Today we're going to take a look at the replacement shoe and lining for Dexter 12-1/4 inch x 4-inch left-hand self-adjusting electric brake assembly. This part is an application for the Dexter electric trailer brake assembly that has the cast backing plate for 10,000 pound axles, and it's part number 23-438. When they say the size 12-1/4 x 4, the 12-1/4 measurement would be when these are installed on your brake assembly. The measurement from this side all the way straight across to the other shoe will be 12-1/4 inches. Then the 4-inch, you put a ruler on it, is the width of the brake lining. This one happens to fit on the left-hand driver's side brake assembly. The way you can tell that is if you look at the size of the lining on the shoe, this one right here is going to be a shorter lining, and this one here is going to be a lot longer. The shorter lining will always be the primary shoe, and it'll face the front of the trailer.

The longer lining is the secondary shoe, and that goes on the rear of the brake assembly, faces the back of the trailer. Now this one, because it's specific for the left-hand driver's side, the reason that is is because it fits the self-adjusting brake assembly, and you can see the pulley here that the self-adjusting cable goes through. That will always be on the rear shoe. Now they do use an automotive grade friction material which is molded to the brake shoes. The lining is fully bonded, it's not riveted, so that gives the shoes longer life and more braking torque.
