Trailer Wiring Harness Stopped Working On a 2005 Nissan Xterra
Question:
I have a 2005 Xterra and In 2008 I had a professional install a tow package and everything worked 100. This year I went to hook up to my boat and I have no power at my plug tested with a multimeter, trailer light tester, quickie circuit tester and 2nd trailer. I cleaned the 4-prong flat plug and still nothing. I unplugged that harness from underneath the vehicle and cleaned the connections. Now I can get power but only for the passenger side blinker and brake lights. All fuses have been checked and are good. Any ideas on what could be the issue or where to check next?

Since you have cleaned the connection where the harness plugs in under the vehicle and that made some of the functions start working then that leads me to believe that there is additional dirt and corrosion in that area causing it not to work properly. Corrosion could have become bad enough to necessitate adding a new factory end harness (if the wiring inside is compromised).
For that you would have to visit a Nissan dealer. If you do that, use some dielectric grease, # 11755, between the connections to help prevent corrosion. If you use a circuit tester like # PTW2993 to test the pins on that factory connector you can determine if there is anything wrong with the factory harness. If not all the functions work, it could also be a bad relay. Use the owner's manual to find the relay locations and if any need replaced, we offer # C57000 which is the 3 relays used to power the tow package wiring.
The other option would be to use a hardwire harness, # C59496, which taps into the vehicle tail light wiring. This will bypass the factory connector and provide the basic lighting functions.
You might also ask the place that did the installation to see if they warranty their work.
