Is The 12 Volt Supply Line Required When Installing The Wiring Kit For a Trailer Brake Controller?
Question:
Hello, The brake controller installation videos include running a 12V power supply from battery to 7-pin trailer plug. Is this 12V power actually needed to operate trailer brakes or is it just for auxiliary power for interior lights, etc on a trailer? Thanks

Expert Reply:
The Wiring Kit # 5506 includes running a 12 volt power supply as this is needed to charge the battery on the Breakaway Kit # 3802346. Trailers with electric trailer brakes are required to have a functioning breakaway kit to stop the trailer shall it become disconnected from the tow vehicle. The 12-volt wire can also be used to power auxiliary lights or other 12 volt accessories in the trailer.
