Video Transcript for Redline Safety Chain S-Hook Review

Hi there, trailer owners. Today we're going to be taking a look at replacement S hooks from Redline. These are replacement S hooks are going to be a great option if you have a class one or two trailer that you're trying to pull. They are for lighter duty applications, like a small boat like we've got here. You can see older ones here. They get all rusted up.

And if they get real bad where you've got a catastrophic disconnect, you can actually spread these out. And once you've spread it out, it really needs to be replaced at that point, because once it spreads out, even if you try to squeeze it back, you've compromised the integrity of the metal at that point by bending it. So I highly recommend replacement so you can ensure you'll have the safe conditions that you need when you need it. These 11 32ths diameter S hooks are designed to work with three sixteenths chain, so that way it'll ensure that it will slide through the opening and fit. And you squeeze down and it'll match with its weight properties, as well.

It has a safe working load limit of 1,037 pounds and a minimum break strength of 3000 pounds. So, that's why it's good for that class one and two applications. If you've got one of these on each side, you've got enough brake strength here that will work with any class one or two trailer that you got behind it. And in most applications, these S hooks work out great. They really do the job.

They've got plenty of depth here, so when you go to put it on your trailer they stay in place, But there are a few trailer designs out there where your safety chain attachment hole is just a little bit awkward. It doesn't like to work very well with these. And you may go, hey, it's not really in there very far. Well, we do have these also available here at etrailer you can get from other manufacturers that have latches on them. So that way when you put it on there, that latch will ensure that it can't come off.

And that's really just for your certain trailers you might find that, hey, my specific hitch on my vehicle just doesn't like these. So, you can get those to ensure that they do stay in place. Additionally, if you have these already and you find, hey, my hitch just really doesn't like to hang onto these very well. You can get these from C.E. Smith here at etrailer. And what these will allow you to do is you can slide this on here. And then when you go to hook it onto your trailer, after you've hooked it onto your hitch, this guy will come around and you can latch it on there to ensure that it stays in place. And they're on there pretty stiff. So, they do give you a little bit of protection to ensure that they don't come off of there. You can see here why we're going to be replacing our S hook. This one here is spread out because of a breakaway event that occurred on this trailer. And when that happened, the vehicle and the trailer, they want to separate, but it's held together by the chain and the attachment here from our S hooks. So, it did keep everything together and safe, but it did spread this out because of that extra force. Here you can see the other one. When you're coming around a turn or something, it's not uncommon for one chain to hit first and do more of the work than the other chain. And that's what happened here. This one spread out and then the other one probably caught. And then that's why it didn't spread it out any further. So, we're gonna go ahead and get this one off of here. Our old one here is not bent. So this one's fine, we can keep this. It's really just surface rust on here. There's nothing really wrong with that one. To get your old one off, it is possible to bend this, but it takes an extreme amount of force. So, you can see that all that force we have between the vehicle and trailer only spread it that far. So, I usually recommend cutting them off. It's going to be a lot easier to use your grind wheel or a reciprocating blade to do so. You may have to do it right here on the trailer if your chains are welded directly to the trailer. But if you've got any kind of bolt on or quick connect, it'd be easier to take this chain inside and do it at the vise, which is what we're going to do. Ours is bolted on right here. So, we're going to go ahead and take this nut out, and then we'll head into the shop and get this replaced. So, we've gone ahead and placed it in our vise. We're just going to cut the end off here, so that way we can slide our chain off of there. At the other end, we just had it unbolted from the trailer. We'll bolt that back up once we get this new piece on. We're just gonna use a cutoff wheel here to get this off of here. So, now that we've got that separated from our chain we can just take our new one now. To install it, you'll simply slide it through the link of your chain. This is the same one that we just removed the old one from. And we're going to use our vise here. This is why it's easier if you can remove it from the trailer. If you're doing this outside on your trailer, you're probably going to have to pull your trailer inside to your garage or somewhere so you've got something that'll allow you to squeeze this tight enough. The vise is by far the best way, but you could use some channel locks as well. Slowly tighten those up and just squeeze, squeeze, squeeze, squeeze and eventually you can get it tightened. But that's the much more difficult way to do it. So we're just going to open this up now. Place our S hook inside. And then we'll just use that to secure it. And I always have to go just a little bit past, even though we're touching there. Just a smidge further. And that'll help keep it from springing back open on you. Because we can see it did spring back open a little bit, but that tiny little gap there is never going to be big enough for our chain to come off. So, now we're here back at our trailer. We've got it re-secured. At this point, we're ready to hook up our trailer to our vehicle and hit the road, get it back into service. And that completes our look at replacement S hooks from Redline..
