converter charger

This smart converter charger converts AC shore power into DC power and uses the Charge Wizard multistage charging system to charge your battery bank. If your RV already has a stock converter charger, it will need to be removed to ensure this unit operates properly.

Charge Wizard Operation

Using the built-in Charge Wizard, the converter charger automatically switches voltages while the battery bank charges. This accelerates the charge, but also helps extend battery life by adjusting the voltage during the different modes. This charger is compatible with flooded lead acid, AGM, and gel batteries.

Charging Modes

  1. Boost: This mode charges at the full rated load for a quicker recharge time. This is where most of the charging happens. It charges the battery up to 90% of the full capacity.
  2. Normal: This mode provides controlled voltage to ensure a full charge. Once the battery begins to reach capacity, the normal state will kick in and reduce the voltage to safely complete the charge.
  3. Storage: Once the battery reaches full charge and remains unused for 30 hours, this mode maintains a lower voltage to compensate for self-discharge. This reduces battery stress and minimizes gassing and water loss.
  4. Equalization: This mode activates to prevent stratification and sulfate buildup during extended storage cycles. These two issues can damage a battery by causing the accumulation of acid at the bottom of the battery and hardened sulfate crystals on the battery plates. This mode is especially helpful when your battery is going unused during storage.

Safety Features

cooling fan

The system includes a number of safety features. It has a reverse polarity protection that will protect the converter if the battery is hooked up incorrectly. Additionally, the unit includes protection for overvoltage, undervoltage, and overcurrent, which can damage your equipment, as well as the converter. It also has GFCI protection that shuts off power when there is a current imbalance. The built-in cooling fan also removes excess heat from the unit. The fan speed is proportional to the internal temperature on the converter, so when the power demand is low, the fan will operate quietly.

Converter Status Remote Pendant for Easy Monitoring and Control

converter status remote pendant

The included Converter Status Remote Pendant monitors the converter's charging status. It also allows you to manually override the charge process to verify the unit is operating properly. The pendant uses a flashing green LED to indicate what charging mode is active. It easily connects to the converter's accessory port with the attached cable.

How It Installs

The converter mounts horizontally inside your RV in a dry location with ventilation. However, as long as the unit has sufficient ventilation, it can also be mounted vertically. The mounting hardware is not included.

terminals and plug

The DC output terminals wire to the battery bank. The AC in cord plugs into a 120V 3-wire grounded source.

I ordered this part because it was less expensive than at the dealership hoping it would not be a faulty pc of equipment. I was extremely satisfied with the part, the price and the condition in which it arrived. Highly recommend Progressive Dynamics.

Very well, and a good price at that!

by:

It works like a champ! I had retired from the military and am living the full time RV life. My only regret was that it's a converter and not an inverter.

One day I'll make the jump to lithium.

We have only one regret... we neglected to purchase a Valtera electric waste valve through [online store] vs etrailer. We learned a big lesson! The valve was junk and we'll purchase from you, once savings accumulates.

by:

Great service....called company prior to ordering online to make sure we ordered the proper converter for our rv....the person on the phone was so friendly and helpful. Quick delivery also. Will definately use etrailer.com again for any future rv needs.

by:

I received my Progressive 9280 converter earlier that originally quoted, which was good. I installed it today and It seems to be working fine. I gave three stars because it came in an etrailer box with paper padding, but no Progressive box, or paperwork. For all I know this might have been someones return before. No way to really tell if it was indeed a new one.

by:

Adam was very helpful. Satisfied custom er.

by:

Our battery bank is HUGE! (14 batteries, over 900 Amp-hours!)
This keeps us fully charged and ready to roll on a moment's notice.

  • Batteries Not Charging, Do I Need to Replace the Converter?
I recommend you start by just replacing the fuses. If that fixes the problem, you are all set. If not, I recommend replacing the power converter with a new unit. I can recommend a similar model to replace your existing converter if you can find the model number on the unit. Otherwise, if you know the power consumption of all your devices, you can pick a new unit with enough power for everything. For example, if your power requirements come in under 1,080 watts, I recommend the Progressive...

  • Converter and Solar Panel Charger Setup for Trailer with Four AGM Batteries
The Progressive Dynamics Inteli-Power RV Converter and Smart Battery Charger # PD9280A that you referenced is compatible with AGM batteries so it would work well for you with the AGM batteries you plan to go with. No additional pig tail is needed. Then for a solar panel charger setup to trickle charge the batteries the Go Power Weekender ISW RV Solar Charging System # 34282183 would work great as well. It can provide a 1,500 watt charge and also is compatible with AGM batteries.

  • Recommended Replacement For An Inteli-Power PD9280 Converter Charger
Yes, the Progressive Dynamics Inteli-Power RV Converter and Smart Battery Charger # PD9280A would be an exact replacement for your PD9280 converter. If you weren't just going to replace it and were going to troubleshoot the issue I recommend checking the output of the converter. It could be that the internal Charge Wizard is bad and not correctly reading the charge of your battery and thus sending more power than necessary to charge your battery. To test the output of the converter you'll...

  • Does Progressive Dynamics Converter Remote Pendant Automatically Switch to Correct Mode
I took a look at the instruction manual of the Progressive Dynamics Inteli-Power RV Converter and Smart Battery Charger # PD9280A and when using the Converter Status Remote Pendant for Progressive Dynamics Inteli-Power PD9200 Series Converters # PD92201 the pendant will automatically switch to the appropriate mode. So you don't have to do anything at all, because it will eventually do go to the correct mode after a period of time and reading the RV battery voltage.

  • How to Charge Trailer Batteries with the Vehicle's Alternator and Shore Power
I do have options for you but the Redarc In-Vehicle BCDC Battery Charger part # 331-BCDC1240D would not accept AC current from shore power and then use that to charge your two AGM batteries while disconnected from the tow vehicle. The Redarc In-Vehicle BCDC Battery Charger would still be needed while driving but when parked you would need to install a power converter to charge the batteries using shore power. The correct power converter will vary depending on the A/h of your batteries...

  • What are Wire Gauge Requirements for Progressive Dynamics PD9200 Series Battery Converter
Hey Jean, so in the install instructions for the Progressive Dynamics converter part # PD9280A the wiring requirements are pretty interesting. For the chassis ground wire they recommend between 6 and 12 AWG. From battery ground to converter negative they recommend between 2 and 14 AWG, and the same for the battery positive and positive lug of the converter. So if you have the minimum thickness wire already you do not need to change anything.

  • What's More Important When Choosing A Converter, Watts Or Amps
The amperage is going to be the more important factor for a converter like the # PD9280A. We calculate energy for batteries in amp hours, so the higher amount of amps you can recharge in and hour the faster the battery will charge. That being said, batteries do have specifications on how much amperage they can actually accept so you'll want to verify that you battery can even take 80 amps per hour otherwise certain batteries will shut themselves off and not charge or you'd essentially be...

The fan on your Progressive Dynamics # PD9260C running more often than usual could mean a couple of things are going on here; and you're correct in thinking that most of them aren't a good sign. It sounds like you've cleaned out the vents on the converter as well as changed the fuses, but one of the telltale signs that your converter is going out is that it's overcharging your battery. I recommend checking the voltage on your batteries; they should be around 13.5v if the converter is still...

  • Should Transfer Switch be Replaced at Same Time as Upgraded Converter on RV
Hey Jean, so it really depends on the rating of your current transfer switch if you should replace it with the part # PD64FR at same time as when you install the converter part # PD9280A. The new converter is rated for up to 1,300 watts so your current transfer switch would need to be rated for at least that to get full advantage of the new converter. If not, then it would be a good idea also go with the new switch part # PD64FR which is rated for 2,000 watts.

  • Can An Adapter Be Used To Plug A Progressive Dynamics PD9280 Converter Into A 15 Amp Outlet
No, the Progressive Dynamics Inteli-Power RV Converter and Smart Battery Charger # PD9280A requires a dedicated 20 amp circuit. This means that you'll need a 20 amp circuit breaker in your panel that only powers the outlet that the converter plugs into, and the outlet will need to be rated for 20 amps as well. Using 15 amp rated components will cause a short and trip the outlet/breaker because the converter is going to pull more than 15 amps. This may mean that you'll need run a new outlet...
