Our customer Fred R. Had to say, "Wonderful kit to secure your trailer. Provides everything to keep the bad guys from taking your stuff. Keyed a like makes it easy to use so you actually use it. I have a few of these from multiple trailers and they are durable and trouble free."The ball portion of our coupler is made of aluminum, while the locking U-bolt is made of steel.

It's easy to install. You simply slide the ball up into your coupler, you latch it down, take the locking mechanism here on the top, and slide it down into the holes. You want to make sure you have the grooved edge on the lock side. Just push it into place. And then just get it as tight as you can. Check to make sure it won't come off. And you're nice and secure. The span on your U-bolt for your coupler is going to measure 3 and 7/8ths inches from inside-to-inside edge. The distance between the lock and the brass portion is going to be a half inch, so you can slide over anything that's got a half-inch width. The latch and trigger lock can work when you're both coupled and uncoupled from your vehicle. If you're coupled up, this will prevent your trailer from being uncoupled and taking whenever you're hauling it out. And if you're uncoupled, this will keep it safe while it's sitting at home. This works by preventing people from opening the latch and being able to hook it up to their ball mount. It's a brass and steel lock with a 5/8ths inch to one inch span. You'll want to keep that in mind when deciding if it's going to fit your trailer. And to keep any of your accessories safe, you get a 5/8ths inch and a half inch hitch pin. We're using our 5/8ths here and our lock on the end to ensure that the pin can't be pulled so you can keep your trailer and your accessories safe. The end has a dust cover to keep out any dirt and debris to ensure a long-lasting smooth operation of the lock. It's all-steel construction in both the hitch pin and the lock mechanism and the bend on one side of the pin makes it easy to insert and remove your pin. It's easy to lock. You simply slide it on and push in the center button. That completes our look at Reese's tow and store lock kit. Part number RP7014700.

Reese Tow and Store Lock Kit - RP7014700

Average Customer Rating:  4.6 out of 5 stars   (99 Customer Reviews)

Just installed the Reese anti-theft device on my travel trailer. My trailer has a 2-5/16 size ball receiver and the flange width is right at 4”. The u-shaped hasp just barely fit the width of the flange, and when clasped the device is at a very slight angle. But it’s solid and secured. I can now sleep easier at night knowing my trailer is secured in my driveway. The lockable hitch pins (2) and lock for the trailer release lever with matching key locks Is awesome.

After a year the product is holding up well. I still would recommend getting this item for peace of mind while the trailer is not in use.

by:

The hitch lock is a 5 star fir sure and fit 5 star. Great economical lock.
The pin lock is also a first class lock.
The actual clasp lock shank was too big for the hole. My observation....our hole is toooooooo small and almost useless unless I drill it out for a decent size lock.

After a year, this lock system is working 100 great for me.

by:

Not happy at all!! Paid $[XX] and found the same kit on [online vendor] for $[XX]! The coupler pin lock does not even fit my car hauler.

by:

This trailer security set is just what I was looking for: one key for all three. I won't do without this convenience anymore, just one key for the door padlocks, and one key for the trailer's security. Easy Pezee.

This set is well-made, good appearance, it fits nicely under my truck's back seat. It would be really nice if a carry-case was included.

My 1997 trailer uses a 2 5/16" towing ball. I had to grind the edges of the trailer's ball receiver just a little on each side to accept the large "U-bolt" that fastens the yellow hitch block to the trailer. No big deal.

by:

Brass coupler lock and latch pin work as advertised no issues.

The bent pin receiver lock would not initially release. After trying to free it up with spray on lithium grease and lubricant it finally released. Very sticky... I am not sure if I would trust it in terms of lock term use. I did not return the product as the box was destroyed. Not sure if the product I received was returned for the sticky lock issue as the box was torn up and repaired with tape.

by:

Not the highest quality locks I’ve ever seen, but perfectly functional, keyed the same, and serves its purpose to secure the trailer.

by:

Seems ok, but I purchased the wrong type of hitch lock for my particular hitch shape and didn't realize it until too late. Be sure you're getting one that will fit your hitch.

by:

Lock was exactly what I needed for my trailer. Very happy tjat I bought this.

by:

I bought this lock for my new boat trailer but the hasp won’t fit over the surge brake gizmo and the pad lock also won’t fit through the safety lever hole. I’m still looking for some other way to lock up the new boat because the brake rotors prevent me from running a cable through the wheels. I have installed the lock on my other boat trailer which has a standard hitch and both locks fit on that one. In that case it’s a nice upgrade to the basic padlock I’ve been using which probably would only last 30 seconds against a bolt cutter and the bigger hasp over the ball definitely would be hard to remove.

Well I did finally figure out that if I turned it around it would fit on both trailers although a bit loosely but still an upgrade over the a padlock on the top hasp. I havent tried the other smaller lock only because I already owned a lock for the receiver. I would buy this lock again.

by:

These don't appear to be the highest quality locks, but they do the trick. We don't use the pin because we already have a locking, quiet pin setup.
The padlock is a good size but doesn't close smoothly. It does close once you hold it in a certain position, though, and because the key matches the ball adapter lock, it's great.
We purchased a wheel lock to supplement these locks, so we wouldn't have to rely solely on them if we were really concerned, but they are great for a bit of theft discouragement in most situations - and the keys match (which is really why I selected them in the first place).

They are still functioning well, and get used all of the time.

by:

Fits my Load Rite trailer very well. As others have noted, ball lock is somewhat loose but in no way will it come off. I like that the kit includes a locking pin for the trailer hitch.

Anthony M.

After one year lock continues to work well without any problems.

by:

Be very careful to measure your hitch width and compare it to the net inside measurement of this ball receiver lock. Mine is about 1/8” too wide making this lock difficult to use. Also, having a toothed key means you will be fumbling around in the sometimes dark and wet conditions when this lock needs to be used trying to insert the key the wrong way.

by:

Great value and nice to have everything in a kit

by:

I wanted to say I am very happy with the trailer lock purchased from you. There may be more secure locks than the one I bought but any lock in my opinion is better than none, This one would take quite a lot of work to remove which gives me more security from theft.

Lock is working fine, in use always. My wife takes lock on and off and if she didnt like it I would soon know. Quality product, yes.

by:

my trailer coupling has a flange around the outside. the store lock just fits with some jockeying and correct positioning.

Good set of locks. They do the job

by:

very good product easy to install thank you very much and I recommend this product by the way the service is very good thank you

by:

Solid lock kit. I use the ball lock year round and with a bit of bearing grease, it has held up well. I use the 5/8 pin lock every other month or so and with occasional silicone lubrication, the key tumbler stays smooth.

by:

Great experience and always helpful.

by:

It's difficult to assess lock quality from pictures. Often you get what you pay for, and in my case i needed more of a simple deterrent as opposed to a Fort Knox approach. This meets my needs.

In my case, i like that you get a coupler release lock, the yellow ball lock, and a pair of locking receiver pins all in one. The option for a single key is also appreciated.

If you need something with extreme grinder resistance, this is probably not your kit. But is definitely a big step up from just a padlock on the coupler.

by:

Like this website, always find what you need plus fast delivery. These locks fit our bumper pull " TrailsWest " horse trailer plus reciever hitch on truck nicely. Never had problems with theft but with times being hard with this virus thing you never know.

by:

Quick delivery, as always. Quality is very, very, good; all connections are nice and solid.

Ball-coupler lock and receiver lock work fine, only the latch-lock doesn't. Our trailer has a "Knott" latch, and there aren't any locations where the latch-lock will fit. There is _one_ possible location, but it would require enlarging a hole, and I don't think there is sufficient metal to keep things working.

Let's Just Say, two out of three ain't bad at all.

by:

Good product for securing your trailer hitch. I have a yoke collar hitch on my camper, and this product fits better than my previous Masterlock hitch lock.

by:

Wonderful kit to secure your trailer. Provides everything to keep the "bad" guys from taking your stuff. Keyed alike makes it easy to use so that you actually use it! I have a few of these for my multiple trailers and they are durable and trouble free.

by:

This lock gives me peace of mind and since my trailer is still there proves it works

Moxie

7/28/2021

My trailer is still there so it is great.

by:

Worked great for my 24' enclosed case hauler with a 2 5/16" tongue.
It's a little right getting on properly, but I prefer this knowing my trailer is secure.

  • How To Operate the Bulldog CCP Trigger-Style Coupler Lock
It sounds like you might have the Bulldog Lifelong Trigger-Style Coupler Lock part # BD580404 and if that is the case then I have attached for a you a review video on how to operate the lock. That said, if the lock has been on for six years without being removed then odds are it is stuck and will be very hard to remove as rust can form and dirt can get inside over time which can then make for them to be very difficult to operate. If that is the case then you will need to either cut the...

  • Replacement Coupler Lock to Replace Reese Tow and Store Lock Kit
Replacement keys are no longer available from Reese so replacing the Reese Tow and Store Lock Kit part # RP7014700 is the best and only option I can offer. If you broke the key off inside the coupler lock, you may consider using a Fastway Universal Trailer Coupler Lock for 1-7/8", 2" and 2-5/16" Couplers part # FA86-0015-316 because Fastway does have a variation of key numbers for security and produces replacement keys if this ever happens again in the future.

I wish we could sell you just the u-shaped portion of the Reese Tow and Store Lock Kit part # RP7014700 but unfortunately, the manufacturer does not allow for this therefore you will need to replace the entire kit. The other option you have is the Master Lock Universal Trailer Coupler Lock part # 379DAT which although would mean that you will have to carry another set of keys, will be a more cost effective option than replacing the entire kit above.

The span of the hitch locks included with the Reese Tow and Store lock kit don't have a span long enough to work with a 3 inch receiver. However, you could piece together a kit that'd work for you. For the receiver lock, I'd recommend the Draw-Tite # BD580412 which offers a 4 inch span and uses a high security key. For the coupler lock, use # FA86-0015-318 and for the coupler latch lock, use # 605DAT. ..
