Video Transcript for Dexter Axle Trailer Brakes 23-398 Review

Today we're gonna take a look at the Dexter seven inch left=hand driver side hydraulic drum brake assembly for 2500 pound axles. The hydraulic drum brake assemblies are designed for use with a serge type trailer brake actuator. These happen to be a uni-server design, which means it's a single plunger design. These are also manual adjustment breaks so they do require periodic manual adjustment. Right down here is the adjustment here where you'll turn the gear to adjust them in or out. Now, on the very back here, there is a access hole that they have in the backing plate that allows you to put your tool through there to adjust your brakes and, what's nice about this assembly, if you notice they have a plug in there. They do include these adjuster plugs, which will cover those access holes to keep dirt and grime out of your assembly and off the brake shoes. Now, this part does include the left-hand driver side break assembly and the mounting nuts to install it.

The dimensions on this is seven inches by one-and-three-quarter inches. The seven inches would be the diameter from this shoe to this shoe so, if we put a ruler on it, there's your seven inches. The one-and-three-quarter inches is the width of the pad on the shoes so there's your one-and-three-quarter inches. If you notice, it has the four bolts on the back so it does use a break mounting flange bolt pattern of four bolts. I've mentioned the four nuts are included to install it. This does require the use of a seven inch break drum.

The wheel size that'll fit on this assembly is the 10 inch, 12 inch and 13 inch and, again, it's inaudible 00:01:22 designed for axles rated up to 2500 pounds and this is a left-hand design and the way you can tell that . now on a new assembly it'll have this sticker there but, if that sticker wasn't there, the easiest way to tell is look at the length on the pad of the shoes. This pad goes from here to here. This one's from here to here. This is the shorter pad.

This is the longer pad. The shorter pad is always your primary shoe. That faces the front of the trailer so that tells you it goes this way. That means this is the left-hand driver side assembly but that should do it for the review on the Dexter seven inch left-hand driver side hydraulic drum break assembly for 2500 pound axles.

Everything worked great and still does. Thanks to the help from the etrailer Team

by:

I Purchased these brakes to use On a Kimball Hauler UTV, they worked great.

by:

Installed this on my 1995 Jayco 1206 tent trailer. Went on easily, and worked great. Had to file the edges of the shoes alittle as it was rubbing the drum but other than that was great. Once the drum is off just 4 bolts and disconnect the brake line, then adjust the pads. Easier than just changing pads alone.

by:

Drum brake assembly is exactly what I needed to replace some old and really worn brakes on a 1982 tent trailer. I was a bit skeptical as to if they would fit as there is no OEM parts out there but it turns out these were perfect!!

  • Replacing Hydraulic Brake with a 7 inch Electric Brake Assembly for 2K Axles
We do offer 7 inch electric brake assemblies that should work with your 7 inch hub/drums. They are the Electric Brake Assembly for 2K Axles for Left Side, item # 23-47 and the Electric Brake Assembly for 2K Axles for the Right Side, item # 23-48.

  • Can a 1985 Palamino Trailer be Switch From Hydraulic Brakes to Electric Brakes
If your spindle has wear, I recommend replacing it with a new spindle. The wear can become worse, not provide a good surface for the bearing/seal, and lead to other problems down the road. Better to take care of it ahead of time before it becomes a problem. I have included a link to our spindle main page for you to view. The outside diameter of a drum will be larger than the inside and larger than the measurement we use. A 7 inch diameter listed will have a 7 inch inside diameter. To...

  • Dimension Of Brake Mounting Flange For 7 Inch Electric Or Hydraulic Brakes
It sounds like you need the brake mounting flange that needs to be welded to the axle. You will need to know the diameter of your axle to make sure you choose the correct brake mounting flange. If you have a 1-3/4 inch round 2,000 lb axle, the brake flange you need is part # 4-34. This has a 4-bolt mounting pattern with a center hole that measures 1.64 inches diameter. This will work with 7 inch brake assemblies like part # 23-398 for hydraulic and part # 23-48 for electric brakes. If...

  • Hub and Drum and Bearing Kit to go with 7 x 1-3/4 Inch Hydraulic Brake Assembly 23-399
I believe that in the question you are referring to the 1.64 measurement is on the brake mounting flange, # 4-34. The center hole of the brake assembly, # 23-399, is larger than this and that is normal so it doesn't sound like you have anything to worry about for that. The matching left hand brake assembly is # 23-398. For a hub and drum assembly you can use # 8-276-5 which has a 4 on 4 bolt pattern and you would use bearing kit # BK1-150. For a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern you can use hub...

  • Can 7 Inch Hydraulic Trailer Brake Drums be Used with Electric Brakes
The Dexter hubs for hydraulic brakes # 23-399 and # 23-398 indicate that they are for use with hydraulic brakes only so you would not use them with electric brakes. The inside surface where a brake magnet would stick (called the armature surface) is not the correct design for electric brakes. In order to go to electric brakes you would also need to change the hubs. To keep the same bolt pattern you can use hub # 8-173-16UC3. And then you would need brake assembly # 23-48 for the right...

  • Installing Hydraulic Trailer Brakes on a Kristi Utility Trailer
There are two ways to go. Drum brakes and Disc brakes. To determine which assemblies will fit on your spindles we will need to know the inner and outer bearing and seal part numbers. We will also need the Brake Mounting Flange bolt pattern on the spindles and the bolt pattern and size of the wheels that are on your trailer. For the hydraulic actuator we will need the size of the trailer tongue where the actuator will mount. If you will get back to me with your choices and the needed information...

You can replace the Atwood hydraulic brake assembly with the Dexter hydraulic brake assembly as long as the mounting bolt pattern on the assembly matches. I went to the warehouse and measured the Right and left Dexter, 23-399 and 23-398, Hydraulic Brake Assemblies and they have a 2-7/8 inch on center four bolt pattern.

Thanks for the feedback, and I am glad that you are finding our website helpful! For your 1989 Trailex CT-7031 all aluminum trailer with the specifications that you provided there are three options for restoring or replacing the brakes for this trailer. The three options are similar to what you mentioned, and are: 1.Hydraulic Drum, which is the most cost effective. 2.Hydraulic Disc, which is more expensive, but provides better performance. 3.Electric drum, which is most cost effective...

  • Can Dexter Hydraulic Drum Brakes be Used in Place of Atwood 7 x 1-3/4 Inch Brakes
There should be no problem going with Dexter hydraulic drum brakes # 23-399 and # 23-398 in place of the Atwood brakes. You just have to make sure that you have the correct mounting pattern for the Dexter brakes. The Dexter brakes mount on a 4 bolt flange. The holes are 2-7/8 inches apart on center. The center hole is 1.64 inches in diameter. If this matches your flange then you can use the Dexter brakes.

  • Adding Brakes to Acme Car Dolly
We don't offer parts specific for the Acme tow dolly, but we have the parts you'd need to add either electric or hydraulic drum brakes. I'm assuming your tow dolly doesn't currently have brakes, and that your current hubs use the # L44649 as the inner and outer wheel bearing. If that's the case, to add electric brakes, you'd need the following parts: # 8-257-5UC3-EZ hub drum for EZ lube spindle or # 8-257-5UC3 for standard spindles # 23-47 and # 23-48 electric brake assemblies # H20044...
