Ram Trailer Tow Prep Package
Ram offers an underbed mounting system for fifth-wheel hitches as an option on new trucks starting in 2013. This system is designed for maximum convenience and versatility. The entire mounting system is located underneath your truck bed - no parts extend above it. The system will let you hook up a fifth-wheel hitch or a gooseneck ball.
The underbed mounts give you full access to your truck bed when you're not towing. When you want to tow, you install a hitch that fits into the pucks in the bed, or you can get an adapter that fits into the pucks and has slots to fit any standard fifth-wheel hitch.
Fifth-Wheel Adapters and Hitches
To install most industry standard fifth-wheel hitches available at etrailer.com on your Ram truck with factory tow prep package, you'll need to install part number RP30154 (rails), pictured above left. This part removes easily so you can still have a clutter-free bed when you're not towing. Hitches that fit directly to the factory mounts without the need for a separate adapter are available (pictured above right). Refer to the following table to find out more about these hitches.

A gooseneck ball that fits the Ram underbed mounting system is available. See part number RP30140, pictured above, for a gooseneck ball that comes with 2 safety chain hookups, a plug for the gooseneck ball hole, and a carry bag.

Have a 2019 dodge ram 5th puck set up. Replace the bed with a flat bed and the receiver pucks will not reach the receiver hole underneath. Do they make longer receiver pucks to replace the ones they send with it. Thanks

Similar question to William K. I just bought a 2012 ram 2500 Power Wagon. It too has aftermarket factory puck style prep kit installed. I tow goosenecks and shopping to see if there is an adaptor or converter that utilizes the puck style locks. My truck does not have gooseneck ball installed and I have not verified if it has the mounting brackets for the ball under the bed. I believe it only has the fifth wheel puck locks.

It is probably aftermarket. The OEM prep kits for 5th wheels(puck system) didn't start rolling out until 2013.

@StanK Dodge never changed the design or shape of their puck system. If you used the B&W hitch in your 2017 Ram, then it will fit in a 2020 Ram.

I have a 2021 Ram 2500 with a factory installed puck system and a Ram m20 fifth wheel. My trailer is a 37' 2021 Flag staff classic. With a turning point pin box. It pulls great ,the issues I'm having is when I'm making sharp turns. The fifth wheel has some side to side play causing the pinbox which is locked to the fifth wheel to shift hard to the left or right. Is there anything I can do to stop this? Thanks.

Do you have any suspension enhancement on your truck and 5th wheel? How many miles are on the 5th wheel? Are these turns on flat level surfaces? Just need to make sure your not "off-roading" lol.

My truck does have air bags. The fifth wheel is stationary no slide on it no I have not been offloading lol. I have towed with the fifth wheel about four trips proximately 18 hours. Most of the towing is on flat ground and the shifting I get is when I’m making a sharp turn.

Most 5th wheel hitches can be locked out from rotating so a Sidewinder can be used. Do you already have a Sidewinder - or do you neeed a recomendation for a fit? If so we will need the pin box number. This is typically a 4 digit number stickered on your current pin box flanges or pin box. Could be like 1621, 1716, 1116, or other.
You'd then need to use a fixed hitch like the Reese part # RP30047 with the wedge # SWW-03 plus a fifth wheel rail install kit part # RP50054-58 and you'd be set.

I recently bought a 2018 2500 ram with 6-4 bed and factory gooseneck and 5th wheel prep. It had a ball in the gooseneck center hole. I didnt know till later it was rusted in. I have given it a couple of soakings with penetrating oil spray. Do you have any suggestions for removing it ?

@HankM if you slide under the truck you may be able to see the cap at the botttom of the gooseneck opening. I would try some PB Blaster in there. I realise it will just want to run out. So, lots of penetrating oil and light hammering until it comes loose.

Hi there...I have a 2015 Ram 2500 with the 3 hole puck system installed in the 6'4" box. I am looking to tow a 2013 Forest River Rockwood ultra lite. 29' It has a Reese Revolution hitch pin. I would like to try and keep the truck bed free when not towing but still utilize the Revolution. I've looked at the Demco Recon but I would have to lock out the Reese and I'm not sure what limitations that presents for turning, Any suggestions and help would be appreciated.

@RickW basically, in any set up you cannot have two pivot points. You would have to lock one of them out. To keep the advantage of the Revolution, your in-bed hitch will have to be locked. However the Recon cannot be used with a rotating pin box. This leaves more traditional fifth wheel hitches which are not as easily removed when not towing.
Quick question first. The puck systems have 5 holes. Is this a typo or maybe you have a gooseneck ball and two chain hooks? Please let me know.

@LesD Thans Les. I've learning more everyday. It wasn't a typo...the previous owner had a gooseneck ball installed by Chrysler, so they are in the correct puck position. I just came back from the dealership and have ordered the prep kit. They are going to install the two forward anchor points. So I can add a hitch designed for the Ram puck system.

@DavidE To attach you older Reese 24K fifth wheel hitch to your 2020 RAM 2500 truck with the factory puck system, you would use the Reese # RP30154 Rail adapter which is rated for 25K lbs.

@AnitaL It sounds like you are getting rid of your Curt A20 and you want to install a B&W RVK3500, connecting it to your Ram truck by a turnover ball. For your B&W you would use the B&W # BWGNXA2005 if your truck is equiped properly for a gooseball connection.

@JeffS It sounds like you have the Curt Q24, part # BWGNXA2005, fixed position, fifth wheel hitch designed for RAM trucks with the factory towing prep system. In this sort of situation we would normally recommend a product like the Sidewinder replacement pin box that moves the pivot point about 20 inches, however, you cannot use those types of pin boxes with a Curt hitch.
You will need a Curt # C16022 adapter rails, and Curt # C16570 Tube Slider. This will (when released) move your pivot point back 12 inches.
You will still need to measure to see if this extra foot will give you the clearance you need at your truck cab.
(A + B) - C = Clearance
A = Distance from the fifth wheel jaw center to the truck cab
B = Offset used (slider clearance or Sidewinder offset)
C = Width of the nose of the trailer divided by 2.
You really want a minimum of 4 inches of clearance to be on the safe side.

There is not an aftermarket system I am aware of that has the same outline as the Ram OEM underbed system. The only aftermarket underbed system we currently have for the 2018 Ram 2500 is the B&W Turnoverball Gooseneck Hitch # BWGNRK1384-5W with the Companion 5th Wheel Hitch # BWRVK3400-5W. If you'd really rather use the OEM system, you'll want to reach out to your dealership to see if it can be installed on your truck.

I recently purchased 2020Ram 3500.I just found out from the dealer all the 2500-3500 Rams come prepped on the frame to install a puck system or 5th wheel , so all you have to do measure and drill holes in box floor and install parts under floor. The Ram Puck part number is 82215837AC. It is complete with trim rings and plugs when not using. Same as if you ordered the truck that way.

The only way that you'll be able to install something like the puck system for use with an autosliding hitch is if you are able to find the OEM puck system for your Ram and have it installed. This would then allow you to use the adapter # DM6099 for the autoslide. Aside from this you can install the base rails # DM8552025-71 for use with the autoslide. The only underbed kit that is available for your setup (aside from an OEM package) is the B&W gooseneck with their Companion hitch but that isn't compatible with an autoslider.

Recently, I purchased a 2021 Ram Laramie 2500. I am looking to tow a 5th wheel but do not have a payload capacity of 2092lbs. The pin weight of the trailer is 1234lbs. With the weight of the 5th wheel hitch weighing 400 to 500 lbs installed I am pushing the limit of the payload capacity. My question is would having this gooseneck box work for me to save weight? Or do you have any other suggestions other than purchasing a new truck? Thank you for your time.

If you check in your owner's manual you should see that the max tongue (or pin) weight of a 5th wheel trailer for your pickup is actually higher than the payload rating. This is because a payload will sit on the truck bed while the 5th wheel pin weight is transferred directly to the truck frame.

The only kind of adapter we have for a 3-hole OEM package is for the Nissan pickups. Aside from that it sounds like you will either need to remove your current system and install something else, or you can use an adapter like the part # CAB-C5GX1216 or # DM8550045-5W. This allows you to utilize a gooseneck hitch ball to tow your 5th wheel trailer.

I currently have a 2019 Ram 3500 2WD Tradesman without puck system. I have the Blue Ox Fifth Wheel Hitch on rails. Looking at trading in for a 2015 Ram 3500 Laramie 4WD with puck system and factory air suspension. What do you suggest for me to do to be able to put the Blue Ox in the 2015. Is the adapter a good option and never had air suspension so don’t know if it comes into play at all. Thanks for your response.

The closest thing we have to the OEM prep kit is the B&W Gooseneck Hitch # BWGNRK1320 which can then be paired with the Companion # BWRVK3500. This means that you can remove the 5th wheel hitch when you aren't towing and you'll have a clear bed for hauling similar to what you'd have with an OEM prep kit.

To install an OEM prep package, you would have to speak with your dealer. However, we do have what's needed to install a 5th wheel on your 2015 Ram 2500 without the prep package. Which one you choose will depend on the size of your bed. I've linked to lists for both the 6-1/2' bed and the 8' bed.

@JasonK Oh, sorry for not seeing that part. You are correct that we don't have anything for the RamBoxes. Your best bet is to speak with your dealer and see what can be done about adding the prep package. They may be able to do something with the RamBox since aftermarket solutions are very rare for them.

It looks like the same kits fit a 2014 Ram 2500 and a 2021 Ram 2500 so if it's aftermarket then it should work, you'll just need new hardware since it isn't supposed to be torqued down twice. If you have the OEM puck system then I would like to think that it would work but I'm not sure what that looks like so you might need to reach out to a dealer for that info.

The Reese Goosebox is a really neat alternative to a standard pin box. Really the only thing that you want to make sure of is that you have enough turning clearance. A lot of people really like using the gooseneck setup simply because it can be easier to hook up plus you don't have to deal with moving around and storing a hefty 5th wheel hitch.

@ElC The Goosebox is definitely reliable. The argument for a 5th wheel hitch is that it has more cushioning to help with any chucking or jarring, but I've also heard other people say they prefer the ride quality of a gooseneck hitch setup over 5th wheel. It all depends on the user experience but from what I've heard about the Goosebox people really like it.

(Update - see below comment) As long as your truck doesn't have the factory air suspension system then I recommend going with the B&W Gooseneck Hitch # BWGNRK1319-5W along with the Companion # BWRVK3400-5W 5th wheel hitch. This gives you plenty of weight capacity to work with, plus it means that you will have a completely free truck bed when you aren't towing.

What year and model Dodge Ram are you looking at and what type of rails does your Hijacker fit? If your SL16 number means that it is the vertical rails (that run front to back of the truck bed) then there unfortunately isn't anything that will make it compatible. If it's the standard horizontal mounting then there is potential for an adapter if you can provide the above info.

The head unit of the Companion # BWRVK3400-5W can be used with a base that fits the puck system for your specific truck, yes. If you can let me know the year/make/model of your pickup I can let you know what base matches. This hitch alone will note fit as-is.

@Mike The only way that we know of there you can pull a 5th wheel trailer on a Ram pickup with the RamBox setup is if your pin box is the Sidewinder pin box. Reason being that the box part of the pin box stays stationary so it won't hit the RamBox. I hate to be the bearer of bad news but I think you're going to need to either look for a gooseneck trailer that has been converter to a camper, or you'll need to use a truck with the 4 point system (whether that means a new truck or getting that installed on your current truck). The Anderson hitch doesn't move the pivot point high enough and so your pin box would still come into contact with the RamBox setup on your truck when turning. There may be a few exceptions out there with some different pin box configurations but from all of the research we have done it won't work unfortunately.

I'm guessing your Tradesman is a 2500/3500? If that's the case then yes, you can use the Adapter # RP30154 to connect your 5th wheel hitch to the puck system on your truck. If you have the 1500 model then we currently don't have anything that would fit a puck system (if it's available for that model).

You can reuse the head of your Demco 5th wheel hitch but you will need to swap out the saddle and side plates to parts # DM6023 and # DM6060. This will then allow you to use the Rail Adapter # DM6099 to fit your puck system. In all honesty by the time you're done swapping out parts you'll be spending about the same amount as you would for a new hitch so in that case I recommend selling yours and getting the Reese 20K # RP30918 instead.

We do have an underbed system but right now none of the aftermarket manufacturers have a puck prep package available for your 2020 Ram 3500. For your application you can use the B&W Gooseneck Hitch # BWGNRK1320-5W and then use the Companion 5th wheel hitch. Use the slider # BWRVK3400-5W if you have a short bed or the stationary # BWRVK3500-5W if you have a long bed.

The closest thing to a puck system available aftermarket for your 2021 Ram 1500 is the B&W Gooseneck # BWGNRK1319-5W which you can pair with the Companion # BWRVK3400-5W. Aside from this you'll need to look into any OEM puck system at this point in time although I'm sure some more aftermarket options will be available in the near future.

I have a 2028 Ram 3500 Dually and was wondering if anybody made non-plastic puck covers for when the hitch is not installed? Hoping for an aluminum billet type puck cover. Thank you in advance.

I bought the Demco 6099 adapter for my 2020 Ram. Poor engineering. I wish I would have spent the extra on the Reese. If I ever get the Demco to fit my Ram I sure hope the hitch fits.

You have a 2500 or 3500 correct? If you're having trouble fitting the adapter to your truck then you might need to remove the shims like the instructions state at the very end.

It is a 2500 and I was wrong about the instructions. It is on there about the shims. I will try that tonight. The problem seems to be the width. I should mention too that one bolt hole has a burr and will not accept a bolt so I'll have to tap that out.

@JonG what I have determined is either the pucks on my Ram are off a tad or the hitch is. I'm not sure which yet. It was no help removing the shims. Thebfront fits good but the rear is off by about 1/8 inch.

It's the hitch. The front pegs are 39" center to center same as the pucks.
Rear pegs are 38 7/8

@KenD I'm glad you were able to figure out why it wasn't fitting properly. That sounds like something that falls under the warranty so I'd pursue that. I have a RBW xtreme slider lil rocker 5th wheel that I am trying to install in a 2015 Ram 2500 that is 6 1/2 ft bed with OEM pre package set up. Which installation kit will work with this hitch?

We have the Demco Adapter # DM6099 which might work but you'll need to confirm on your end that your RBW Lil' Rocker has mounting points that are either 20-1/2" or 29" apart from each other (side-to-side). I know some of the RBW 5th wheel hitches used unique mounting methods but I'm not sure which models.

I have a 2019 Ram 3500 , Cummins powered, 74 inches when i measure the inside of the box. No under bed rails are on the truck, i need this to keep the box free and clear. Is a option available out there to accomplish this ? I quite simply do not want anything obstructive in the box when not towing via the 5th wheel. Thanks to all for your help

To keep the bed clear on your 2019 Ram 3500 you want to go with the B&W Gooseneck Hitch # BWGNRK1320-5W and then use the sliding B&W Companion # BWRVK3400-5W. This is actually considered one of the best towing setups on the market and the sliding hitch will allow you to have enough clearance when you make some tight turns with your rig.

With that, we’re considering moving up from a 2006 Dodge Cummins 3500 SRW Laramie longbed to a 2018-2019 version of the same with the 5th wheel Tow Package for the XLR Nitro 321 we have on order. The ‘06 has a Reese Elite 18-will that mount in the ‘18 without extensive motifications? Thank you, Jason, for sharing your knowledge and expertise with us!

The Reese Elite 18K # RP30142 that you currently have is designed to fit the Elite Underbed kit or a Ford OEM puck system. As of right now there isn't an Elite Underbed kit from Reese for the 2018-2019 Ram 3500 but you can swap that out with their 20K Reese M5 # RP30918 which fits the OEM puck system on either of those model years with the 8' bed.

As long as you have the recommended 5 to 6" of clearance between the bed rails and trailer you shouldn't have any issues with the factory Ram tailgate when towing a 5th wheel.

How much height does the adapter add compared to above bed rails ?For Example a Curt A16 Item # C16120 mounted with Curt Custom Brackets Item # C16427-204Reese Adapter Item # RP30154 Factory PucksDemco Rail Adapter Item # DM6099 Factory PucksI assume the direct fit Curt A16 hitch Item # C16520-16021 the listed height range is accurate at 14-18?

The Demco 5th Wheel Rail Adapter # DM6099 will add 1-3/8" to height of hitch. So if you put the Curt A16 # C16120 on that adapter it will give you a total height adjustable from 14-3/8" to 18-3/8".
The Reese Adapter # RP30154 will add 2 inches so you'd be looking at 16" to 20" total height.
The direct puck hitch # C16520-16021 you mentioned is accurate at 14"- 18" directly.

I have a Ram 1500 classic with 6’4 bed, which sliding hitch will fit the best? I’m looking into Reese 30075 and 30051. I also looked into the Curts, A16 and E16.. it’s really confusing to know which one is more suitable for my car as far as easy installation and compatibility. Also which one is easier to maintain. Thank you
