Base Plates, Wiring Harness & Parts Needed to Flat Tow 2022 Ford Expedition

Question:

I need to get base plates and wire harness for a 2022 Expedition. Can you recommend the correct one? I can use either Roadmaster or Blue Ox type base plates. I have used Hopkins plug in wire harness in the past and would like to do something similar if possible. What would be the correct wire harness? RO44FR?

We can get your 2022 Ford Expedition set up to be flat towed with base plates and a wiring harness, and I'll go ahead and list out all the parts required, including a supplemental braking system in case you need those as well. I verified these fitments with the manufacturer for you, though please note the base plates don't fit the Timberline model of Expedition (there are no base plates for the Timberline model).

- Base Plate Kit: Blue Ox Base Plate Kit # BO84FR

- Wiring Kit: Roadmaster 4-Diode Universal Wiring Kit for Towed Vehicles # RM-152-1676-7

- Tow Bar: Blue Ox Ascent Non-Binding Tow Bar # BX4370

- Supplemental Braking System: Demco SBS Stay-IN-Play DUO Supplemental Braking System # DM86VR

- Towed Vehicle Battery Charge Wire Kit for Demco Supplemental Braking Systems # DM66VR

- Roadmaster Universal Stop Light Switch Kit # RM-751000

The Blue Ox base plates will give your Expedition a nice, clean look when you aren't towing it due to their removable arms, and I like the Ascent tow bar for a few reasons. It is really easy to use, connecting with arms that self-align (you just connect the tabs and drive your motorhome forward), and disconnecting by simply turning a handle on the bar to disengage. I also like its 7,500 lb capacity, which is perfect for a larger SUV like your Expedition, and it even comes with safety cables so you don't have to purchase those separately.

For the wiring harness, I verified with Roadmaster your Expedition does not need smart diodes like with the part number you mentioned, and there isn't a Hopkins-type harness, so a standard diode harness is what will work for you. The stop light switch is needed for the braking system to read the brake signal, and the charge wire kit ensures your battery is maintained when towing.

Finally, for the braking system, the Stay-IN-Play DUO is easily the best because it gives your Expedition braking proportional to that of your motorhome. So when you hit the brakes on your motorhome, your SUV is going to get the same amount of braking power, resulting in much smoother braking than other systems, which is especially beneficial for larger SUVs to ensure they don't push or pull your motorhome when being towed.
