Video Transcript for Redline Dust Cap Driver Tool Review

Today we are going to review the Dust Cap Driver Tool. This tool comes in three different sizes. The one we are going to use today is for dust caps that are 1.986 inches and this is going to be part number 290-991. This is the one we are going to use on the demonstration today but notice the other two part numbers are pretty much identical accept for the diameters. Then we have got the dust cap and we are going to uses the 1.986 diameter and basically all it does is sit in place like that and use a mallet and drive it into the hub. 00:30

Lets use it in actual practice. There are a couple of ways you can do this. You can set it on there maybe give it a couple of taps just to help get it started or you can start the whole way and drive it in. It makes installing the dust cap that easy and you do not have any dents on the outside of the cap as well. With that, that will finish the review of the Dust Cap Driver Tool.

This tool allows installing the dust cap on the hub without distorting it. And it is made in the USA. I also used it to install the grease seals in my trailer hubs.

by:

A must have if you are working on your trailer hub.

by:

They work great thank you

by:

Worked perfect, made installation very easy. No risk of damaging the dust caps.

This is a very well made tool. I haven't had a chance to use it yet, but I have checked the sizing against a spare 2.44" OD dust cap and it's a perfect fit - just loose enough to not tear up my painted caps but tight enough to put all the force on the flange. The actual depth of the cup is slightly over 1 1/8". A typical 2.44" OD cap is just under 1 1/8".

A year later, still perfect! I keep one in the storage unit with the trailer, and another one in my truck in case its ever needed on the road.

I bought all three sizes. I service a fleet of pickup trailers in the oilfields and after so many hubcaps, you'll look for something to do the job better. Reinstalling an old cap isnt too bad most of the time, new ones are where these tools shine. The majority of new hubcaps will not install easy, without some good heavy persuasion. And its just a sad sight, a bent, bruisied and beat up brand new hubcap. But this tool will make you proud.

I've noticed hammering on hubcaps can lead to them actually falling off down the road (pun). And the other issue is with the cotter pin inside. If the cap is dented badly, it will rub on the cotter pin or grease zerk, if it didn't already break off. Its not easy to cause this but it is possible.
Breakdown of why I bought these:
50% getting so incredibly annoyed that the cap just won't go on and being tempted to use a BFH. 30% because a newly overhauled trailer looked like h-edouble hockey sticks when I got done with it. 20% noticing hammered caps seem to fall off easier, later.

These are extremely well made thus far. I was surprised how nice and heavy they were, no quality skimping here. The cup end is made of a perfect thickness, you could toss this thing around no worries. The shaft is solid or at least thickwalled judging by the weight. And the end is a separate rounded off piece just waiting for the hammer time.

Note, the length I'm not sure on yet. The end sticks out just above the hand when grasping tool. Maybe nice to be an inch longer? Not sure yet.
Other thing I noticed is how close fitting this is. Not a con, but just keep in mind its not gonna be good for installing old beat up caps.

For removing hub caps look into SnapOns GCP10 pliers. Together, these tools are the perfect pair.

If you have EVER tried to put a new dust cap on a trailer hub, then you know how hard that can be. For small caps, often a large 12 point socket will work but for a 2.44" cap you need this invaluable tool.

by:

I’m a fleet manager with large company the medium tool is the most used in my fleet 65 trailers we check bearings 1 a month on all trailers that’s a lot of caps off and back on with no damage to cap wow what a tool. THANKS ETRAILER.....

by:

perfect tool for putting dust caps on. I've tried putting caps on previously and allways end up banging them up. With this tool they went on straight and still look good when your finished. Simple tool, great price.

by:

these grease cap tools work great! used on my old Plymouth without distorting the grease cap...put it over grease cap and give it a couple of whacks!..a nice tight fit..the bigger ones will work with most other truck, .suv, van grease caps!..a must tool!! Love um!! a great buy and must have!

by:

Good product but Medium was too large for my 2.33" cap.

by:

Excellent product - no more denting the dust caps when installing new ones. Purchased two sizes.

by:

The tool worked perfectly without any damage to grease caps. Grease caps fit as they should.

by:

I bought all sizes of this tool. Works great for removal and installation without damaging caps or hubs.

by:

The tool fits the dust caps nicely and prevents denting them when installing.

by:

Great product extremely useful works as stated vital part of my tool kit

by:

great tool! simple idea, but very effective to avoid damage to the hub cover

by:

This product is just what I was looking for. I wish I had it in the past, it would have saved me a a lot of money and aggravation. Shipping was really fast too.

by:

Product was ok, but regretfully it was too large, which was ok, since a rubber mallet worked great for the seal installation.

by:

This tool was just what I needed, and was unable to locate locally. Arrived promptly, packed well,

  • Dust Cap On Trailer Hub Keeps Falling Off
If your hub ever made hard contact with a curb or something similar then it is possible that the center bore isn't true anymore. It is also possible that the cap was not driven in evenly. That coupled with centrifugal force will cause it to fall off. To drive in a dust cap evenly you can use a dust cap driver tool. We have a couple options: # 290-992 works with 2.440 inch grease caps # 290-993 works with 2.72 inch grease caps Using a driver tool will ensure that the cap is driven in evenly.

  • Grease Caps in Dexter Trailer Hub Assembly # 84545BX Are Difficult to Install in Hubs
Thank you for your recent purchase of a pair of Dexter Trailer Hub Assembly Kits # 84545BX. This kit includes a 1.986-inch outer diameter grease cap that is intended to make for a snug fit in the bore of the hub. Often it is easiest to use a small block of wood or a grease cap driver tool like # 290-992 to get these into the hub bore. The fit is intentionally snug to keep the caps in place.

  • How to Remove a Trailer EZ Lube Grease Cap or Dust Cap
EZ Lube Dust Caps, like # DC200L-DCRP, have a rubber plug that can be removed to access the zerk fitting. The rubber plug can be removed by gently prying it up with a flathead screwdriver. If your dust cap is in good condition and you want to avoid getting dents in the cover, you can use the Dust Cap Driver Tool to remove the cap. Simply slide it over the dust cap and then use the leverage created by the handle to gently pry on the cap in different directions until it begins to wiggle....

  • Will Dust Cap Tool Work for Recessed Cap
The Dust Cap Driver Tool # 290-992 could work despite the recess you have. It measures just about 5" long so just be sure you have a bit more length than that or there is enough room for you to be able to maneuver the tool. Also keep in mind that this tool works for grease caps that have a 2.44" outer diameter.

  • What Size Grease Cap Will Fit 1.95-inch Hub and EZ-Lube Spindles
You identified the correct grease cap, part # RG04-040. This is sold as a set of two caps. If you ever need replacement rubber plugs we also offer these as a set of two, part # RG04-010. Since your trailer uses EZ-Lube zerk fittings on the spindles you will be better off with a grease cap that has a removable plug. This will enable you to get quick access to the grease fitting without having to take off the grease caps. If you want to simplify installation of the grease caps you might...

  • Availability of Trailer Hub Dust Cap Installation and Removal Tool
We do offer grease cap installation tools, three of which are shown on the linked page, such as # 290-992. The primary use of these is allowing you to install a grease cap with even pressure all around, without deforming it. Although not intended as a "removal tool" these can still help you loosen a grease cap since they fit over the entire cap and allow you to wobble it slightly to break it free from the hub bore. You can also use gentle application of a rubber mallet to help coax a...
