CU850013 Come Up DV Series

The DV-12 Light lets you pull a stuck vehicle out of mud, snow, or water and up a steep incline. The winch is designed with a smaller motor and drum when compared with recovery winches that have similar line pulls. This allows you to install the winch on a vehicle with limited mounting space - such as a rock crawler or Jeep - without sacrificing pulling power. The power unit can be remotely mounted, and the clutch handle can be rotated so the winch fits easily into tight spaces. It has a sealed contactor, a clutch that shifts easily from free-spool to engaged, and a load-holding brake that prevents unintentional rope payout. It includes a waterproof, hand-held remote with 17' lead so you can operate it at a safe distance. It also has a built-in overheat sensor that triggers an audible alarm in the power unit if the motor exceeds 212 degrees.

Heavy-Duty, 4.6-Horsepower Motor

DV Series Motor

The DV-12 Light features a 4.6-horsepower, 12-volt DC motor with 12,000 lbs of line pull. This heavy-duty, series-wound motor is more powerful and more dependable than a permanent magnet motor, and it generates more torque and dispenses heat more efficiently when operating at high speeds. It's constructed of durable, corrosion-resistant materials including the die-cast aluminum housing, steel drum, carbon steel motor tube, copper battery terminals, and carbon- and stainless steel hardware.

Built-In Overheat Sensor

There is a built-in sensor located inside the motor housing that monitors the motor temperature. If the motor exceeds 212 degrees, an audible alarm in the power unit sounds and an LED on the remote glows red. The alarm will turn off when power to the winch has been shut down, and the LED will turn green when the motor has cooled and can be used again.

Power Unit with Sealed Contactor

DV Series Power Unit

The contactor - or solenoid - transmits power from the vehicle's battery to the winch motor. The 400-amp contactor - located inside the power unit - is sealed for submersion in water or mud. The copper terminals and stainless steel and carbon steel hardware are corrosion resistant, and the motor leads have rubber boots for water resistance. The cables are color coded and printed with the AWG for easy installation. For convenience - or to better fit in a tight space - the power unit can be removed and mounted remotely with an extended wiring kit (sold separately).

Free-Spooling Clutch with Rotating Handle

DV Series Free-Spooling Clutch with rotating ring gear

The DV-12 Light has a free-spool clutch with a rotating ring gear that enables you to pull out the rope by hand. This saves battery power, prevents the brake from wearing down prematurely, reduces wear on the motor, and is much faster than waiting for the drum to unroll the rope. To release the clutch for free-spooling simply pull and turn the spring-loaded handle. To reengage the clutch, lift and rotate the handle back to the position indicated by the icon on the label.

The clutch is driven by a hardened-steel, 3-stage planetary gear train. This provides more speed than traditional worm gear drives or 1- or 2-stage planetary gear trains.

The gearbox can be rotated in 36-degree increments so you can reposition the clutch handle to an easy-to-reach location. This is great when mounting foot-forward on custom and in-bumper applications or on a vehicle with a small engine where space is extremely limited.

The rustproof, die-cast aluminum gearbox is sealed to keep out moisture, and it has a gray powder coat finish for corrosion resistance.

Automatic, Load-Holding Cone Brake Structure

DV Series Cone Brake

The automatic CBS (Cone Brake Structure) holds 100 percent of the load without unintentional rope payout (or creep). It has a cone-shaped wheel that presses against the brake clamp when there is a load on the rope. The greater the load on the rope the harder the cone-shaped wheel presses against the clamp. This pressure creates enough friction to slow and ultimately stop the drum's rotation.

The cone brake is located on the outside of the drum so the heat created from friction is kept away from the motor and the rope. This prevents potentially damaging heat buildup near the motor.

Hand-Held Remote with LED

DV Series Hand-Held Remote

A hand-held remote with a 17' lead and In/Out rocker switch lets you control the winch from a safe distance. The remote is constructed of durable plastic, and it's sealed and waterproof so it won't get damaged in wet conditions. It has a built-in LED that turns green when you are powering the rope in or out, turns red to indicate an overheated motor, and turns off when the winch is inactive.

Remote plugged into power unit

There is a rubber-sealed plug on top of the power unit that houses the attachment port for the remote control. Simply plug the durable plastic remote into the power unit when you need to use it, and disconnect it to store it away when you aren't using it. The plug prevents water from getting into the unit when you are not using the wired remote.

There is also a wireless hand-held remote (sold separately) available that lets you operate the winch from up to 90' away.

Wire Rope

Come Up Wire Rope

The wire rope is made of high-strength, aircraft-grade galvanized steel that resists abrasions and is able to withstand harsh UV rays, chemicals, and extreme temperatures.

The rope winds around a solid steel drum. The mounting flanges are strong enough to resist bending or breaking if the rope wrap becomes uneven and excess stress is put on the drum.

A hand-saver strap is included to use in conjunction with work gloves (sold separately) so that you can safely handle the rope and hook. A rock bag (BD500549 - sold separately) is also recommended. The rock bag helps prevent a broken rope from snapping back by forcing it to the ground.

Clevis Hook

The removable clevis hook is made of high-strength forged steel that is heavy duty and rust resistant. It has a spring-loaded safety latch for quick fastening and removal. The hook attaches to the steel thimble on the end of the wire rope.

Roller Fairlead

Come Up Roller Fairlead

The roller fairlead has a thick steel frame with 4 steel rollers. The rollers reduce friction when you're pulling the rope in or paying it out, and they prevent the rope from becoming pinched when pulling at extreme angles. It has a black powder coat finish and zinc-plated rollers that are tough and corrosion resistant. The fairlead installs with the included steel hardware.

Note: The roller fairlead does not mount directly to the winch - it typically attaches to tabs on the winch mounting plate that bolts to your bumper (sold separately) or grille guard (sold separately). ComeUp mounting channels and most aftermarket mounts include these tabs.

Rugged Construction

DV Series Winch Body

The DV-12 Light is constructed of strong, durable materials that perform no matter the weather conditions or terrain. The motor and gearbox housing are constructed of heavy-duty yet lightweight die-cast aluminum. The contactor is sealed to keep water out, and the lightweight, plastic power unit is ideal for mounting in remote locations. The steel tie-bars and side frame drum supports help to create a strong and rigid winch body.

Installation

You will need a suitable mounting location to install the winch on the front of your vehicle. Winch mounts are built into many aftermarket bumpers and grille guards. Alternatively, you can install a universal front-mount plate (sold separately) to create a mounting point for both your winch and fairlead.

Seal Gen2 Winch Body

Note: This winch can only be installed foot-forward.

Use the included wiring to connect the winch to your vehicle's battery. Quick connects (CU881076 - sold separately) are available to make removing and re-installing the winch easy.

Winch Line Pull Capacity

Layers of RopeCapacity (lbs)Total Rope on Drum (ft)
1st Layer12,00021.5
2nd Layer10,06047.2
3rd Layer8,65977
4th Layer7,601110.9
5th Layer6,774125

The line pull capacity of your winch is determined by the maximum load your winch can pull with a single layer of rope on the drum. As more layers of rope are wound onto the drum, pulling the same load requires more force, leading to a loss in winching power. With a 2nd layer of rope around the drum, your line pull capacity is reduced by approximately 14 percent. With 3 layers on the drum, the line pull capacity is reduced by approximately 23 percent, and with 4 layers on the drum it is reduced by approximately 35 percent.

Note: It is recommended that you begin any line pull with a minimum of 5 wraps and a maximum of 2 layers of rope on the drum.

Vehicle Recovery and Winch Capacity

To select the appropriate off-road/recovery winch for your application, determine your gross vehicle weight. The GVW is the stand-alone weight of your vehicle plus the weight of any items in and on the vehicle. Once you have determined the GVW of your vehicle, choose a winch with a capacity that is 1-1/2 times your GVW. Using that formula, this winch - with a 12,000-pound capacity - will work for vehicles with an approximate GVW of 8,000 pounds.

Rolling Load Winch Capacity

Percent InclineRolling Load Capacity (lbs)
Level Surface120,000
5 (3°)80,040
10 (6°)60,240
20 (11°)40,800
30 (17°)31,320
50 (26°)22,320
70 (35°)18,360
100 (45°)15,480
rolling load

To calculate your winch's rolling load capacity - the amount of weight it can pull up an incline - you must multiply the line pull capacity by a factor determined by the degree of the incline.

The multiplication factors shown in the chart, right, include a 10-percent rolling friction factor.

Note: A 5-percent - or 3-degree - incline is a 1/2' rise over a 10' distance. Follow the chart to determine your winch's rolling load capacity.

Double-Line Pulling

Double-Line Pulling

Increase the pulling capacity of your winch by doubling up the rope with a pulley block (CU881082 - sold separately). Secure the pulley block to a tree saver strap (CU881091 - sold separately) with a bow shackle (CU881092 - sold separately) to provide a strong anchor for your double-line pull. Or use the 8-piece rigging kit (CU882068- sold separately) that includes everything you need for heavy duty recovery. Using double-line operation will approximately double your winch's pulling capacity.

Video Transcript for ComeUp Electric Winch - Truck Winch - CU850013 Review

Speaker 2: Today we're going to be taking a look at part number CU850013. This is the Come Up DV12 Light Winch. It's going to have your wire rope design. The winch is specifically designed for off roaders who have heavy loading requirements. It does feature a nice compact size for how powerful of a winch it is. Light weight as well as low profile.

The winch is going to have a single line pull rating of 12,000 pounds. It's going to feature the heavy duty sealed contactor with silver alloy contact pads, thick copper bus bars, and a submersible construction to ensure weather resistance. We're also going to have the heavy duty series wound motor. That's going to deliver superior torque output as well as faster line speed. The braking system on the unit is going to be an automatic, full load CBS. CBS stands for Cone Brake Structure.

The braking mechanism is mounted outside the drum rather than inside the drum so this is going to help disperse heat quicker and more efficiently. The winch is going to feature tough aluminum die cast housings with a steel drum. It's going to come with your industrial grade water proof remote control. It's going to feature a thermometric LED indicator on the switch. That's going to automatically alert when the motor is on the verge of overheating.

You're going to have about 17 feet of cord to work with. The plug right here on the remote's going to plug right on top of our black box. It's got the dust cap on it so you can protect those connection points when your remote control's not connected. The remote control has a nice easy to use design. It's going to come with the wrist tether, and it's got the side walls to help protect the toggle switch. Now, this is going to have the 12,000 pound rated single line pull at max load.

The winch is going to have a line speed of 3.3 feet per minute with a power draw of 350 amps at 12 volts. With no load it's going to have a line speed of 26.2 feet per minute with a power draw of 50 amps at 12 volts. The motor is a 4.6 horsepower, 12 volt, series run motor. All necessary hardware and wiring is included. When mounting this it's very important that the winch is mounted on a flat hard surface of the mounting channel in order to make sure that the motor, the drum, and the gear box housing are all aligned correctly. It's going to feature the rugged and quiet 3 stage planetary gear system for maximum mechanical advantage. It's going to feature a gear ratio of 211 to 1. It's going to come with your roller fair lead as well as the mounting hardware for the fair lead. You can see here that each one's going to roll nice and smooth. The wire rope's going to come out in between these rollers and it's going to get connected to the hook. Any time that that rope is extended out or being brought back in, it's going to make contact with these pieces right here. These are going to roll so that's going to reduce the amount of friction applied to the wire rope, which is overall going to protect it and extend the life of the wire rope. We're going to have the clutch system right here. It's going to use a T handle. Right now it's in the engaged position. That means we could hook up the remote control and we could use that to winch. You could pull out the T handle and then rotate it. That's going to move it to a disengaged position. That's going to allow us to grab the end of the cable and extend it out. It's going to allow rapid rope payout because it allows it to go into a free spool mode. That way we can extend it out quickly and get it connected to our load or to our anchor point. When it comes to the drum size we're looking at a 2 1/2 inch diameter by 9 inches in length. It's going to feature the 87 by 19 galvanized aircraft grade wire rope. That's going to give us a diameter measurement of 3/8 of an inch with an overall measurement length measurement of 82 feet. It's also going to come with your forged steel hook. That's going to have your safety latch mechanism on it, spring loaded to prevent accidental disconnecting. It's going to have the hand saver strap. That's going to get connected to the end of the wire rope using the pin and clip that's provided. Now the mounting bolt pattern. There's going to be 4 bolt holes here on the bottom side. You can kind of see them right there. Measuring the distance from this one to this one, center on center, looking at about 10 inches. Then on the back it's going to be 4 1/2 inches. Again, all the necessary wiring and hardware is included with this part number. The winch itself is going to weigh about 86 pounds. It's going to measure about 24.1 inches long, 6.4 inches wide, and around 7 inches tall not including the black box. The reason why that's not included in the measurement is because there's a couple different ways to mount the box. You do it using the clamps mounting it to the motor housing like I have today, or it's got these 2 tracks right here on the back of it. It runs the full length of the box. It's going to come with hardware that can be mounted inside those tracks so you can mount it to a different surface if needed. That's going to do it for today's look at part number CU850013.

It came on time and was packaged great. I am using the winch to load my race cars into my enclosed trailer. It is working very well. It is slow enough to make loading safe but fast enough to not take all day. I am very pleased.

by:

Winch was very easy to install.Winch was used for my 20 foot Maritime Skiff. Pulls the boat up on a trailer with no problem at all. Very pleased with the product

by:

This has been a great winch. We use it hard almost every day loading portable buildings. My only issues 1) I was led to believe it came with a remote control, it didn't 2) the hard wired control is giving us problems starting and stopping the winch.

by:

Has worked perfectly. No issues after pulling my track cars onto my trailer around 75 times. I do notice fraying of the rope... Will probably need replacement pretty soon. Without the rope fray I would give it 5 stars.

by:

This winch worked better than I thought it would. Mounted in a car trailer. The remote makes it very easy to control the winch and steer the vehicle.

by:

For my purposes this has worked out well. It is relatively portable and I connect with a hitch on either the front or back of my Envoy. Well constructed and competively priced.
