Video Transcript for Review of Kodiak Trailer Brakes - Replacement Caliper Mounting Bracket - KCMB137IE

Hello everybody, this is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today we're gonna take a look at this replacement E-coat mounting bracket for the Kodiak disc brake caliper on a 7,000 pound axle that has the 8,000 pound integral hub and rotor. Now this caliper mounting bracket is designed for use with 13-inch rotors, or the 8,000-pound hub and rotor assemblies that have an eight on six and a half inch bolt pattern, and use either nine 16ths inch or five eighths inch diameter wheel bolts. If you notice this bracket, this mounting bracket has a nice e-coat finish on it. Provides corrosion resistance for fresh water and limited salt water use. They do use the embossed bolt holes, provide extra thread contact for your caliper guide bolts.

Gives you a nice tight, secure connection between the bracket and the caliper. Does have the side supports to ensure that the load is carried by the bracket, not just the bolts. And it offers stiffeners that should reduce the vibration when you break. And this is a universal design. Works with either left hand or right hand side assemblies.

Again, the axle rating this fits is 7,000 pounds. The rotor diameter 13 inches. And as you can see, the brake flange configurations designed to fit a five volt brake mounting flange. But that's gonna do it for the review on this replacement E-Coat mounting bracket for the Kodiak disc brake caliper on a 7,000 pound axle with the 8,000 pound integral hub and rotors.

Unfortunately, this bracket will not work. It actually extends further out from the axle mount instead of inward. I would need a bracket that would extend inward to create more distance between the rotor and caliper mounting bracket. I'm not sure any Kodiak brackets exist for what I need. My existing caliper bracket appears to be the best choice. Unfortunately, with the new idler hub and rotor conversion, there lacks about 1/4-3/8 of an inch clearance between the existing caliper bracket and the new rotor. The problem appears to be that the offset in the new rotor is about 1/4 inch more than the old integral rotor.. Although the photographs of back sides of both the new and old rotors show a 1/2 inch difference, about 1/4 inch can be attributed to rotor damage on the old rotor (in other words the old rotor offset from the inside {or backside} surface of the rotor to the back of the hub in an undamaged rotor should be 1 1/4 inches). I believe that a 1/4-5/16 inch spacer between the hub and rotor will push the rotor out far enough to create the clearance needed between the rotor and caliper mounting bracket.

The 14 inch spacer works great. No problems so far.
