Video Transcript for Rhino-Rack Vortex Aero Crossbars Locking Endcaps Review

Hi everyone, it's Evangeline here at etrailer, and today, I'm gonna talk about and show you how to install the Rhino-Rack Locking End Caps for your Vortex Aero Bars. So you might be here for different reasons, maybe you've seen one of my many roof rack installation videos where I installed a roof rack on your car and I recommend, "Hey, if you want, you could upgrade to locking end caps." Or maybe you already have a Rhino-Rack Roof Rack, and you're using a T-track slot a little bit more often than usual and you wanna make sure that you keep that secured. Well, here are the locking end caps to upgrade your system. Your Rhino-Rack Roof Rack already comes with locking end caps, but they use a plastic lock core that uses a plastic key. I still think this is really good security because not everyone has a special type of a hex key, and it keeps it secure to your crossbar, but sometimes, you may wanna upgrade. You can upgrade to these metal lock cores so these have a special number on them, and if you use the Rhino-Rack Master Key with a bunch of different lock cores you can have it keyed-alike to your own accessories.

It works the same way as the plastic lock , so you just turn the key. With this kit, you get four of these locking end caps, these four are keyed-alike and you get two keys. So if you want your accessories to match too, let's say you have a Rhino-Rack Bike Rack and you wanna switch out the lock cores, you are gonna have to get more than four master key lock cores if you want everything to be keyed-alike. So if that's your plan, plan ahead of time, otherwise, you're just getting four lock cores with this kit. Switching out is very easy.

You use your plastic key to turn your old end cap into the unlocked position. Pop that end cap off, and then you get your new end cap. This is in the unlocked position, and that just pops right back in. Repeat the process for all four end caps, and make sure that all of them are locked before your trip. And that's it.

Was a look at the locking end caps for your Rhino-Rack Vortex Aero Bars. My name is Evangeline, and I hope you enjoyed the journey.

This is a simple review for a simple product. If you plan on using your Rhino Vortex bars with accessories that slide into the T-Slot channel and lock down on the bars, you need these locks. They are well integrated and of high quality and they simply lock the ends of each of your bars. If you only use the clamp style rack accessories that fit around the bar and clamp down, then these locks will be completely useless for you. They are only meant to protect items that are physically attached to the bars via t-slot/channel.

As for an update, these locks have been solid and have performed as they should. Ive used my Rhino rack many times over the year and for the accessories I have that use the T-Slot channel, Ive never felt that items I left on top of the car were at risk or not secure enough. They are always on through rain, snow and everything else, and the locking mechanisms have not rusted and they still perform well. Quality Product.

I purchased these to go with the Rhino-Rack SX Series Legs for Vortex Aero Crossbars - Flush Factory Side Rails - Qty 4. Works awesome.

by:

I order Rhino-Rack Locking Endcaps for Vortex Aero Crossbars - Metal Cores to replace the plastic endcaps. The metal cores are firmly attached to the Rhino-Rack Crossbars than the plastic cores. The photo is from my 2008 Nissan Altima 3.5L V6 SE Sedan attached with Rhino-Rack Roof Rack system and Swagman roof bike rack. I order Swagman roof bike rack from etrailer.com, too.

by:

Plastic core worked fine until an ice storm. Only lost one but now I’ll have 3 spare (if I remember where I put them). Hopefully metal core will last longer

by:

Product was exactly as described

by:

much improved over the ones that come with it I would purchase again.

by:

Might be overkill, but I like everything locked and secure. I think it is a worthwhile upgrade for the plastic locks that come with the crossbars.

by:

Very irritated I had to buy these when I spent over $[XX] on a roof rack. You think spending that much money they would just come with the metal cores. The plastic ones just fall off or easily come right out

by:

I wish the cap was metal as well not just the lock barrels. It seems someone could melt it with a heat source and pop the lock off. It is better than the stock endcap that came with it that is all plastic

by:

Definitely an improvement over the stock caps. However I did have an issue with one of them still being able to pulled off while in the locked position. It has stayed on though.

by:

Very nice product heavy duty steel locking mechanisms with two keys, fits right in to prevent theft.Using product to transport kayaks around.
Would highly recommend.
Thank you,

by:

If you don't want to have the plastic cores get these. They work well and use a normal key, not a round one like the plastic caps come with. It's worth the price in my opinion.

by:

Fits my truck perfectly, looks really good, and was a great deal less expensive than the bigger name brands you probably know about. The customer service was fantastic and the installation video they supplied was customized to my specific truck and rack kit making it a breeze to put on the roof.

by:

These end caps were easy to install and much better than the plastic version.

by:

We didn't realize that the racks already came with a basic plastic locking function but we feel more secure knowing that we have a higher quality lock. Having the keys instead of the plastic tool is also easier to keep track of.

by:

Great service, great product.

by:

Received the full Rhino Rack kit with Vortex Bars to go over my F150 crew cab short bed with Retrax Pro XR retractable Tonneau cover. Took about 20' to install and have the full kit working first time out of the box. Great service delivery, everything included in one shipment! The 71" bar size gave 3.75" on either side of the towers and still kept the end of the rails within the overall edges of the truck line.

Thanks guys!

I bought the rhino rack rooftop rack a year ago and am very pleased with my purchase. I also added a rhino rack bike carrier to carry my road bike with me. It has performed very well on several camping trips in the past year.

by:

This has been an excellent purchase. The aerobatic profile produces negligible noise at highway speeds. They were easy to mount on my 2012 Honda Fit and make it look very sporty. The black finish looks especially good. The assembly and mounting instructions were thorough and easy to follow. The locking metal aero bar end caps work perfectly. Overall an excellent product that I recommend highly to anyone needing a stylish, quiet and easy to mount roof rack.

by:

Received Rhino roof rack for Toyota Highlander, 2018. Rapid delivery, easy assembly but takes an hour or so. Like the feature that racks are easy to put on and remove, after installation of custom mounting brackets. With this type of straight rack i have no desire to leave on all the time. Perfect for my application of occasional use for Kayak, lumber, doors, etc.

by:

Melissa was SUPER helpful. I needed to replace my old end caps so I could lock in a new kayak carrier. She set me up with the replacements and they fit perfectly! Always love purchasing from eTrailer!

by:

The Rhino Rack locking end caps gave us the security we were looking for and is a nice finishing touch for the entire roof rack package.

by:

Great product. We carried our kayaks all of last year with no issues at all. If you are looking for quality this is what you need.

by:

EXCELLENT customer service! I was missing rubber strips on the cross bars and etrailer responded quickly and sent me the missing parts.
would definitely buy and recommend this company, A+!!!

by:

Exactly what I requested. I have purchased several times from etrailer and have been pleased with everything from timely arrival to exactly what I was hoping for.

  • Can Plastic Lock Cores on Rhino-Rack Vortex Crossbars Be Removed
Are you talking about the plastic lock cores that came on the Rhino-Rack Vortex Aero Crossbars you purchased from us about a year ago? The plastic "locks" are really just in place to help keep the end caps from flying off of the crossbar during travel. I'm sure you can punch out the lock core but then that defeats the purpose.
