Finding The Cold Side Of The Brake Light Switch In A 2024 Toyota Highlander XLE
Question:
Hello, I am installing a Tow-Pro Liberty brake controller on my 2024 Toyota Highlander XLE AWD. I am using the Universal Pig-Tail wiring harness with the brake controller. I was able to connect the Blue, Black and White wires. But I am having difficulties determining how to connect the Red wire. I know the Red wire needs to be connect to the brake light trigger. I have found the brake light switch, it has a connector with seven wires I have attached a picture. Which wire is the brake light trigger wire? Or, do you have any other details on how the red wire should be connected to my Highlander. Thanks for any assistance, Ezra.

Hey Ezra,
In order to determine which wire is the cold side of the brake light switch you'll need to test the wires with a hook & probe tester # PTW2993 to see which wire has power only when the brake pedal is depressed. You could also install the Roadmaster Universal Stop Light Switch Kit # RM-751000 to simulate the signal and avoid damaging the thin gauge wires of the brake light switch. You would wire the output of this switch to the red wire of your brake controller harness.
If you didn't already pick out the location for your control button then I recommend using part # RED48FR if you have a square shaped blank in your dash for an easier installation.
