How do I Get My Trailer Level when Using a Reese Weight Distribution Hitch on My 2021 Ford F-150?
Question:
HI, I have a new Ford F-150 XLT 4x4 Off road. My travel trailer is a 2021 Rockwood Mini Lite 2511s - GVWR 6900 lbs, Tongue weight is 700 to 1000 depending. My hitch is a Reese Dual Cam rated 12000/1200. I like this hitch as it controls the trailer nicely no sway or tail wagging. However, I have tried every, and I mean every, possible configuration and can NOT get trailer level with truck front returned to acceptable height. Its either one or the other. I adjust ball height to level trailer and then I cant get enough tension on bars to bring truck front down. I tilt the head to get more tension on bars and then the trailer is too low. I have tried every hole on the shank in both rise and position. This truck compared to my previous Chevy Silverado 1500, is very difficult when it comes to this hitch setup. Hove you encountered this with F150s and if so, what changes have worked? Have people had success with different shanks than the stock 6 hole 2inch ? Thank you in advance for any help.

When trying to determine leveling for a trailer and the tow vehicle, the connection should be within 1-1/2 inches of height. As long as you are within this height, it will be safe to travel.
If the connection is way off, the best bet is to use trailer suspension on the vehicle or on the trailer itself. For example, on your 2021 Ford F-150, if you install air bags like the Firestone Ride-Rite Air Helper Springs - Double Convoluted - Rear Axle # F2582, this will add height to your tow vehicle. It is important to note that the # F2582 does not work if you have Continuous Controlled Damping suspension. Also, if you do end up going with the Ride Rites, I recommend measuring to make sure that the distance from the outside of the frame to the inside of the tire is be at least 8".
Also, another option is to purchase a different drop hitch. For example, the Gen-Y Phantom X Adjustable Ball Mount # GY59VR provides you with a 10" maximum rise and drop. I went ahead and linked a product page that shows all of our adjustable ball mounts.
