Recommended Fixed 5th Wheel Hitch For A 2022 GMC Sierra 2500 With A Short Bed

Question:

I have a new 2022 GMC Sierra 2500 Crew cab, standard Bed. Specs say this is a 6 9 bed. I am a proud owner of a new Grand Design 2022 303 RLS 5th. Wheel. I have not picked it up yet and need some help. What is the best Hitch for me and will I have any clearance issues on turns. I do not want a Slider. Thanks for your support

The best 5th wheel hitch for your 2022 GMC Sierra 2500 with the short/standard bed will depend on if you have the factory pucks in the bed or not. If you don't, the Reese M5 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch - Single Jaw - 20,000 lbs # RP30928 and Rail Kit # RP30035-522 would be a great option.

Now if you do have the factory pucks in your bed, I highly recommend the B&W Companion OEM 5th Wheel Hitch # BWRVK3715. This is American made and also rated up to 25,000 pounds. This will also secure into the factory pucks quickly and easily. If you have the pucks, go with this one. It is a little more expensive, but B&W hitches are built to last and I have never had an issue with one.

With all that being said, both of these are fixed hitches and can be used in the short/standard bed, but the clearance will not be enough to make tight turns. Typically when using a fixed 5th wheel hitch in a bed that is shorter than 8 feet, you will also need a rotating king pin, like the Reese # RP34FR as an example. This moves the pivoting point back from the hitch, which does give you a lot better clearance, but you will also need something like the Sidewinder Wedge Kit for B&W # RP74FR to lock the king pin in place and allow it to pivot properly. For the Reese option you'd want Wedge # RP44FR.

As a side note, you can also go with the Demco Hijacker Autoslide 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch # DM8550035 and # DM6333 puck adapter if you have the factory pucks, or the Demco Hijacker Autoslide 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch # DM8550037 and # DR37FR under-bed system if you do not have the pucks. This is a 21,000 pound capacity sliding hitch, but it is not one that you need to get out and operate. It gets to a certain point when turning and will actually slide by itself. This is an expensive option, but it is also American made and very easy to use.
