Recommended Hitch for Towing 2 Horse Trailer with 1994 Volvo 850 Wagon

Question:

I have a Volvo 850 wagon,1994 and two horses. I want to tow a Brenderup horse trailer, touted to be the European answere to gas guzzling trucks. This trailer is designed to be towed with a car or mid SUV. Typically a Volvo. Inertia brakes. The trailer weighs 1950, the horses together about the same. Tounge weight 175 I believe. Sell me a hitch please.

Although I'd love to sell you a hitch, the only ones available for your 1994 Volvo 850 are Class II rated, which has a maximum capacity of 3500 lbs, which is about 400-500 lbs less than your trailer will weigh. And not to add insult to injury, but my research indicates the towing capacity of the Volvo 850 is a max of 3300 lbs, which again is well under the weight of your horses and trailer.

For the safety of you, your horses and other motorists, I can't recommend using that vehicle to tow that particular trailer. You would unfortunately need to find a vehicle with a higher tow rating or a lighter trailer.

If you can find a lighter trailer that would bring the weight being towed under the capacity of the vehicle and the hitch, I'd recommend the Curt Class II hitch, part # C12211. You would also need the following to complete your towing system:

If your trailer uses a 5-pole connector, you'll need the # 119177KIT wiring harness. For a 4-pole, use # C59236. You'll also need a drawbar, part # C45521 and either a 2 inch ball like # A-82 or a 1-7/8 inch ball, like part # A-80. The trailer should have the ball size stamped into the metal of the coupler.
