Options for Leveling a Nose High Fifth Wheel Trailer With Limited Bedrail to Overhang Clearance
Question:
pulling a fifth wheel camper and the ram 2500 is 4 inches taller than the 1500 my fifth wheel in the 1500 is at maximum height. I have approx. 7.5 inches of height between the fifth wheel and bed rails. I cannot lower but two inches on the fifth wheel adjustment to give me at least 5.5 inches from bed rail. do I get the rest by adjusting the king pin on the camper. are what do I need to do to make it right for the new truck

You have 2 options, the generally acceptable range for bed-rail to trailer overhang is 4-6 inches so you could lower your trailer nose by raising the pin box on the trailer, or lower the head of your hitch, but you will be right at the minimum height so you would have to be extra cautious on elevation changes while driving.
Or, you can raise the trailer to get the trailer to sit level without reducing clearances.
You can do this by moving the axles from being above the leaf springs to below the leaf springs.
The diameter of your trailer axle will determine the size of the parts that you will need to order. If your axle is 3 inches diameter, the Dexter Trailer Springs Over-Under Conversion Kit, # K71-385-00, would be a great choice and if your axle is 2-3/8 inch diameter you could use the Over-Under Kit, # K71-384-00. These kits can be installed without welding but the manufacturer strongly recommends having the new spring seat tacked in place on the other side of the trailer axle.
