Aerodynamic Cargo Box with Carbonite Texture
Cargo boxes, bags, and baskets are great for transporting gear on your vehicle's roof. A cargo box has the added benefits of an aerodynamic shape that reduces drag and wind noise, a hard shell to protect your gear, and a higher degree of weather resistance. And you can latch and lock a cargo box for added protection against theft.
The SkyBox 18 has 18 cu ft of space for sports equipment or camping gear for up to 4 people. The aerodynamic, low-profile design and the dimpled lid with Carbonite texture help to reduce wind noise and drag. The box opens and latches from both sides and is designed to provide clearance when you open your rear hatch. Sliding clamps accommodate most crossbar styles and spreads so you can install the box in minutes without tools. The durable yet lightweight ABS plastic construction prevents warping, denting, or cracking.
Sturdy, Dual-Side-Opening Lid
The SkyBox lid opens from both sides. Whether you mount it closer to the driver's side or passenger's side of your car, this dual-side opening lets you easily access your cargo. If you are parked on a busy street, in a tight parking lot, or even next to a campground picnic table, you have the option of opening the lid from the side of the vehicle that works best for you.
Patented EndoSkel stiffeners act like ribs to make this lid 3 times stiffer than other Yakima cargo box lids. The fortified lid has an easy-access edge and spring-loaded hinges that allow for smooth, one-handed operation. The extra-stiff lid also helps reduce road noise and vibration, and it guards against dents and scratches when the box is in storage.
SuperLatch Security System
The SkyBox has SuperLatch security latches on both sides to ensure that the lid is completely closed. The SuperLatch prevents you from removing the key from the lock unless all 3 internal latches are engaged. That way, you are prevented from removing the key and driving off with an unlocked box. This security system also seals the box against dirt and moisture. Each SuperLatch includes an SKS lock core that can be swapped out to make all your Yakima gear keyed alike.
Universal Clamp-On Mounting Hardware
The SkyBox installs with mounting clamps that slide along tracks in the floor of the box. These clamps fit most crossbar styles, and they adjust for different crossbar spreads. To adjust a clamp, loosen both knobs and slide the clamp to the desired location. Then tighten both knobs and push the cam lever down to close the clamp around your crossbar.
Optimal Rear Hatch Clearance
The SkyBox has an undercut tail designed to prevent interference with your vehicle's rear hatch or trunk. This tail provides more space for your hatch to fully open when compared with boxes without the undercut tail.
Cargo Tie-Down Anchors
An integrated track system in the floor of the box provides tie-down points for securing your cargo. These anchor points work great with Yakima's SkyBox cargo net (Y07146 - sold separately).

I replaced an old Thule box with this. My opinion is that the locking mechanism, the clamping system, and the hinges are superior to the Thule's. Especially the locking mechanism. I used to have to wrestle the Thule box to get things lined up so that I could close and lock the box. And the bonus is that this box was less money (than an equivalent Thule) and eTrailer shipped it for free!

We have not yet taken the Skybox on a road trip so I can't talk about the box itself. But I can talk about the buying experience at etrailer. 5 stars!. There was a wealth of helpful information about the various choices for cargo carriers, including dimensions and clearance requirements, and I found the installation videos extremely valuable. Great personalized follow-up after the order was placed and after arrival. The Skybox arrived on time, well packed and in great shape.

Bought this to replace a Thule box >12 years old that had developed some cracks. The latch mechanisms on this seems a bit more robust, and it has the rear bevel to allow the tailgate to open. Attachment to the crossbars is straightforward and all the pieces remain attached to the box, which is convenient. Arrived in good condition via UPS freight.

Love our Skybox! It has made camping so much easier - it fits so much stuff super securely. With 2 kids it was a no brainer.
I admit it is slightly too long for my 2015 Subaru Outback, but it still works just fine as long as we remember to program the lift gate so it doesn’t open all the way. (Just gotta remember to duck!)
Very quiet too, if it wasn’t for the gas mileage, we wouldn’t even know we had it on our car.

I would give this 5 stars, but it wound up being *just* too long for my roof rack installation. It works, and I've put it through its paces with cross country trips, camping trips, beach trips and any time I need the extra space. It is about 3 inches too long to allow the rear hatch to open completely. That was my fault, but perhaps the total cubic feet could be made up in width and not length as it had ample clearance on those side.
It's a great product. I'm not complaining. I chose the size. I can't give it 5 stars because it's not "everything I wanted and more."

The dual locks can be tricky to engage, but it is very secure once they are latched. I love the internal tie-down points and the massive size, easily swallowed everything I needed for a family of 4 for vacation and then some. I dropped only 1 mpg with the box in place, not too shabby.

The mounting system/clamps are a little over designed. There are much simple and easier ways to do that.

One year later and four trips with this cargo pod. We've managed to stuff camping gear, ski equipment and other luggage into the pod. I really like how it can be opened from either side. Also, it ensures the pod is completely closed before the key is pulled out, providing an extra safeguard.

Used it a couple times now. Hold alot of stuff. I like the way is locks down to the roof rack. Rides super easy and does a nice job. Couple awareness items 1. It is big and bulky and two person job to get on roof. Nothing bad about it but just be aware 2- it opens from both sides which is great. Howerver it only opens 45 to 60 degrees and not a full 90 degrees. That makes it a bit cumbersome to put large object in it 3- Think in advance where you want to store it because it is big. 4-i don’t think the claim it totally waterproof so no big deal but during heavy rain during travel, water does find its way in box
