Can 5-Way Trailer Connector be Plugged Into a 4-Way Flat on a 2012 Honda CR-V

Question:

Can I plug 5 pole flat into this 4 pole flat? Do I need an adapter? I installed part which has 4 pole flat and picked up new pontoon boat trailer for 18foot boat and plugged in to its 5 pole flat I dont believe trailer has brakes. Fuses apparently blew and I lost the rear lights on the vehicle. Brought it to Honda service to correct.

You are able to plug a 5-Way flat trailer connector into a 4-Way flat but the 5th function on the trailer side will not work. The 5th function is usually for an electric reverse lockout on a surge coupler.

A surge coupler is used with hydraulic brakes. An electric reverse lockout will prevent the brakes from engaging when the vehicle is put in reverse allowing you to back up the trailer.

If your trailer does not have brakes at all then you will need to trace that 5th wire back (furthest from the ground pin) and see what its function actually is.

If that wire is not needed for anything then you can cut off the 5-Way on the trailer and install a 4-Way such as # HM48110.

If that 5th pin is for an electric reverse lockout and you want it to function then you will need a 4- to 5-Way adapter # 20036.
