What is The Maximum Weight For Hitch Mounted Accessory With Receiver # 76143 On 2023 Tesla Model X?

Question:

I just bought a 2023 model X with a hitch attached that can only carry 120lbs of bikes. The tung weight capacity is 500lbs. stock. Can this hitch carry over 120lbs of bikes? Remember, rack weight capacity is different than tung weight capacity.

Your owners manual for your 2023 Tesla Model X specifically states when carrying any hitch mounted vertical load within 24" of the hitch receiver the maximum load is 120lbs. They do point out this is separate from the maximum tongue weight capacity of 500lbs with their 2" receiver installed and towing a trailer. They also have a bulletin point that says you should not attempt to install a carrier on any model X that is not equipped with their towing package. It seems like they are doing a lot of passing the blame for anything onto the owner. I recommend reaching out to Tesla directly for clarification on if you are able to use the aftermarket receiver and if so what they will certify the weight rating at. When Draw-Tite tested their Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver # 76143 they tested it to be able to support up to 750lbs of tongue weight and 5,000lbs of trailer weight.
