Note: Designed for flat towing only. Do not use to tow a trailer.

Many tow systems require some sort of hitch accessory to either raise or lower your tow bar so that it sits level. To determine if your setup needs an adapter, hook the tow bar up to your rv and towed car and measure to see how close to level it is. The "safe zone" for a motor-home-mounted tow bar ranges from 3 inches above level to 3 inches below. This high-low adapter can provide you with the necessary drop or rise to achieve a safe and level tow bar setup.

Video Transcript for Curt High-Low Tow Bar Adapter Review

Hey everybody, Ryan here at etrailer. Today we're going to be checking out the Curt Six Inch High-Low Adapter for Tow Bars. Whenever it comes to setting up a flat tow, it's really important that you set your tow bar up in a way to where it's going to ride level. That way it can do its job, you know, it can operate properly, it's just going to pull your vehicle that much better and not be so hard on all the different parts and pieces. And so it's really important to make sure that happens. And nine times outta 10, I mean we do a ton of flat tows and almost every single one of them end up requiring a high-low adapter like the Curt one here.

And that's because motor homes, generally big vehicles, right Their receiver tube, their trailer hitch sets up quite a bit higher than the attachment points on the car. So before we go any further, since there's, you know, a lot of high-low adapters available and tons of different sizes, drops and rises, I figured it'd be beneficial just to kind of go over and teach you how to even measure and figure out what high-low adapter you're going to need in the first place, if at all. What you're going to want to do is park your vehicles on level ground, you know, similar to how you're going to be towing them, right And you want to measure from the center of your motor home's hitch pin hole down to the ground. So in our case, we're right at 20 inches. And then you want to go to the attachment point on your base plate.

So from there down to the ground and ours is 11 inches. So that's a difference of nine. Now the safe zone that you want to be in is within three inches. So since we have a difference of nine, by using this high-low adapter in the drop position, drops it down six inches, that puts us right at that three inch mark and we're in good shape. You know, we're in the safe zone.

Generally speaking, the closer to zero you can get the better. But as long as you're within that realm, you'll be in pretty good shape. Especially on this vehicle. It's so low to the ground, honestly, you know, I could have went to the next size down high-low adapter and stayed in that threshold but for right now, I feel like it's almost better to have this front up an inch or two, you know, just to get us up a little bit higher off the ground. Depending on those measurements, you know, that's going to determine what size high-low adapter you're going to need.

So maybe you don't need a six inch, you know, there's all bunch of different sizes available, four inch, two inch, you know, some that drop down even further and so on. So regardless of your situation there's going to be a high-low adapter available that'll work for your particular application. And with this one, like I said, six inch drop, if you need to, which would probably be pretty rare, you could flip it over and have a six inch rise. And this is only suited for tow bars. You don't want to, you know, pull your regular trailer around with this thing. And you know, you also want to say, think about the weight capacities, how heavy your vehicle is. One of the things I like about this one, you get a lot of bang for your buck, right It has really good weight capacities. It's going to have a 7,500 pound gross trailer weight, your vehicle weight when you're flat towing. So that's going to cover a lot of your bases. If you have a full size truck or something you might want to look into kind of stepping up to the 10,000, I believe there's some 10,000 pound ones available that you can use for that. Now with that said, if you end up using a high-low adapter like this one, you are going to need to pick up an additional pin and clip because you're going to have an extra attachment point here. So you're going to need one that's five eights in diameter, so really standard. And something that you can always do too, especially if you plan on storing everything back here permanently, you can always grab some locking hitch pins that way it'll be secure. You won't have to worry about someone coming up and running off with your stuff. This high-low adapter is designed to work with motor homes that have two inch by two inch hitches. So really standard there. And as far as the tow bar, has to have that two inch by two inch shank. So again, super common. The majority is stuff out on the road is going to have that. So, you know, at the end of the day, there's really not a whole lot to this, but it is a really important part because without it, if your tow bar's, you know, way up here riding, you're not going to have a good towing experience. It's going to beat things up and wear out all your parts faster. So this is definitely the right way to do it to make sure your tow bar is in that safe range. So you know, the major takeaway at the end of the day, is make sure to take your measurements, figure out what high-low adapter you need and make sure you get that one. So if you're in that six inch range, this is definitely one to consider. And that'll finish up our look at of the Curt Six Inch High-Low Adapter for Tow Bars.

Quality hitch adapter, shipped quickly with UPS at no additional cost and at the lowest cost researched. Planned uses: Motorhome to toad leveling hitch connection and pickup truck front hitch to snow plow connection.

by:

There was a seven inch difference in height from the motor home to the towed vehicle. The Curt High-Low Adapter is just the right product to raise my tow bar. Now it is nearly level and well within the three inches high or low to meet the base plate on the towed vehicle. It is heavy with a nice finish and should give years of use.
