Bulldog Winch Alpha Series

The Alpha Series recovery winch has all the features of a Bulldog Winch Standard Series winch - a wire rope, roller fairlead, hand-held remote, and sealed contactor - with some serious upgrades. The Alpha motor offers more horsepower, a faster line-pull speed, and a longer duty cycle. It's also connected to a thermal limiter that prevents it from overheating. The power unit has an integrated on/off switch, the contactor has a higher amp rating, and the installation wires have a fiberglass sheathing for added safety. The free-spool clutch is also easier to shift, and the winch frame is built of thicker steel than the Standard Series winches.

Heavy-Duty, 6.8-Horsepower Alpha Motor

Bulldog Winch Alpha Motor

The Alpha features a 6.8-horsepower, 12-volt DC motor with 15,000 lbs of line pull. This heavy-duty, series-wound motor is more powerful and more dependable than a permanent magnet motor, and it generates more torque and dispenses heat more efficiently when operating at high speeds. A built-in vent lets vapor escape to prevent moisture buildup, and a finned heat sink allows the heat to quickly dissipate to keep the motor cool. The motor is constructed of durable, corrosion-resistant materials including the powder coated housing, galvanized motor tube, copper battery terminals, and zinc-plated steel hardware.

Thermal Limiting Switch

Bulldog Winch Thermal Limiting SwitchBulldog Winch Thermal Limiting Switch with Green LED inside power unit

There is a thermal limiting switch inside the power unit that prevents the unit from overheating. The green LED light on the top of the power unit indicates that the winch is functioning. This light will shut off and power to the motor will be cut when the temperature exceeds 158 degrees. The light comes back on and the thermal limiter automatically reconnects the power once the motor has cooled down enough to resume operation.

Power Unit with Sealed Contactor

Bulldog Winch Power UnitBulldog Winch Contactor

The contactor - or solenoid - transmits power from the vehicle's battery to the winch motor. The 500-amp contactor - located inside the power unit - is sealed to meet IP67 specifications for water and weather resistance. The copper terminals and zinc-plated hardware are corrosion resistant. The battery leads have heat- and abrasion-resistant sheathing and are labeled with flags for easy installation.

Remote plugged into power unit

The on/off switch on the back of the power unit lets you shut off the power when you aren't using the winch. There is also a rubber-sealed plug on top of the power unit that houses the attachment port for the remote control. For convenience - or to free up space in a tight fit - you can also mount the power unit remotely with a special wiring kit (BDW20132 - sold separately).

Free-Spooling Clutch with Rotating Handle

Bulldog Winch Free-Spooling Clutch freespool

The free-spool clutch enables you to pull out the rope by hand. This saves battery power, prevents the brake from wearing down prematurely, reduces wear on the motor, and is much faster than waiting for the drum to unroll the rope. To release the clutch for free-spooling simply rotate the handle to the position indicated by the stick figure icon on the label. To reengage the clutch, rotate the handle back to the position indicated by the vehicle icon on the label.

The clutch is driven by a 3-stage planetary gear train. This provides more speed than traditional worm gear drives or 1- or 2-stage planetary gear trains. It includes a ring gear that slides over the planetary gear set to lock it in or out of gear.

The gearbox can be rotated in 30-degree increments to 12 different positions to ensure that you can easily access the clutch handle no matter where the winch is mounted. This is great for custom and in-bumper applications, on vehicles with small engines where space is extremely limited, or when mounting the winch foot-forward with the clutch handle facing the radiator.

The steel gearbox has a finned heat sink that allows heat to quickly dissipate. It's also sealed to keep out moisture, and it has a black powder coat finish for rust resistance. The chrome-plated clutch handle is stylish and weather resistant.

Automatic, Load-Holding Mechanical Brake

Bulldog Winch Mechanical Brake

The mechanical brake controls the line speed and prevents unintentional payout (or creep). It activates when the winch is in gear and the rope is winding out. As the drum rotates outward, the brake expands to put pressure on the inside wall of the drum. It contracts when the drum rotates inward, releasing brake pressure. At maximum pressure the brake holds 100 percent of the load.

The friction created when the brake pads press against the drum generates heat. The steel tube drum is designed to disperse this heat across its entire surface. This prevents potentially damaging heat buildup near the motor.

And since the brake is located inside the drum, the winch has a smaller profile and will fit in locations where space is limited such as between a vehicle's bumper and radiator.

Weather-Resistant Hand-Held Remote

Bulldog Winch Hand-Held Remote

The hand-held remote has a 12' lead and an in/out rocker switch so you can operate your winch at a distance. The rocker switch is sealed and water resistant so it won't get damaged in wet conditions. Simply plug the durable plastic remote into the power unit when you need to use it, and disconnect it to store it away when you aren't using it.

There is a wireless remote kit (BDW21056 - sold separately) that lets you operate the winch from up to 100' away. You can also operate the winch from the comfort of your vehicle with a dash-mounted in-cab control (BDW20064 - sold separately).

Wire Rope

Bulldog Winch Wire Rope

The wire rope is made of high-strength, aircraft-grade galvanized steel that is zinc-plated to resist abrasions and withstand harsh UV rays, chemicals, and extreme temperatures.

The rope winds around a solid steel drum. The mounting flanges are strong enough to resist bending or breaking if the rope wrap becomes uneven and excess stress is put on the drum.

A hand-saver strap is included to use in conjunction with work gloves (BDW20070 - sold separately) so that you can safely handle the rope and hook. A rock bag (BDW20048 - sold separately) is also recommended. The rock bag helps prevent a broken rope from snapping back by forcing it to the ground.

Steel Hook

The removable clevis hook is constructed of high-strength forged alloy steel that is heavy duty and rust resistant. It has a spring-loaded safety latch for quick fastening and removal. The hook attaches to the steel thimble on the end of the synthetic rope.

Roller Fairlead

Bulldog Winch Roller Fairlead

The roller fairlead has a thick steel frame with 4 steel rollers. The rollers reduce friction when you're pulling the rope in or paying it out, and they prevent the rope from becoming pinched when pulling at extreme angles. The rollers have a silver-zinc-plated finish that is tough and corrosion resistant. The fairlead installs with zinc-plated hardware.

Note: The roller fairlead does not mount directly to the winch - it typically attaches to tabs on the winch mounting plate (sold separately). Most aftermarket mounts include these tabs.

Rugged Construction

The Alpha Series winch is constructed of strong, durable materials that are able to withstand any weather condition or terrain. The vented motor and sealed gearbox are made of corrosion-resistant powder coated steel. The contactor is sealed to keep water out, and the power unit is constructed of heavy-duty yet lightweight plastic that makes it ideal for mounting in remote locations. The steel tie bars and extra-thick side frame drum supports help to create a strong and rigid winch body.

Installation

You will need a suitable mounting location to install the winch on the front of your vehicle. Winch mounts are built into many aftermarket bumpers and grille guards. Alternatively, you can install a universal front-mount plate (BDW20008 - sold separately) to create a mounting point for both your winch and fairlead.

If you are mounting the winch on your bumper or grille guard, you can use the included wiring to connect the winch to your vehicle's battery. Quick connects (BDW20133 - sold separately) are available to make removing and re-installing the winch easy. If you are mounting the winch at the back of your vehicle or on a trailer, you may need an additional 20' long wiring kit (BDW20206 - sold separately) or a 24' long wiring kit (BDW20207 - sold separately) for extended cabs and long beds.

Winch Line Pull Capacity

Layers of RopeCapacity (lbs)Total Rope on Drum (ft)
1st Layer15,00015
2nd Layer12,80035
3rd Layer11,00060
4th Layer9,80085

The line pull capacity of your winch is determined by the maximum load your winch can pull with a single layer of rope on the drum. As more layers of rope are wound onto the drum, pulling the same load requires more force, leading to a loss in winching power. With a 2nd layer of rope around the drum, your line pull capacity is reduced by approximately 14 percent. With 3 layers on the drum, the line pull capacity is reduced by approximately 23 percent, and with 4 layers on the drum it is reduced by approximately 35 percent.

Note: It is recommended that you begin any line pull with a minimum of 5 wraps and a maximum of 2 layers of rope on the drum.

Vehicle Recovery and Winch Capacity

To select the appropriate off-road/recovery winch for your application, determine your gross vehicle weight. The GVW is the stand-alone weight of your vehicle plus the weight of any items in and on the vehicle. Once you have determined the GVW of your vehicle, choose a winch with a capacity that is 1-1/2 times your GVW. Using that formula, this winch - with a 15,000-pound capacity - will work for vehicles with an approximate GVW of 10,000 pounds.

Rolling Load Winch Capacity

Percent InclineRolling Load Capacity (lbs)
Level Surface150,000
5 (3°)100,050
10 (6°)75,750
20 (11°)51,000
30 (17°)39,150
50 (26°)27,900
70 (35°)22,950
100 (45°)19,350
Rolling Load

To calculate your winch's rolling load capacity - the amount of weight it can pull up an incline - you must multiply the line pull capacity by a factor determined by the degree of the incline.

The multiplication factors shown in the chart, right, include a 10-percent rolling friction factor.

Note: A 5-percent - or 3-degree - incline is a 1/2' rise over a 10' distance. Follow the chart to determine your winch's rolling load capacity.

Double-Line Pulling

Double-Line Pulling

Increase the pulling capacity of your winch by doubling up the rope with a pulley block (BDW20077 - sold separately). Secure the pulley block to a recovery strap (BDW20031 - sold separately) with a bow shackle (BDW20021 - sold separately) to provide a strong anchor for your double-line pull. Or use the Bulldog Winch 8-piece rigging kit (BDW20196 - sold separately) that includes everything you need for heavy-duty recovery. Using double-line operation will approximately double your winch's pulling capacity.

Video Transcript for Review of Bulldog Winch Electric Winch - Truck Winch - Recovery Winch - BDW10047

Michael: Hi there I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Today we're going to take a quick look at the Alpha Series Off-Road Winch by Bulldog Winch. This is a premium, heavy duty recovery winch. It's going to allow you to get your stuck vehicles out of the snow, mud or ditch, even if it's got steep inclines. It's going to have a static straight line pull rating of 15,000 pounds. So it's going to be great for your work trucks, your Jeeps, or other off-road vehicles with a maximum gross vehicle weight of 10,000 pounds.

So it is very heavy duty. It's constructed of corrosion resistant powder coated steel, and other strong durable materials that are able to withstand any weather condition or terrain. With everything on here it weighs about 97 pounds. So it is extremely heavy, very heavy duty, solid system to help get your vehicle removed from those stuck situations. It's got a 6.8 horsepower, 12 volt DC series wound motor. That's going to deliver powerful and fast, safe line pulling.

It's going to give us that 15,000 pounds of line pull rating. It's also going to give us a top wind speed of up to 20 feet per minute. So it's very fast. It's got an automatic mechanical brake that's going to hold 100% of the load. So we're not going to have to worry about any unintentional payouts or creep.

It's going to really grab onto that so that we don't have to worry when we have that break engaged, it's going to hold that weight. We do have a three eights inch diameter wire rope that is made of aircraft grade galvanized steel. So it's going to be extremely strong. It is zinc plated. So it's going to resist abrasion.

It's also going to help it withstand harsh UV rays, chemicals, and extreme temperatures. Our wire rope is 85 feet long. So we're going to have plenty of length to get down to our vehicle or up to the tree, whatever the case may be. We also have this three eights inch clevis hook that's constructed of high strength, forged steel. So it's going to be extremely strong, heavy duty and rust resistant. It's got a spring loaded safety latch here. That's going to make it quick and easy to attach and remove. We also have our hand strap here so that we can save our hands from our wire rope as we're pulling out our rope to get to the tree or wherever we're going to tie off to. We do have a free spooling clutch. That's going to ensure a nice fast rope payout, which will reduce the wear on the motor. This can be rotated 360 degrees. So depending on how you have your winch mounted, you can ensure that you always have access to that clutch. It's going to give us the option to switch into the payout position so that we can easily pull out that rope and then put it back into the gears so that our motor will pull that back in. We also have a steel roller fairlead with a thick steel frame. Our four rollers are made out of steel, like so many other components here. So these are going to help reduce the friction of our wire. If we're pulling at extreme angles, like off to the side here, it's not going to get bound up and pinched. It's going to make sure that that's nice and smooth. These are coated with a silver zinc plating to resist corrosion as well. Now, keep in mind, you're steel fairlead here is not going to attach directly to your winch. It will attach to your winch mounting plate, which is sold separately, but it should work with just about any winch mounting plate that there is. So keep that in mind. You will need to pick that up. If you don't already have one.We also have our rubber handheld remote. That's going to let us operate the winch from a safe distance. We've got 12 feet of cable here so that when we plug it in to the top, we're going to be able to stand 12 feet away. So if anything we're to happen, break free or come flying at us, we can be 12 feet away from that line of pull so that it's not going to be flying directly at us. This does give us the option. Little rocker switch here to go in and out. This is a weather resistant switch that's going to allow us to control our winch. Now there is a wireless remote control available, you can find that on our product page as a related product. And that just allows you obviously to be even farther away. I think it's up to a hundred feet. So if you want it to be even farther, if you're wanting to be up away from the vehicle, as you're pulling it up, that will give you that option. Or you can use it from inside your vehicle, as you can, with our 12 foot lead here. This unit has a lot of different features to it. I'm not going to go into all of them, but one key point is it's got several different features to help prevent any overheating and to provide a longer duty cycle. So the cycle is three minutes on 15 minutes off. So that should be a lot of time for you to get your vehicle pulled out of the ditch or snow or mud or wherever it is that you're stuck. But it's got a lot of different heat sinks and heat release valves and things to help it not overheat. So it will last longer for you. We've got a lot of information about this product on our product page. So if you're wanting any more of the nitty gritty details, I'd encourage you to come take a look at that. I'm just trying to give you a broad overview here to show you just how rugged and heavy duty this is. This does come with all the hardware that you're going to need to get it mounted and instructions to help you get it mounted. Keep in mind, of course, you don't have that mounting plate. So you will have to pick that up separately. As far as our dimensions go. This is going to be right about 23 and a quarter of an inch long, about six and a half inches wide, and then about 11 and a quarter of an inch tall up to our platform up here.So if you're looking for a heavy duty winch and that's going to help you get out of those tough situations, I think this is going to be a great option. This does come with a limited lifetime warranty on the mechanical parts and a three year warranty on the electrical parts. It is going to hook right up to your vehicle's battery. So you don't have to worry about a separate power source. But I think this is going to be a great option for those of you who have a 10,000 pound vehicle that you take off roading with you a lot, or if you've got a work truck or something that you can often get stuck in the mud. I think this is going to be a very nice heavy duty option for you.So that's going to complete our look at the Alpha Series Off-Road Winch by Bulldog Winch. Again I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Thanks for watching.

This bully as-9000tx is a good in-betweener of a step and a running board.
I needed a strong low hanging step that I could "pirouette" on. I am 75years and weigh 280 pounds. Bad back etc. I get up with both feet then turn around and scrunch my ample behind up and on seat. The point is it has held real well.
Okay..the installation was not an easy one..My 1997 f150 4x4 3door pickup
is not an easy fit. the "seam" that most steps rest on is very narrow and drilling the 2 holes for each mount proved un-doable ..too narrow. These got welded on.
The 4 holes that supposed to be drilled for the top part of mounts on the rocker panel...would be very hard (too cramped for drilling)..maybe with a right angle drill
You might do it. My installer guy welded them too..and also drilled a couple holes and used larger screw/bolts than were provided. So that is my story.
For my truck it is an excellent step but needed a pro guy with welder stuff.
Cost me $100 bucks install but he is friend of my son. Probably cost more.??
Cost less on e-trailer than other online retailers.

The step mounts to the rocker panel. It requires drilling with an angle drill. Also, self tapping screws are part of the mounting. I don't trust the self tapping screws because the sheet metal in the rocker panel is too thin and is indented with grooves which make it difficult to line up the self tapping screws. I mounted two of the steps and when finished, I had my son and daughter try them out. The steps both shifted when they were stepped on. I had to make modifications to strengthen the mountings. I would have preferred to have steps that mount to the cab mounts (frame). Now because of the drilling, I will have to try to rust proof the rocker panels. Otherwise, the steps look good and now are strong enough to be used safely.
