Can a 4-Way Trailer Connector be Plugged Into a 5-Way Vehicle End Trailer Connector

Question:

I have recently purchased a boat trailer that requires a 5 pole connector. My 2010 F150 has a four pole connector which I use to pull another trailer. If I install a 20036 adapter will I still be able to plug the 4 pole connector into the 5 pole adapter? If not, what do you suggest? ie. I need to be able to use both trailers.

You will still be able to use the trailer with the 4-Way after installing the 4 to 5-Way adapter, # 20036. First, you could just remove the adapter if you wanted to and then plug in the 4-Way like normal while stowing the adapter in the truck. The extra wire in the adapter what just not be used.

Or, you could plug the 4-Way into the 5-Way end of the adapter. The extra pin on the end is for the extra function on the 5-Way, otherwise, the functions are the same for all the other pins. This means that it will function just fine being plugged into the 5-Way.

I have included a link to a video showing a typical installation of this adapter for you.

There are no brakes on the trailer

If there are no brakes on the trailer, you might not need a 5-way on your motorcycle. The 5th function on a motorcycle trailer is typically for electric trailer brakes so you don't get pushed down a hill or around a corner for example. Since you don't have brakes and you do have a 5-way on your trailer, I recommend tracing the 5th wire to see what it is connected to. Your 4 way should connect to your 5 way without issue to help you determine functions. It could be that your trailer is wired with turn signals separate from brake lights and if that is the case then we'd need to help you with a converter. If the 4 way doesn't help you determine your trailer functions, then I recommend using a jump wire and a 12v battery to connect your ground and test the power on the other pins for function. I've attached some articles to help you.

I would recommend getting a conversion kit for your bike so that you will still have breaking function on your trailer. You will need a break controller mounted on your bike to be able to set the correct pressure for your trailer. You will need to cut the connection on the bike and wire up the break controller. I will provide a link below of a time delayed brake controller.
