Firestone Ride-Rite Air Spring Basics

Firestone Ride-Rite springs are designed to increase safety and reduce the strain on your truck when you are hauling heavy loads or towing a heavy trailer. The springs partner with your existing rear suspension system to help keep your truck level, maintain even load distribution, and increase stability. Hauling heavy loads or towing a heavy trailer can make the rear of your truck sag and the front end rise. This puts more strain on your rear axle and reduces contact between your front tires and the road, causing problems with braking, steering control, and traction. By adding air springs to your rear suspension, you can help to level your truck and improve braking and handling. The air springs also help to level your headlight beams and reduce wear on your tires.

Adjustable Air Pressure

Firestone Ride-Rite air spring airline installation

The air pressure in the Ride-Rite springs can be adjusted manually, side to side, to compensate for off-center loads. A centered load improves the stability of your truck by reducing body roll. The air springs will also help to absorb road shock and soften contact between your axle and frame. This prevents bottoming out, thus improving ride comfort. Route the air line tubing for the springs to your truck's bumper to provide easy access to the manual inflation valves.

Air Spring Construction

Firestone Ride-Rite air spring components

Firestone's double-convoluted Ride-Rite air springs are designed to give you maximum load support and enhance the performance and ride comfort of your truck. The rubber springs provide cushioning between your suspension components and operate at up to 100 psi. The springs have four layers of reinforced rubber to ensure durability and enhance load support. A braided wire girdle creates the double-convoluted shape of each air spring, increasing the burst pressure of the spring. The rubber springs are attached to corrosion-resistant metal end plates with a time-proven, rolled crimp seal that keeps the bags securely anchored.

Air Spring Installation

Each Ride-Rite kit includes custom-fit brackets that connect to your axle and frame. The brackets provide the mounting points for the air springs. No drilling is required for installation.

It happy. Poor packaging allowed parts to bang around in shipping and paint and pieces of metal to flake off on the larger pieces.

I installed these in about 2 hours the night before my wife and I were heading out to Sioux Falls, SD with our 30 foot travel trailer. I aired them up to about 38 P.S.I. and away we went. They worked flawlessly. I love them. I only used one air valve to air them up with a T connector.

by:

The fittings used to connect the airline to the airbag and the air-fill fitting are junk. You can buy much higher quality fittings at your local NAPA store and they don't leak. Firestone will replace the fittings for free but only after you remove the airbag and place it in a bucket of water to prove that it's actually leaking. Major pain in the ass. Firestone will not reimburse you for the time you have to spend proving to them that their fittings are garbage. I would definitely not recommend buying airbags from Firestone.

2021 Ford F-150

Works really well with my heavy travel trailer (9,500 lbs). I was able to pretty much eliminate the sag and when combined with my WDH everything towed very well.
Great kit, easy to install, heavy duty. Only reason for 4 stars is even at 5 lbs they make the ride a little bouncy unloaded. I really suspect it’s because the factory shocks are junk and can’t control the suspension motion well enough but that’s just a guess lol.
Overall- can’t go wrong if you need to haul or tow anything relatively heavy and retain your stability and level stance.

by:

Installed as described in the Video on a f-150 2019 Lariat, max tow package 4x4. I have not loaded up the bed and towed yet so they are set to 5 psi and are riding fine. I have used the ride rites on other trucks and very happy with them. Now note you need to monitor them when not loaded as the should be kept at 5 psi unloaded.

I also bought the wheel liners and mud flaps. Wheel liners needed to be cut so they would not run on the air bags.

Great, I did tow with my TT, truck was almost at max GVWR. Airbags were set to about 50psi to return factory rate. The ride was very good and controlled

2019 Ford F-150

This is my 2nd purchase of this system . 1st time for my 2013 Ford F-150 Limited , easy to install ,instructions were great and they worked awesome for pulling my car trailers and my travel trailer with the bed loaded with firewood and camping equipment. This time I purchased it for my 2019 Ford F-150 Limited. The kit was complete and as before easy to install. I took my time to route the air lines in the frame to hide them and used provided protectors so no chafing . I purchased the tee fitting to conect 2 lines into 1 and used the mounting bracket . I would highly recommend this product to enhance your trucks rear suspension .

by:

The kit was missing the air hose when received. Contacted etrailer and they shipped missing hose as soon as it was available. Installed kit on 2019 F150 to solve sagging rear suspension problem when towing my camper. I love being able to adjust the ride height on either side. It’s have no leaks after approximately 1 year and towing the trailer is much better.

by:

Just what I needed for pulling new trailer. Installation not that hard but would have been easier with two people. Just took a little longer.

by:

Very easy to install and does a fantastic job when pulling my 5th wheel trailer. I like a more firm ride when pulling, so I run 80psi. I have an F150 and can pull my trailers just fine.

Great service from etrailer too. Very knowledgeable.

by:

Delivered on time today. I’ll let you know how the installation goes.

by:

Relatively easy install. Definitely made an improvement when towing the camper. Helps level the truck and improves trailer control.

by:

Website and Live Chat told me these would work on my new truck. Videos showed easy installation. They would not fit without drilling the frame, something not included in instructions or videos. Bottom-line, not a fit per statements, instructions, videos. Had to pay a restocking fee to send them back. Have purchased other items in the past, very happy but have not purchased anything since the hassle a year ago with these springs. To be clear - the air springs looked great and well built. Imagine they would do the job. My issue is with the error of published statements and advice from Live Chat that they were a match to my truck. The error cost me $$$
I shared photos a year ago with customer service, deleted since.

2016 Ford F-150

I recently installed the Firestone Ride Rite air helper springs model # 2582 on my 2016 F150 Supercrew 4x4. The install was straight forward. I watched a couple of the etrailer installation videos before I installed the Ride Rites. I found the videos very helpful. I installed the Ride Rites on my truck in my driveway on jack stands. I think it took me about 2 to 3 hours. The driver side took longer to install because the hard brake lines block access to the hole in the frame. It also took me a little while to choose the best route for the air lines. I am going to be installing the Air Lift WirelessOne system very soon to use with the Ride Rites. I am very happy with how the Ride Rite system turned out.

2016 Ford F-150

Works with lift kits, i have 6inch block under spring and was Easy to install and no air leaks so far. I used basic hand tools..14 & 15 mm box wench and 3/8 drive with 14mm & 15 mm deepwell sockets. Took 3 hours, biggest chore was the spring shackle bolts took forever with hand ratchet. Most frustrating part was frame bolt brackets...actually lost one inside frame...i recommend making them with longer handles also marking the upper frame mounts left or right. Would give a 5 but havent had a chance to test under load yet.

After a year of use I am still very impressed with the reliability and functionality of these bags. The Bluetooth compatibility of the compressor unit which allows the user to increase or decrease pressure via the phone app is great, no wiring to run into the cab, or mounting a control head under the dashboard is fantastic. Run these at 10psi for everyday driving with no noticeable change in the ride of the truck. I only have to air them up to 40psi to stiffen the suspension perfectly when towing my 34’ travel trailer. Would recommend this product within it hesitation!

This is the second set of these I have had. I purchased a new truck and I am not disappointed. Installed the first set my self in an afternoon, also installed the compressor as well and was impressed with the quality of the materials and the fitment. Had this installed by the hot rod shop up the street, who recommended the product when we talked previously. He loves the Bluetooth phone app for the compressor and has started to recommend it to his other customers. Would highly recommend this product and your company to anyone considering the purchase of a like product.

2018 Ford F-150

I had to use a video to make sure I understood everything to do on the install after I studied the instructions. But I do that for about everything i work on. My only negative comment is, no one tells you jacking instructions and to use jack stands to hold up your vehicle to free up the axal. The install was very easy. Putting the tires back on was the hardest part. Just pay attention and go slow. I would recomend this to everyone that asks.

by:

Overall, the product is of very good quality. Everything was solid in construction. Thankfully, the "how to" videos on Etrailer and youtube were available to show installation, they were extremely helpful to view beforehand.
The paper instructions supplied need improvement. Part numbers in the drawings for each part and orientation more explicit for Left and Right side definitions
The cardboard box this was shipped in was almost broken and sagging on the bottom. At least two or 3 reinforced tapes should be used to prevent the bottom from blowing out. This is quite a heavy package. Still all in all, this is a great product and Etrailer is awesome in the way they respond quickly and track the shipments and orders. THanks!

2019 F150 Lariet
Has tow options but
not tow package springs. Therefore rated at 10,000 max.
I bought the air system because i only pull a RV trailer a dozen times a year and dont want my truck riding hard the rest of the year.
Installed these in roughly 90 minutes….takes as much time threading the air line as it doe to install the springs. I didnt go with a compressor system because it was something i thought to add later. I use a bicycle pump and it takes less than a minute to air and holds the pressure indefinitely. Havent lost any air and check it probably every 2-3 months. I wont be buying a compressor!
The difference in towing is impressive. I pull a 30’ trailer weighing roughly 8,000 and the difference with springs and without is huge. I take a tape measure and measure the bumper before and then hook the trailer and air back to same height.as without. In my case this is 40psi. The truck handle the trailer like its not even there. I bought the Firestone version because i know other people that have them and no one has had issues. I looked at lots of different options and this is the best to keep your truck performing the same with a trailer as without…just add air.

Volvo Cross Country

Very happy with this product. I used it on a 7,000 mile cross country travel trailer trip to level my trailer to prevent sway. Coupled with my WD hitch, sway was almost non-existent. As an example, I noticed a slight difference in towing from an almost empty TV gas and a full tank. Some fine tuning with my air pump resolved that. Also, a little extra tongue weight and drop was remedied with increasing air in the bags.

The only negative was the bags loses some air when not under extra weight. I had my mechanic check for a leak but none was found so he claimed it must be thru the pump. not a deal breaker.

by:

Great system, on 2020 f150 3.5 ecoboost. Eliminates light steering when loaded, levels out load perfectly.
Easy install, no leaks. Love these air bags. etrailer has great pricing, fast shipping and excellent support.

Still works great, pulled RV thousands of miles and keeps trucks amd RV much more stable.

by:

I have owned these for about a year now and they have performed great. I installed them to accommodate the weight of some storage and gear I added in the truck bed. They have performed great and have fixed the issue I had with my headlights aiming to the sky with a load in the back. Adjusting the pressure is not difficult, but I would strongly recommend getting the t-fitting for the air lines to make it a little less tedious.

Installation was pretty easy as long as you pay close attention to the orientation of the brackets. Overall, I am very satisfied with these and wish I had gotten them sooner.

Still going strong 2 years later!

by:

These were easy to install and work great for adding additional support while carrying out atv and towing the camper.

by:

Took my time and installed ride rite air helper springs and am excited to head to the campsite a couple days drive away. We are pulling a 29’ bumper pull and I’m hoping that the air springs help control the sway!

  • Recommended Suspension Enhancement For 2020 Ford F-150 With 1,200 lb Trailer Tongue Weight
I recommend the Firestone Ride-Rite Air Helper Springs - Double Convoluted part # F2582 for the 2020 Ford F-150 towing the travel trailer with 1,200 lb tongue weight. The Firestone Helper Springs are rated for 4,800 lbs and will help to reduce the rear sag on the truck with their 5 PSI to 100 PSI adjustability. The bags are designed with a strong 4 layer construction to avoid being punctured compared to other brands that are 2 layers of rubber. They also have a rolled crimp seal that keeps...

Yes, you can lift the truck by the frame with the Firestone Ride-Rite Air Helper Springs part # F2582 installed on a 2018 Ford F-150. It says in the manual this is permitted but you must first release the air pressure from the bags. The crimp rolled design they use on the air bags is very strong and can support the weight of the axle.

  • Can Airbags be Used with a Weight Distribution System on a 2018 Ford F-150
Yes, airbags should help to level the truck even further which will then bring down the front end to stock height or very close. A weight distribution system like your Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System part # EQ37100ET is not necessarily designed to completely level the vehicle, it is designed to help you gain back around half of what you lost while coupled to the trailer which is why suspension enhancements like airbags are sometimes used in unison with a weight distribution system.
